"Dino! Italian Love Songs [Bonus Tracks]" (03/14/2006) Pop Vocal Martin, Dean, Collectors' Choice MusicPersonnel: Dean Martin (vocals). Liner Note Author: James Ritz. Dean Martin typified both the romance and seeming effortlessness of the early-1960s swinger. This collection of lushly orchestrated songs features Italian pop classics like "There's No Tomorrow," "Arrivederci Roma," "Return to Me," and the Latin-flavored "Belle From Barcelona," all performed with Martin's familiar relaxed intimacy and devil-may-care swagger. The only surprising thing about an album of Italian songs by Dean Martin, the most overtly Italian of the Italian-American pop singers, was that it wasn't recorded until near the end of Martin's recording contract with Capitol Records. Maybe it was the success of similar albums by Connie Francis that convinced the label or the artist that such a collection could have commercial appeal, but given that some of Martin's biggest hits, including "That's Amore" and "Volare," had been Italian-flavored, it's hard to see why they would have needed convincing. In any case, Martin was typically convincing on this album in both English and Italian, whether recutting his hit "Return to Me" or trying an alternate English lyric for "O Sole Mio" ("There's No Tomorrow"). Listeners should be forewarned that this is not a collection of Martin's Italian hits, but rather a newly recorded album (circa 1961). Nevertheless, it is a good match of singer to songs, and it became Martin's first charting album on Capitol. [The 2005 edition includes four bonus tracks.] ~ William Ruhlmann

"Italian Love Songs" (08/28/2001) Pop Vocal Martin, Dean, Capitol/EMI RecordsPersonnel: Dean Martin (vocals); Gus Levine, Dick Stabile (conductor). Producers: Dave Cavanaugh, Lee Gillette. Includes liner notes by James Ritz. Digitally remastered by Bob Norberg (Capitol Mastering). Personnel: Dean Martin (vocals). Liner Note Author: James Ritz. Arranger: Gus Levine. Capitol's 2001 Italian Love Songs collection is exactly what it says it is -- a collection of 16 Italian love songs, some sung in Italian, some sung in English translations, all pulled from Dino's classic recordings from the '50s. There's one rare item here -- "From the Bottom of My Heart (Dammi, Dammi, Dammi)," appearing here courtesy of the Dean Martin Family Trust -- but it's probably not worth seeking out for anyone outside of completists. That's not to say that the recording is bad, because it isn't -- it's a first-rate collection of romantic ballads, sung by one of the masters of the Italian love song. But if you already have most of this material and aren't in need of mood music for a romantic evening (and if you don't desperately need that rare cut), this is probably not a necessary purchase. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"Standing Ovation!/Italian Album/The Essence of Jerry Vale [Box]" (04/10/2001) Pop Vocal Vale, Jerry, Legacy RecordingsOriginally released as three separate albums, STANDING OVATION! THE GREAT CARNEGIE HALL CONCERT, THE JERRY VALE ITALIAN ALBUM and THE ESSENCE OF JERRY VALE. Sony repackaged and re-released three fine Jerry Vale albums and collections -- Standing Ovation, The Italian Album and Essence of Jerry Vale -- as a slip-cased box set. It's not a bad way to acquire the albums if you don't already own them, but there are no bonus tracks or new packaging or remastering, which means it's of marginal interest to hardcore collectors. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"Sings Italian Favorites/More Italian Favorites [Remaster]" (02/27/2006) Oldies Francis, Connie, Beat Goes On2 LPs on 1 CD: SINGS ITALIAN FAVORITES (1959) / MORE ITALIAN FAVORITES (1959). It's doubtful that anyone born after the '60s remembers Connie Francis well, despite the fact that she was a mega pop star during the late '50s and throughout the '60s. Albums like Sings Italian Favorites and More Italian Favorites sold faster than hotcakes at the local fire department fundraiser, making Concetta Rosemarie Franconero the forerunner to female performers like Madonna (though Francis' wardrobes tended to be more conservative). The 2004 release of these two albums will most strongly appeal to those who remember Francis from her heyday, and have been waiting for her many, many albums to be reissued. The songs, sung in English and Italian, and backed by a full orchestra, don't hold up in the way an Ella Fitzgerald recording does, but Francis is a good singer with a soft, romantic lilt to her voice. And while one wouldn't call the production masterful, the MGM crew keeps a fairly even hand on things for Sings Italian Favorites. The second album, More Italian Favorites, is a bit more bombastic, and more echo -- which isn't needed -- is added to Francis' voice. For old fans, or anyone curious about the types of songs that made mom and dad fall in love, Sings Italian Favorites/More Italian Favorites will be a blast from pop history's past. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

"Jerry Vale Sings the Great Italian Hits" (09/01/1998) Pop Vocal Vale, Jerry, Legacy RecordingsIncludes liner notes by Jerry Vale. All tracks have been digitally remastered using 20-bit technology. Audio Mixer: Tom "Curly" Ruff. Liner Note Authors: Dom Cerulli; Jerry Vale. Photographers: Don Hunstein; Baron Wolman. Arranger: Glenn Osser. Released as a companion piece to Columbia/Legacy's Greatest Hits collection, Jerry Vale Sings the Great Italian Hits features 18 Italian songs Vale recorded for Columbia Records during the '50s, '60s, and '70s. Like any Italian-American crooner, he learned these songs from his family and continually returned to them over the years. He didn't record a full album of Italian songs until 1962, when he cut two that year. Ten tracks from those two albums are featured here -- the remaining cuts date from 1955, 1966, 1967, and 1970. The remarkable thing about Sings the Great Italian Hits is that it all sounds as if it comes from the same recording session. That's how consistent Vale's performances are -- even though this disc contains sessions helmed by four different producers, it all holds together. Also, these 18 songs -- including "Innamorata (Sweetheart)," "Volare," "Ciao, Ciao, Bambina," "O Sole Mio," "Arrivederci, Roma," "Summertime in Venice," "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me," and "More" -- are among his best vocal performances, illustrating what a fine vocalist he could be. For some tastes, the collection may be a little ballad-heavy, but this remains one of the very best Vale compilations released in the CD era. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
