"Swing Out to Victory: Songs of WWII [Box]" (06/08/1999) Easy Listening Various Artists, IntersoundThis is part of Intersound's Legends series. Includes liner notes by David Lennick. This is part of Intersound's Legends series. During World War II, the music business, like other areas of the entertainment industry, supported the war effort, in its case by turning out a lengthy series of popular songs intended to reassure jittery civilians, promote preparedness, inspire patriotism, and, more specifically, encourage the buying of war bonds, the conservation of materials, and adherence to rationing restrictions. This budget-priced four-CD set from Canada presents 40 examples of such songs, and it is a welcome effort, even if it is hardly the definitive statement on the subject. In fact, it is practically an alternative set, full of lesser known material. There are several original recordings of the biggest hit versions of war-related songs, and there are a few recordings that, if not the biggest hit versions, did reach the charts. Other songs were hits, if not in these versions, and a couple were sung in movies. But the knowledgeable (maybe even the casual) reader will note some important omissions, constituting some of the most popular and best-remembered songs of the war era. When you consider that the set's running time is under two hours (meaning it could have fit onto two discs instead of being spread across four), it's hard to understand -- you'd almost think this was the second, lesser volume of a series in which all the really well-known songs appeared on the first volume. As such, Swing Out to Victory! is an interesting collection of war-themed tunes with some hits and enjoyable obscurities, but not what you quite what you might expect. (The tracks were mastered from records, and while a noise reduction process was used, the sound quality varies.) ~ William Ruhlmann

"WWII Radio Broadcast July 6, 1944 and November 30, 1944" (07/25/1994) Pop Vocal Crosby, Bing, Laserlight (USA)WORLD WAR II RADIO BROADCASTS contains uninterrupted Kraft Hall Radio programs, complete with songs, comedy sketches, commercials and World War II news bulletins. Also available as part of 5-CD box set WWII RADIO: LIVE RADIO BROADCASTS FROM 1943-1945 on Laserlight (15934). Personnel: Bing Crosby, Spike Jones, The Charioteers, Eugenie Baird, Marilyn Maxwell (vocals); Jimmy Dorsey (saxophone); Tommy Dorsey (trombone); John Scott Trotter and his Orchestra. Includes liner notes by Laurence J. Zwisohn. Digitally remastered by Robert Vosgien (CMS Digital, Pasadena, California). Personnel: Bing Crosby (vocals). Liner Note Author: Larry Zwisohn. Recording information: Kraft Music Hall Radio (07/06/1944-11/30/1944); Laserlight (07/06/1944-11/30/1944). Unknown Contributor Roles: Eugenie Baird; Jimmy Dorsey; Marilyn Maxwell; Spike Jones; The Charioteers; Tommy Dorsey. One of radio's longest and best-loved programs was the Kraft Music Hall (sponsored by Kraft Foods). This program ran from June 1933 through May 1949. WWII RADIO BROADCASTS documents two radio performances that Crosby fronted--the first broadcast dates back to July 6th, 1944 and the second to November of that same year. Both programs are heard here in their entirety; even the advertisements for Kraft Foods have been left in. There is also a lot of canned comedy/banter, as well as war bulletins, played between tunes, making this CD very authentic. Indeed, the record company (Laserlight) hasn't tampered with the broadcast one bit. Crosby gets his July 6th show off to a swingin' start with "Sno Qualimie Jo Jo," and kicks his November show off with the bluesy "Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby." Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey are also featured on this release. The brothers' all-instrumental version of "Sandman," and their decidedly goofy version of "Exactly Like You" are especially heart warming.

"Mel and George "Do" World War II" (07/26/2004) Pop Vocal Torme, Mel, Concord JazzPersonnel: Mel Torme (vocals), George Shearing (piano), Neil Swainson (bass), Donny Osborne (drums). All of the Mel Torm?-George Shearing collaborations are well worth acquiring, for the singer and the pianist constantly inspire each other. For this live concert, Torm? and Shearing perform a variety of songs popular during World War II. Shearing and bassist Neil Swainson duet on "Lilt Marlene" and "I've Heard That Song Before"; Shearing takes "I Know Why and So Do You" unaccompanied, and the duo is joined by drummer Donny Osborne and Torm? for a wide-ranging and consistently enjoyable set. Although "This Is the Army Mister Jones" is a bit dated, a four-song Duke Ellington medley, "I Could Write a Book" and a touching "We Mustn't Say Goodbye" are memorable. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
