"Memory Lane: Acappella Avenue" (03/14/2006) Pop Vocal Memory Lane, Collectables RecordsPersonnel: Bill Kelsey (vocals). Audio Mixers: Dennis Pettet; Gordon Rice. Liner Note Author: Dennis Pettet. Recording information: Sigma Sound Studios, Philadelphia, PA. Fans of the Nylons will probably enjoy Accappella Avenue by Memory Lane. It features the same type of generic modern a cappella singing applied to many tried and true rock & roll standards from the '50s and '60s like "California Dreamin'," "Save the Last Dance for Me," "Da Doo Ron Ron," and "So Fine." If you're looking for pleasant background music for your next get-together, look no further. if you're looking for a less rigid a cappella experience, spend your cash on any disc by the always soulful and amazing Persuasions. ~ Al Campbell

"Disney's Greatest, Vol. 2" (02/27/2001) Pop Vocal Various Artists, Walt DisneyIncludes liner notes by Leonard Maltin. This is part of Walt Disney Records "DISNEY'S GREATEST" series. Adapter: Stephen Schwartz. Personnel: David Ogden Stiers, Dick Van Dyke, Disney Studio Chorus, Donny Osmond, Dick Jones , Ernie Sabella, Fess Parker, Glenn Close, Jason Weaver, Jerry Orbach, Adriana Caselotti, Joseph Williams, Judy Kuhn, Julie Andrews, Karen Dotrice, Matthew Garber, Nathan Lane, Peggy Lee , Angela Lansbury, Phil Collins, Phil Harris , Robert Kraft, Roger Bart, Samuel E. Wright, The Disneyland Chorus, Tony Jay, Paul Kandel, Ilene Woods, Mouse Chorus, Bruce Reitherman (vocals). Liner Note Author: Leonard Maltin. Arrangers: Jay Rifkin; Mark Mancina. Whether you're a baby boomer who grew up watching such classic Disney films as MARY POPPINS and THE JUNGLE BOOK, or a parent whose kids have developed an unnatural attachment to the likes of MULAN or THE LITTLE MERMAID, you'll find something to enjoy in DISNEY'S GREATEST VOL 2. This compilation of well-known songs from Disney films stretches all the way from 1937 (SNOW WHITE's "Someday My Prince Will Come") right up to the present. On one hand, this disc offers an interesting thumbnail sketch of how movie soundtracks (and pop music) have changed throughout the 20th century. On the other hand, it's simply a solid collection of familiar tunes, from the haunting, Dick Van Dyke-sung "Chim Chim Cher-ee" to the Phil Collins pop ballad "You'll Be in My Heart" (from 1999's TARZAN).

"Magic Moments: The Best of '50s Pop [Box]" (08/10/2004) Pop Vocal Various Artists, Shout! FactoryShout Factory's Magic Moments: The Best of '50s Pop isn't a flashy box set -- apart from an introduction from Billy Vera, there's little in the way of liner notes, nor does it boast any rare or unexpected material. But that's it's charm. Over the course of three discs and 60 tracks, Magic Moments serves up many of the biggest vocal pop hits of the '50s -- songs like Doris Day's "Whatever Will Be, Will Be," Perry Como's "Catch a Falling Star," Johnnie Ray's "Cry," Johnny Mathis' "Wonderful! Wonderful!," Pat Boone's "Love Letters in the Sand," Guy Mitchell's "Singing the Blues," Julie London's "Cry Me a River," P?rez Prado's "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White," Dean Martin's "Memories Are Made of This," Nat King Cole's "Unforgettable," and Bobby Darin's "Mack the Knife." This doesn't have all the big hits of the '50s or all the big stars -- Frank Sinatra is noticeably missing -- but it does have an excellent, representative cross-section of the decade's biggest mainstream pop hits, making this is a terrific nostalgia trip (even if it would have been nice to have better liner notes to place this music in a greater perspective). ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"15 Christmas Favorites [Capital]" (11/01/1995) Pop Vocal Various Artists, EMI-Capitol Special MarketsPerformers include: Lena Horne, Nat "King" Cole, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Lou Rawls, Peggy Lee, Glen Campbell. Personnel: Peggy Lee (vocals). 15 Christmas Favorites is an entertaining collection of traditional pop, adult contemporary and easy listening interpretations of classic and contemporary Christmas carols. Although there are a couple of instrumental tracks by Guy Lombardo and Ferrante & Teicher on the collection, almost all of the disc is devoted to vocal performances. There are a few undistinguished moments on the collection, but they are nevertheless pleasant, and they're also outweighed by such fine cuts as Nat King Cole's "The Christmas Song," Bing Crosby's "Let It Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!," Lena Horne's "Winter Wonderland," Dean Martin's "White Christmas," Glen Campbell's "I'll Be Home for Christmas," Lou Rawls' "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and Nancy Wilson's "That's What I Want for Christmas." The end result is a winningly laid-back holiday album that is a pleasant listening experience. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"The String Quartet Tribute to Norah Jones" (09/02/2003) Pop Vocal Vitamin String Quartet, Vitamin Records (USA)Tributee: Norah Jones. Recording information: Private Island TRAX. Arrangers: Vincent Gillioz; Sasha Ivanov. The String Quartet Tribute to Norah Jones reinterprets the majority of the vocal sensation's debut album, Come Away With Me. Highlights include "Seven Years" and "Lonestar." ~ Johnny Loftus

"Broadway Today" (06/03/2003) Pop Vocal Various Artists, Sony Music Distribution (USA)Sony Classical's 2003 compilation Broadway Today is in effect the show music equivalent of one of the Now collections of current pop music in that half of it is licensed from other record labels for a thorough survey of the music to be heard on the Great White Way at the time of its release. Every one of the tracks was from a show running on Broadway when the album was released, including material from the previous three winners of the Tony Award for best musical, The Producers (2001), Thoroughly Modern Millie (2002), and Hairspray (2003). The tracks are culled from original Broadway cast albums, with the exception of the "bonus track," "Overture/All That Jazz," from the original soundtrack to Chicago, the 1996 revival of which has become a Broadway long-runner. As such, the collection gives a good sense of what Broadway music was like in 2003, and, as the unsigned liner notes put it, "the energy of contemporary pop music has changed everything." Or rather, not contemporary pop music -- there's no hip-hop or teen pop here -- but pop music of recent vintage. This is the Broadway of ABBA, Billy Joel, and Elton John, at least in part, so "'70s pop music" would be more like it. But it is also a nostalgic Broadway in which shows look back to an earlier time in their musical styles. Hairspray is rooted in the early '60s, and leadoff track "Good Morning Baltimore" sounds like a Phil Spector production. "Overture/All That Jazz" is a pastiche of '20s pop music. The two selections from The Producers are pastiches of show music from the '50s or earlier. And "O Soave Fanciulla" from La bohŠme is, simply, an opera aria. So, there is much greater variety than you might get by sampling the Broadway scores of years gone by. But there is no denying that the pace-setting work is from the likes of Joel and John. ~ William Ruhlmann

"Celebrate Broadway, Vol. 1: Sing Happy" (03/15/1994) Pop Vocal Various Artists, RCA Victor Records (USA)Producers include: Andy Wiswell, Jay David Saks, Gary Geld, Peter Udell, Philip Rose. Includes liner notes by Bill Rosenfield. CELEBRATE BROADWAY is a collection of songs from original cast recordings available on the RCA label. The first in a series of compilations of songs from Broadway shows recorded by RCA Victor, this album puts together an hour's worth of what used to be called "eleven o'clock numbers." These were the show-stoppers that woke you up shortly before the end of the show and got you ready to hit the street with a smile on your face. (Although, to tell the truth, some of these are first act finales meant to send you into the lobby anticipating the rest of the evening.) "Blow, Gabriel, Blow," from Anything Goes, "I've Gotta Crow," from Peter Pan, "Oklahoma!" from Oklahoma; these are the big, bright Broadway songs audiences have hummed to themselves for generations. The RCA catalog is mixed--not all of these performances are taken from the original casts, and the notes don't make that clear--but this is a good sampler for the casual fan who likes Broadway's stirring songs. ~ William Ruhlmann

"Mommy and Me: More Playgroup Favorites" (01/20/2004) Pop Vocal Various Artists, Concord Special ProductsThe companion to Mommy and Me: Playgroup Favorites, More Playgroup Favorites contains both original compositions ("Mommy & Me" and "Take My Hand," both of which are also found on the Playgroup disc) and versions of traditional children's favorites ("Where Is Thumbkin?" "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," "London Bridge," "Old MacDonald Had a Farm"). As with its predecessor (although they were technically released simultaneously), the first half of the tracks contain vocals, and the second half are their instrumentals (although they are not listed on the back cover). If Playgroup Favorites was enjoyable and useful, More Playgroup Favorites should provide the same entertainment and value. ~ Marisa Brown

"Ultimate Broadway" (06/30/1998) Pop Vocal Various Artists, Arista Records (USA)Includes liner notes by Clive Davis & Miles Kreuger. Following in the footsteps of other installments in Arista's Ultimate series, Ultimate Broadway is an excellent sampler of some of the greatest songs and performances in the history of the Great White Way. Almost all of the 40 songs on the two discs in this collection are performed by the original Broadway casts, which makes it an excellent choice for casual fans. The Judy Collins and Aretha Franklin covers do sound a little out of place, but those are only two numbers on a generous compilation filled with great moments. The set runs from Oklahoma! to Rent, hitting such seminal performances as Carol Channing's "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend," Gertrude Lawrence's "Getting to Know You," Julie Andrews' "I Could Have Danced All Night," Rex Harrison's "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face," Mary Martin's "The Sound of Music," Carol Channing's "Hello, Dolly!," Zero Mostel's "If I Were a Rich Man," Barbra Streisand's "People," Liza Minnelli's "Cabaret," Andrea McArdle's "Tomorrow,"and Michael Crawford's "The Music of the Night," among many, many others. It may not be a definitive show tune collection, but it's certainly tremendously entertaining. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
