Peter Pan by Original 1954 Broadway Cast (Cassette - 11/15/1988)
"Peter Pan" (11/15/1988) Original Cast Original Cast, RCA Victor Records (USA)In its initial Broadway run in 1954, PETER PAN was a bomb. Despite a score by Moose Charlap and Carolyn Leigh, and additional songs from Jule Styne, Betty Comden, and Adolph Green, as well as Tony Awards for Mary Martin (Peter) and Cyril Ritchard (Captain Hook), the show closed after a measly 154 performances. What really put this adaptation of J.M. Barrie's play on the map was the Disney film version, which flickered year-in, year-out across the television screens of America and made an indelible impression on every youngster who ever wanted to jump out his bedroom window and do battle with singing pirates. However, while the 1954 production may not have been a success at the box office, this original cast recording is a treasure that captures the enchanting score and the enthusiasm of the performances. While some may prefer more recent and energetic versions of the musical, Mary Martin's singing is by itself worth listening for; one number tailored for her vocal talents, "Oh, My Mysterious Lady," won't be found anywhere else. And adding to the mix, Cyril Ritchard plays Hook with comic menace.
