Recorded at Shrimp Boat Sound, Key West, Florida. Includes liner notes by Jimmy Buffett. "Follow in my wake, you've not that much at stake..." So begins BAROMETER SOUP, perhaps the most engaging work yet from Jimmy Buffett, the man whose Key West-inspired music has fed a culture of Parrotheads for more than 20 years. Mixed into this soup are classic Buffett tales--songs with attitude, songs about dreamers, wistful memories, bad habits and "Barefoot Children In The Rain." Yet, there's also an added depth, arrived at through thoughtful tributes to some of his favorite authors. BAROMETER SOUP continues in the tradition of CHANGES IN LATITUDES, CHANGES IN ATTITUDES and SON OF A SON OF A SAILOR, offering a generous helping of pensive ballads and carefree, whistleable tunes. The poignancy of "Jimmy Dreams," a quietly introspective song about the importance of dreams, is contrasted by "Lage Nom-Ai," a calypso tune with the same dance-inspiring energy as "Volcano." What's different about this Buffett album are the influences and inspirations. The sad tale of the "Remittance Man," for instance, is inspired by a Mark Twain story, and deals with the tragic fate of a wanderer destined to be a "a prisoner of his fears." Buffett's strengths are the integrity with which his music reflects both his personality and message, and the ability to get listeners to sing along. He conveys what should be common sense but too often isn't ("Take it all in it's as big as it seems/Count all your blessings, remember your dreams"), and provides social commentary ("You could shoplift all day at Blockbuster/But you can't steal the Orange Bowl Queen") through tales which, though they are born in the provincial worlds of Key West and the Caribbean, are accessible and applicable to all.

Somewhere Over China by Jimmy Buffett (CD - 10/25/1990)
"Somewhere Over China" (10/25/1990) Pop Vocal Buffett, Jimmy, MCA Records (USA)Personnel: Jimmy Buffett (vocals, guitar); Josh Leo, Barry Chance (acoustic & electric guitar); Doyle Grisham, Hank DeVito (steel guitar); Greg "Fingers" Taylor (harmonica); Michael Utley (piano, organ, synthesizer); Farrell Morris (vibes, percussion); Harry Dailey (bass); Norbert Putnam (synthesizer, bass); Matt "Matty Dread" Betton (drums, timbales); M.L. Benoit (congas); Deborah "Heather" McColl, Florence "Bambi" Warner, Christian Bachellier, David Loggins, Freddy Fishstick (background vocals). Recorded at The Bennett House, Franklin, Tennessee from September to October 1981. If most of Buffett's best albums have been musical evocations of tropical party times, SOMEWHERE OVER CHINA would seem to be the inevitable hangover; the songs, with few exceptions, reek of crankiness, nostalgia, and self-doubt, as can be readily seen from titles like "Where's the Party," "It's Midnight and I'm Not Famous Yet" (Buffett's--no kidding--attempt at new wave), or "I Heard I Was in Town." The epic title tune, which recycles musical cliches of the "Chinatown, My Chinatown" variety, may be an exception, although its lyric is opaque to the point of impenetrability, so who knows? "When Salome Plays the Drum," is an up-tempo Latin-tinged number in more typical Buffett style, and "Steamer" is a sentimental but obviously heartfelt love song. The album ends with a camped-up lounge lizard version of Frank Loesser's standard "On a Slow Boat to China," in which Buffett and his bandmates seem to having a thoroughly inebriated good time.
A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean by Jimmy Buffett (CD - 10/17/1990)
"A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean" (10/17/1990) Pop Vocal Buffett, Jimmy, MCA Records (USA)Personnel: Jimmy Buffett (vocals, acoustic guitar); Steve Goodman (acoustic guitar); Reggie Young (electric guitar); Doyle Gresham (steel guitar); Vassar Clements (fiddle); Greg "Fingers" Taylor (harmonica); Mike Utley (piano); Shane Keester (Moog synthesizer); Ed "Lump" Williams (bass); Sammy Creason (drums); Ferrell Morris, Marvin Gardens (percussion); Don Gant, Buzz Cason, Carol Montgomery, Diane Harris (background vocals). Recorded at Glaser Sound, Nashville, Tennessee. Also available with LIVING AND DYING IN 3/4 TIME on 1 cassette. Personnel: Jimmy Buffett (vocals, acoustic guitar); Steve Goodman (acoustic guitar); Reggie Young (electric guitar); Doyle Gresham (pedal steel guitar); Vassar Clements (fiddle); Greg "Fingers" Taylor (harmonica); Mike Utley (piano); Shane Keester (Moog synthesizer); Ed "Lump" Williams (bass); Sammy Creason (drums); Marvin Gardens (maracas); Ferrell Morris (percussion); Don Gant, Buzz Cason, Carol Montgomery, Diane Harris (background vocals). Recorded at Glaser Sound, Nashville, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by Tom McGuane. Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24 karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box. Jimmy Buffett's major label debut (the title takes off from a sappy piece of late '50s teen pop by country singer Marty Robbins) is a bit more folky and laid back than you might expect. There are hints of the rowdier Buffett persona to come, but by and large this is early '70s mellow singer-songwriter stuff, albeit with cleverer than usual lyrics. Highlights include "Death of an Unpopular Poet," a delicately arranged story song about a poet whose posthumous success leads, literally, to the dogs; "They Don't Dance Like Carmen No More," a nostalgic remembrance of '40s big-fruit wearer Carmen Miranda; and "My Lovely Lady," an enthusiastic paean to a woman who "can eat her own weight in crabmeat." There's also the immortal "Why Don't We Get Drunk," a song whose next line--"and screw"--raised eyebrows in 1973, although post-Eminem it's less likely to do so.

This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Over the years, Jimmy Buffett has earned a fanatical legion of admirers on a par with the Grateful Dead's army of Deadheads. Like the Deadheads, Buffett's "Parrotheads" see something in Buffett that goes beyond music--a way of life exemplified by the image their hero continues to perpetuate. On BEACH HOUSE ON THE MOON, Buffett is still the good-time Charlie with a tan, a tropical drink, and a loud shirt. A closer listen reveals a deeper side to the man's songwriting. For instance, while the title song features a lilting, semi-tropical rhythms and steel drum coloring, the minor key melody supports some literate, sophisticated lyrical imagery. That's not to say Buffett's lost his famed sense of humor--check out his version of John D. Loudermilk's sarcastically good-natured "You Call It Jogging" (which contains the punch line: "I call it runnin' around"). It's the marriage of relaxed party atmosphere and thoughtful sentiments that make BEACH HOUSE such a well-balanced album.

Recording information: Shrimp Boat Sound Studio, Key West, Florida; Seventeen Grand Recording, Nashville, Tennessee; Sound Emporium, Nashville, Tennessee. As most devoted Parrotheads are well aware, Jimmy Buffett is no stranger to country music. Before he developed his trademark brand of Caribbean-influenced good-time pop, the sun-loving singer paid his dues on the Nashville circuit, eventually recording two albums of accomplished, if not particularly commercially successful, country rock (the best tracks from which were collected on 1994's BACK TO THE BEACH). With LICENSE TO CHILL, Buffett brings the cowboys to the beach, employing the talents of Music City's first-call studio musicians and superstar performers. Buffett's music is so comfortable that duet contributions from artists as diverse as Toby Keith, Nanci Griffith, and Bill Withers all sound perfectly at home. By applying island rhythms to country classics and combining steel of the pedal and drum varieties in a single song, Buffett has once again developed a new hybrid style that could perhaps be called "all-American world music."

This country-oriented set blends Jimmy Buffett's powers of sharp-eyed observation, in songs such as "Rockefeller Square" and "Bend a Little," with affecting vignettes such as "Livingston's Gone to Texas" and the down-home "God Don't Own a Car," while the medley of the title track and "Comin' Down Slow" is one of the artist's most intricately arranged productions.
Down to Earth by Jimmy Buffett (CD - 06/30/1998)

Jimmy Buffett's 1970 debut album finds the onetime smuggler at home with thinly veiled drug references such as "Ellis Dee (He Ain't Free)," social comment such as "The Christian?" and "The Missionary," and hardscrabble ballads like "There's Nothing Soft About Hard Times," as well as including one of his best early songs, "The Captain and the Kid."

Recorded at Shrimp Boat Sound Studio, Key West, Florida; Seventeen Grand Recording, Nashville, Tennessee; Jupiter Recording, Jupiter, Florida. Includes a 32-page booklet with liner notes by Tom Corcoran. Jimmy Buffett had one gigantic pop hit back in 1977 with his ode to brain-drain, "Margaritaville." Buffett's laid-back combination of country, folk, and calypso also garnered him an huge cult following; his fans, dubbed Parrotheads, have helped him remain one of the top touring acts and a platinum-album creator for 25 years following his Top 10 hit. While many massively successful artists whose catalogue is overshadowed by one hit have been known to curse their fate, no one has embraced their hit with quite the zeal of the mellow Buffett, and indeed his latest double-CD collection is entitled MEET ME IN MARGARITAVILLE. Of course, the titular song is featured, as are Buffett's other minor hits (including underrated classics like "Come Monday"), many beloved fan favorites, and most importantly 10 brand new recordings. Eight of these revisit familiar Buffett songs, best of which is a rousing live version of "A Pirate Looks At 40." The remaining two are covers of the Fred Neil-penned "Everybody's Talking" and the Beach Boys' "Sail On Sailor," each perfectly suited to Buffett's voice and trademark island-flavored sound. MEET ME IN MARGARITAVILLE contains something for both Buffett's longtime fans and casual listeners who want a good collection of all the man's music in one place.
Boats, Beaches, Bars & Ballads [Box] by Jimmy Buffett (CD - 05/19/1992)
"Boats, Beaches, Bars & Ballads [Box]" (05/19/1992) Pop Vocal Buffett, Jimmy, Margaritaville RecordsDigitally remastered at Future Disc Systems, W. Hollywood, California. Compiles material from Buffett's albums (1970-1990) and some unreleased songs. Includes extensive liner notes, a track-by-track description by Jimmy Buffett, and color photos. With sell-out concerts year after year and an empire incorporating everything from best-selling books to a restaurant chain, singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett transformed himself an icon of laid-back, island-dwelling eccentricity. Buffett revels in the world of life's merry dropouts, of beach bums, sailors, barflies, nomads, and minstrels. His box set, BOATS, BEACHES, BARS & BALLADS, cleverly divides his gargantuan catalogue into major themes, offering up four distinct discs that celebrate the subtly varied aspects of his aesthetic. The BOATS section is dominated by more wistful songs, with occasional gusts of wind like "Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes" and an excellent cover of "On a Slow Boat to China." BEACHES starts fittingly wasted away in his Top 10 moment, "Margaritaville," and is followed by a mix of joy and pain that ends in Buffett's unforgettable novelty hit, "Cheeseburger in Paradise." Naturally, BARS is the most raucous set, peppered with rockers ("Fins"), sing-alongs ("Why Don't We Get Drunk"), and wistful nostalgia ("Pencil Thin Mustache"). Topping off this excellent compilation, BALLADS sums up the oft-forgotten depth of Buffett's storytelling, opening with the extraordinary beauty of "Come Monday" and flipping through a scrapbook of quiet elegance.
Live In Fenway Park [CD & DVD] [11/8] *
"Live at Fenway Park" (11/08/2005) Pop Vocal Buffett, Jimmy, Mailboat RecordsRecording information: 09/10/2004 - 09/12/2004. All Parrotheads know that a Jimmy Buffett concert is a grand party of the first order. In fact, like the concerts of the Grateful Dead, Buffett shows have achieved something of a mythic status--an island vacation and rock festival rolled into one. As a result, Buffett's live albums and bootlegs have become an industry unto themselves, and LIVE IN FENWAY PARK perfectly captures the lazy, hazy, good-times vibe that Buffett has made his own. LIVE IN FENWAY PARK contains two discs of in-concert tracks, which include "Margaritaville," of course, "Boat Drinks," and "Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes," as well as a rousing rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame." Also included here is an hour-long, bonus DVD with footage from Buffett's Fenway appearance. These audio and visual souvenirs should satisfy both Parrotheads looking to relive their concert experiences and Buffett neophytes hoping to learn what the fuss is all about.
Coconut Telegraph by Jimmy Buffett (CD - 10/17/1990)
"Coconut Telegraph" (10/17/1990) Pop Vocal Buffett, Jimmy, MCA Records (USA)A mellower than usual album for Buffett, but entertaining as always. Highlights include the title song, a very funny calypso-tinged look at how gossip gets around, with Buffett sounding oddly like Levon Helm. "Incommunicado" is a mournful meditation on mortality that references mystery writer John MacDonald and eulogizes John Wayne, while "The Weather is Here, Wish You Were Beautiful" is one of Buffett's best endless party anthems. There's also a totally straight reading of the old standard "The Stars Fell on Alabama," and "Little Miss Magic," an uncharacteristically sentimental folkie ode (with just guitar and harmonica) to his newborn daughter.
Live in Hawaii by Jimmy Buffett (CD - 03/22/2005)
"Live in Hawaii" (03/22/2005) Pop Vocal Buffett, Jimmy, Mailboat RecordsPersonnel include: Jimmy Buffett (vocals, guitar); Don Ho, Henry Kapono, Martin Denny. Recording information: Waikiki Shell, Honolulu, Hawaii (01/28/2004); Maui Arts & Cultural Center, Kahului, Hawaii (01/30/2004). This live set was recorded in Hawaii, the only place that is possibly better suited to Jimmy Buffett's music than the stretch of Gulf Coast the singer famously calls home. And from the lei that adorns Buffett's neck on the cover of LIVE IN HAWAII, to the good-time music within, the overall vibe couldn't go more perfectly with palm trees, sand, and fruity alcoholic beverages. Although the set list covers much of the same ground as many of Buffett's concert albums, the favorites are here, along with interesting covers, including Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talkin'." Duets with Martin Denny (there's a version of his "Quiet Village"), Henry Kapono (whose "Why Don't We Get Drunk" is performed on ukeleles), and Mr. "Tiny Bubbles" himself, Don Ho, add to the light, playful energy. This two-disc set, which also includes a 15-minute DVD, should put Parrotheads (as Buffett fanatics are generally known) in heaven.
Havana Daydreamin' by Jimmy Buffett (CD - 10/17/1990)
"Havana Daydreamin'" (10/17/1990) Pop Vocal Buffett, Jimmy, MCA Records (USA)Also available with CHANGES IN LATITUDES, CHANGES IN ATTITUDES on 1 cassette. Some Parrotheads consider this Jimmy Buffett's best album overall, which may or may not be the case, but there's no question that his songwriting here is at something of a peak. The most impressive and ambitious track is "Woman Goin' Crazy on Caroline Street," a character study of a Blanche Dubois-ish strumpet co-written with cult folkie Steve Goodman. The funniest is "My Head Hurts, My Feet Stink, and I Don't Love Jesus," a great honky-tonker about an epic hangover on the morning after (with somebody doing a pretty good imitation of the Oak Ridge Boys on the chorus). Meanwhile, the delicate, folk-y "Something So Feminine About a Mandolin" is one of Buffett's all-time prettiest tunes mated to one of his most perceptive lyrics. "Kick It in Second Wind" is a wry rocker with a story line that will be familiar to any bar band vet who's ever played to an empty house at two o' clock in the morning.
Down To Earth/High Cumberland Jubilee [4/12]
"Down to Earth/High Cumberland Jubilee" (03/14/2006) Pop Vocal Buffett, Jimmy, Collectables Records2 LPs on 1 CD: DOWN TO EARTH (1970)/HIGH CUMBERLAND JUBILEE (1976). This budget-priced twofer combines Jimmy Buffett's 1970 recording debut with his 1976 song cycle HIGH CUMBERLAND JUBILEE. The former album finds the onetime smuggler at home with thinly veiled drug references such as "Ellis Dee (He Ain't Free)," social comment such as "The Christian?" and "The Missionary," and hardscrabble ballads like "There's Nothing Soft About Hard Times," as well as including one of his best early songs, "The Captain and the Kid." The mid-'70s release is a country-oriented set blending the sharp-eyed observation of songs such as "Rockefeller Square" and "Bend a Little" with affecting vignettes such as "Livingston's Gone to Texas" and the down-home "God Don't Own a Car," while the medley of the title track and "Comin' Down Slow" is one of Buffett's most intricately arranged productions.

"Have you ever dreamed of escaping from your dull existence to a new life on a tropical island?" Jimmy Buffett asks, introducing this cycle of twenty songs from the musical he adapted with Herman Wouk from Wouk's novel of the same name. DON'T STOP THE CARNIVAL tells the story of a palm tree-studded fantasy island and the Everyman hero, Norman Paperman, who escapes there. The customary Buffettesque Caribbean sound is in full effect, nuanced by the play's story line as well as a variety of characters and singing/speaking voices, including Wouk himself. CARNIVAL should please Parrotheads, with sparkly tropical songs like "Calaloo" and "Champagne Si, Agua No," which percolate with Buffett's familiar lighthearted island spirit.
