"Buttons & Bows: 25 Top Hits 1940-1949 (ASV Living Era)" (04/11/2000) Pop Vocal Shore, Dinah, ASVAll tracks have been digitally remastered. The April-fresh notes drifting about on this CD couldn't belong to anyone but Dinah Shore. Unlike other great American vocalists, she spawned few imitators, thus she is somewhat forgotten. Her velvety style is now a commodity, as we have not heard the likes of her before or since. These 25 recordings are quintessential samples of her sumptuous singing. The nine years represented here plot her early recording career and her sophistication is apparent on her first records with Xavier Cugat's Orchestra. She croons "The Breeze and I" with soft melancholy. Shore reaches perfection by 1942 when she recorded "Dearly Beloved." Relaxed and lilting, she is suited for songs of romance. The musical arrangements are generally light to limpid, letting Dinah's quiet warmth dominate. "I'll Walk Alone," cut during the musicians ban, finds her shining amidst a choir arranged to closely simulate an orchestra.
