"Ellis Island" (03/06/2001) Pop Vocal Irish Tenors (The), Matrix Music MarketingThe Irish Tenors: Anthony Kearns, Ronan Tynan, Finbar Wright. Recorded at Windmill Lane Recording Studios, Dublin, Ireland. This collection of Irish favorites old and new will be sure to find a place in the hearts both of expatriates and those whose Irish lineage may be a little more open to question. The Tenors, here accompanied by a considerable orchestra and choir, consolidate their reputation for classy renditions of timeless classics with selections such as "Forty Shades of Green," "Macushla," and, of course, "Danny Boy." They also pay tribute to the place that so many expatriate Irish men and women call home with "God Bless America," which is a fitting finale to this unabashedly sentimental album. Though unarguably not as authentic in its settings of Irish music as, say, the Chieftains' albums, ELLIS ISLAND undoubtedly captures the spirit of Irish exiles all across their adopted homeland. After the events of Sept. 11th, and the six-month anniversary of that tragedy, an album based on Ellis Island seemed all the more poignant (especially since more than a few of the firefighters who lost their lives in the tragedy were of Irish descent). Consequently, in the days following the tribute marking the aforementioned anniversary, ELLIS ISLAND quite rightly found itself in the Top 200 album charts. Think of it as a celebration of freedom.

"Three Irish Tenors" (10/26/1999) International Irish Tenors, Master Tone RecordsThe Irish Tenors: John McDermott/Anthony Kearns/Ronan Tynan. Personnel includes: John McDermott, Anthony Kearns, Ronan Tynan (vocals); Frank McNamara (arranger, conductor). Recorded live at the Royal Dublin Society Main Hall, Dublin, Ireland. Following closely and confidently in the footsteps of the stupendously popular THREE TENORS release--on which Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, and Jose Carreras turned their classically trained talents to popular song--THE IRISH TENORS employs the same formula with surprisingly fresh results. John McDermott, Anthony Kearns, and Ronan Tynan are three of Ireland's most accomplished interpreters of national vocal music. They give passionate readings of such age-old folk songs as "Minstrel Boy," "Will Ye Go, Lassie, Go?," and "The Town I Loved So Well." Also included are songs nearly everyone will recognize, including "Toora-Loora-Loora," "Danny Boy," and "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling." But those completely unfamiliar with the rich musical traditions of the Emerald Isle are in for a wonderful discovery in these superb renditions. The disc is recorded live in Dublin with a powerhouse 60-piece orchestra. McDermott, Kearns, and Tynan each sing several songs solo and also perform as a trio, lending their alternately tender and powerful vocal treatments to these timeless Irish classics.

"Three Mo' Tenors" (09/25/2001) Pop Vocal Original Cast, RCA Victor Records (USA)Principal cast: Thomas Young, Rodrick Dixon, Victor Trent Cook. A play upon the popularity of the original Three Tenors tour, this live recording attempts to document a tribute to both the classically trained voice and the African American experience. Because of its title, the CD almost had to begin with a classic opera piece like "La Donna E Mobile," but the arias are not where these musicians shine. Rather, it is the pop and jazz standards that show up later in the album that really show off the talent of these vocalists (though their performance of "Nessun Dorma" is pretty successful). The disc ranges stylistically from pop vocal to blues to gospel, along with its obligatory classical songs, but one of the most intriguing songs is their Christmas medley, "Have You Heard About the Baby/Glory to the Newborn King." The album closes with a great gospel medley that shows off the power of those classically trained voices better than any aria could, while making a nice tribute to a musical style that throughout history has been an integral part of African American culture. ~ Stacia Proefrock
