The Pink Panther (Checkpoint; Sensormatic; Widescreen) [Blu-ray Disc]
The first in Blake Edwards's series of enormously successful Pink Panther films, it introduced Peter Sellers in the role of epic bumbler Inspector Jacques Clouseau. Ultrasuave jewel thief Sir Charles Lytton (David Niven), aka the Phantom, is in hot pursuit of the Pink Panther, one of the world's most precious jewels, now in the possession of Princess Dala (Claudia Cardinale). Clouseau, a detective who has raised bungling incompetence to an art form, is in hot pursuit of Sir Charles, who has successfully eluded him for the past 15 years. He also seeks the Phantom's female accomplice, little realizing that she's actually his own wife, Simone (Capucine), who naturally prefers to sleep with the dashing thief. To complicate matters, Lytton's nephew George (Robert Wagner) arrives on the scene, dismaying his uncle with his desire to follow in his footsteps. When, during a costume party at the princess's Roman villa, the safe containing the Pink Panther is opened, it contains only a white glove--the signature of the Phantom. Sellers, playing a character part with relatively little screen time, stole the film so completely that he went on to star in the series' subsequent installments. The marriage of his comic brilliance with Edwards's mastery of farce made THE PINK PANTHER a huge worldwide hit. The suavely amusing pink cartoon panther featured in the opening and closing credits went on to became the star of his own cartoon show.

Return of the Pink Panther
RETURN is the third installment in the popular Pink Panther series and a reunion for director Blake Edwards and comedian Peter Sellers, who had not made a Panther film since A SHOT IN THE DARK a decade earlier. This time the bumbling French detective Inspector Clouseau is reluctantly called back into service by Chief Inspector Dreyfus (Herbert Lom) when someone swipes the infamous Pink Panther diamond from the museum in Lugash. The prime suspect is the smoothly aristocratic jewel thief Sir Charles Lytton (Christopher Plummer), aka the Phantom. Clouseau creates his usual comic mayhem in an assortment of European watering holes as he attempts to track down the jet-setting criminal. While Lytton, who is, on this rare occasion, innocent of the crime in question, joins in the pursuit of the real criminals to avoid arrest, his lovely wife, Claudine (Catherine Schell), leads the myopic Clouseau on a wild-goose chase. As usual, Clouseau's creative methods of deduction drive Inspector Dreyfus ever closer to the brink of insanity. Sellers's comic genius is set off by a fine cast and spectacular European locations, including Gstaad and the French Riviera as well as Marakesh and Casablanca.
The Pink Panther Strikes Again (Remastered) [DVD]
In the fourth film of the long-running series, bumbling Inspector Jacques Clouseau's (Peter Sellers) long-suffering boss, Dreyfus (Herbert Lom), finally has been driven to a nervous breakdown by the detective and has been hospitalized in an asylum. Meanwhile, the hapless Clouseau has taken over his chores as chief of police. But Dreyfus escapes from his caretakers and, intent on finishing off Clouseau, captures renowned scientist Dr. Hugo Fassbinder (Richard Vernon), inventor of the death ray. Dreyfus threatens to use the ray to destroy the earth unless Clouseau is turned over to him at once. World leaders are called in to deal with the problem, including Dr. Henry Kissinger (Byron Kane) and Gerald Ford (Dick Crockett). It's finally decided to send a gorgeous Russian spy (Lesley-Anne Down) to lure him to his doom.
Son of the Pink Panther [DVD]
The eighth and last entry in Blake Edwards's long-running series, SON OF THE PINK PANTHER stars Roberto Benigni (LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL) as the illegitimate son of the benighted Inspector Clouseau. Princess Yasmin, a member of the royal family of Lugash, is kidnapped while on vacation in France by terrorist Hans (Robert Davi), who demands a $100 million ransom, and Chief of Police Dreyfus (Herbert Lom) is called in to handle the case. Hans makes the mistake of being involved in a crash with Jacques Gambrelli, the bumbling illegitimate son of Clouseau, who manages to catch sight of the princess. Gambrelli also crashes into Dreyfus, who manifests his familiar Tourette's symptoms after meeting the son of the man who so often pushed him to the brink of insanity. After confirming his identity, the police chief sends Gambrelli on what he hopes will be a suicidal mission to find the princess in Lugash. Begnini is charming as the heir to the legacy of ineptitude.
Curse of the Pink Panther [DVD]

Of course, we soon learn that the lovable bungler isn't dead at all; he's merely faking it so he can pursue, incognito, a ring of international drug smugglers through exotic Hong Kong.Employing a repertoire of ludicrous disguises, the bungling police inspector is back again, and this time Clouseau is looking for his own would-be murderer.
Trail of the Pink Panther (Remastered) [DVD]
One would have thought that the death of Peter Sellers in 1980 would spell the end of the Pink Panther series, but Blake Edwards was able to utilize leftover footage from previous Panther efforts to create TRAIL OF THE PINK PANTHER. Sellers once again stars as the ineptly heroic Inspector Clouseau, who is assigned to investigate when the fabulous Pink Panther diamond is again stolen from the country of Lugash. While flying to England for an important meeting with Scotland Yard, Clouseau's plane mysteriously disappears over the Atlantic, arousing speculation about the detective. Clouseau's past is dug up by French television reporter Marie Jouvet (Joanna Lumley), who interviews many of the people whose lives the bungling detective has touched--in more ways than one--over the years, including Chief Inspector Dreyfus (Herbert Lom), Sir Charles Lytton (David Niven), Clouseau's former wife, now Lady Lytton (Capucine), and, of course, the incomparable Kato (Burt Kwouk). In the course of her research, Jouvet manages to unearth Clouseau's father, who, not surprisingly, shares many of his son's most familiar characteristics.
