The ATS-505 is one of Sangean's least expensive AM/FM/shortwave radios. This unit includes a digital tuner that offers coverage of all shortwave bands and any frequency in between. You'll have access to five tuning methods, including direct frequency input using the front-panel numeric keypad, auto scan, manual scan, memory recall and rotary dial. Auto memory scan scrolls through your list of programmed stations and plays each momentarily before going on to the next. When you find a station you like, simply press a button to make the radio rest on it.An auto preset system sets the memory presets in order for you based on signal strength. You can store 45 radio stations in memory for fast recall. It's also highlighted by a fairly large front-panel backlit liquid crystal display that shows tuning and other information. The ATS-505 does double duty as a clock radio. It offers Sangean's Humane Wake System, which increases the volume of the alarm tone every 15 seconds for one minute to awaken you peacefully. The unit also sports an adjustable sleep timer. There's also a local/distant filter, to tailor the receiver's sensitivity to strong or weak reception conditions, and a hold function key, to prevent settings from being disturbed when the radio is being carried in a bag or backpack. This unit requires four D batteries. A wall outlet adapter isn't included, however, a carrying pouch and earbuds are. If you listen to FM through the earbuds (or a good pair of headphones), you'll hear stereo.

The ATS-909 is the premiere AM/FM/shortwave radio from Sangean -- not exactly a household name, but a major force in worldband portables. It offers continuous coverage of the AM, FM and shortwave bands -- the last of which are often shortchanged by smaller portables. It also has a whopping 306-station memory, with 261 of the saved locations preprogrammed at the factory to cover the world's most popular shortwave frequencies. You can also manually program in 18 AM, 18 FM and 9 LW (long-wave) stations. This model includes RDS reception, which allows the radio to display station call letters and the time for any station that transmits an RDS signal. This radio offers five tuning methods: direct frequency input, auto scan, manual scan, memory recall and rotary dial. A full front-panel numeric keypad should make punching in station frequencies easy if that's your gig. The front panel hosts a fairly large liquid crystal display that displays tuning and operational information, with switchable backlighting. One of this high-end portable radio's more unusual tuning capabilities is its auto SW search function, which automatically selects the strongest shortwave station on each of 29 shortwave preset "pages." It'll also automatically search and preset all AM, FM, or longwave memories based upon the signal strength of the stations. The ATS-909 also operates as a fully functional clock complete with alarm. In fact, it can display the time in 42 world capitols, and features the company's Dual Time System. It allows the monitoring of UTC (Coordinated Universal Time, formerly known as Greenwich Mean Time), and any other time zone simultaneously. The alarm offers three individual timers, and a sleep timer adjustable from 10-90 minutes.Though the single speaker delivers mono, the radio does deliver FM stereo through the headphone jack. You can power this radio with four AA batteries or the included adapter. The ATS-909 also comes with an ANT-60 portable antenna and carrying pouch. This product is also available in White. Though the ATS-909 doesn't include the cassette recorder you'd get with the ATS-818ACS, it does have line-out and control jacks for recording radio programs to an outboard cassette deck. This allows you to program the recorder to turn on at three different times. -- NW

Sangean's ATS-404 is an AM/FM shortwave radio. The radio can store up to 45 station presets into memory for fast recall. While the radio sports one speaker, it plays FM broadcasts in stereo when used with the included earbuds. The tiny radio is big on features. One of the highlights of this unit is the Humane Wake System. It acts like an alarm clock with a repeating beep tone that increases in volume every 15 seconds for one minute to wake you calmly. You can adjust the time that you want the radio to wake you, and when you want a few extra minutes of sleep there is a snooze control. In addition, the ATS-404 sports a dual time display that shows local time and UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), which is universally used for worldband program listings. Other features include a tone control, lock-switch and automatic memory scan. The radio is powered by four AA batteries, which are not included. What is included are earbuds and a carrying case.

Looking for a worldband radio that lets you record? Look at the Sangean ATS-818ACS. This unusual worldband-radio-cum-cassette-recorder is a variation of the Sangean ATS-818 worldband radio.Worldband radio buffs regard both this model and the Sangean ATS-818 (the version without cassette) as longtime classics of shortwave radio. These hardy perennials have attracted rave reviews from the Passport to Worldband Radio (the shortwave enthusiast's Bible) and are widely considered among the best mid-sized shortwave units of all time. With very high sensitivity for its size, the ATS-818ACS can pull in weak signals that many same-sized units would miss. That makes it a nice compromise between giant, complex shortwave table radios and smaller portables that miss most of the fascinating international talk and music programming that's flying through the air. Yet it's no larger than the ATS-818 version without cassette. The speaker is just a little smaller -- 3, rather than 4, inches wide. This radio delivers quite solidly in the features department. It offers five tuning methods: direct frequency input, auto scan, manual scan, memory recall and rotary dial. A full front-panel numeric keypad should make punching in station frequencies easy if that's your gig. It functions with either the built-in dipole rod antenna or an external wire antenna, both of which are included. The front-panel hosts a fairly large LCD (with switchable backlighting) that displays tuning and operational information. Other highlights include 16-band shortwave reception, and a programmable digital tuner with 54 presets (nine more than the ATS-818, which has 45 presets). Like many of Sangean's radios, this model even supplies stereo FM radio via its headphone jack. This unit includes a clock that keeps track of both the local time and UTC (Coordinated Universal Time, formerly known as Greenwich Mean Time). That way, you'll be able to follow the programming schedules for world-wide radio programs. Naturally, the clock also works as a standard alarm clock, complete with buzzer. It also includes a sleep timer. What's more, you can set this radio to record to its built-in cassette deck when you're not around. You'll never miss another foreign show because you're asleep.Other amenities include a tone control. This radio can be powered by four D batteries (plus three AA cells for backup) or the included AC adapter. If you're willing to give up the cassette deck for a unit that includes a larger speaker, check out the ATS-818. -- NW

Panasonic's RF-B11 multi-band radio is a good entry-level worldband radio. The analog, 12-band receiver can tune AM (called MW on shortwave radios) and FM stations as well as shortwave and worldband signals. Like most radios with analog tuners, this one does not offer station presets. LED indicators let you know when a station is tuned in and when an FM station is being received in stereo. Though you won't hear the FM station in stereo through the unit's single built-in 3-inch speaker, you can experience stereo through the headphone jack, though headphones are not included. The sound can be modified using the tone switch, which offers both high and low settings. While batteries will probably be the primary source of power, as this is a portable radio, it can also be plugged into the wall using an optional AC adapter. A hand strap, rather than a handle, can be used to carry the radio, while a stand is included to add stability if you rest the unit on a surface. -- PJR

The ICF-SW100S is one of Sony's more compact world band radios. While it doesn't offer direct access tuning, or manual dial tuning, like some larger radios, its 50 station presets, 24-city name/time display, and compact size add to the idea that this radio is meant to be taken on the road. A built-in world clock lets you figure the time difference between your location and the shortwave station you're listening to.This radio tunes stereo FM, plus AM and shortwave. Tuning methods include auto scan tuning, which hones in on strong signals within a selected band and lets you listen for a few seconds while you decide if you want to stop there or move on. The step tuning option lets you move up or down the selected band in one-kilohertz increments. There's a telescoping antenna for FM and shortwave, and a built-in antenna for AM.Conveniences include an alarm to wake you up, a sleep timer, an LED tuning indicator, and station naming and editing. Sound is output either through the built-in 1.5-inch speaker, or the headphone jack. The unit runs on two AA batteries and is rated to achieve approximately 20 hours of playback from a set of batteries. The included AC adapter can also be used.If you'd just as soon trade size for cash, you can check out Sony's ICF-2010, which costs about $30 less and offers more tuning options, but is larger than the ICF-SW100S.-- PJR
