Don't follow the owners manual when trying to clean the cooking grates. They have a coating over cast iron grates. The owners manual says to use a brass brush to clean cold. The coating came off the cast iron by following the cleaning suggestions. I have cleaned them with the brass brush and also with soap and water as suggested. Just treat it like any other grill.
