"The Collection: That's the Way of the World/All 'N All/Gratitude [Box]" (05/04/2004) R&B Earth, Wind & Fire, Legacy RecordingsThe Collection contains 3 separate albums: THAT'S THE WAY OF THE WORLD (1975)/ALL 'N ALL (1977)/ GRATITUDE (1975). The Collection is a three-disc package that houses Earth, Wind & Fire's That's the Way of the World (1975), Gratitude (1975), and All 'n All (1977). These are the reissue versions released in 1999 by Columbia/Legacy, so they feature remastered sound, bonus tracks, and useful liner notes. It's baffling that the label chose to include Gratitude -- a live album -- rather than 1976's Spirit. While Gratitude is a phenomenal live album, it should be lower on a fan's priority list than another one of the group's studio albums. Regardless, this is a thrifty way to obtain a lot of Earth, Wind & Fire, all of which is compulsory. ~ Andy Kellman

"Open Our Eyes [Remaster]" (04/10/2001) R&B Earth, Wind & Fire, Columbia (USA)Earth, Wind & Fire: Al McKay (vocals, guitar, percussion); Verdine White (vocals, bass, percussion); Maurice White, Philip Bailey (vocals, percussion); Johnny Graham (guitar, percussion); Andrew Woodfolk (flute, soprano saxophone); Larry Dunn (piano, organ, Moog synthesizer); Ralph Johnson (drums, percussion). Recorded at Caribou Ranch, Netherland, Colorado. Digitally remastered by Arnie Acosta. Finally, after almost half a decade of serious dues-paying, Earth, Wind & Fire took off commercially with its fifth album, Open Our Eyes. EWF had been delivering great albums since 1971, but it wasn't until 1974 that the public proved genuinely receptive to Maurice White's mystical and unorthodox take on soul and funk. No longer would EWF enjoy only a small cult following. Thanks to treasures like "Kalimba Song," the gritty funk smoker "Mighty Mighty," and the unforgettable "Devotion," Open Our Eyes became EWF's first gold album and went to the top of the R&B charts. It's also interesting to note that with this album, singer Jessica Cleaves was gone, resulting in the first time EWF had an all-male lineup. The 2001 CD reissue adds four previously unreleased bonus tracks, one of them a "Walkin' in N'awlins" mix of "Fair But So Uncool," though the other three songs did not appear on the original album in an alternate form. ~ Alex Henderson

"Head to the Sky" (01/24/1989) R&B Earth, Wind & Fire, Columbia (USA)Earth, Wind & Fire: Verdine White (vocals, bass, percussion); Maurice White, Phillip Bailey (vocals, percussion); Jessica Cleaves (vocals); Al McKay (guitar, sitar, percussion); Johnny Graham (guitar, percussion); Andrew Woodfolks (flute, soprano saxophone); Ralph Johnson (drums, percussion). Recorded at Clover Recorders, Hollywood, California. Personnel: Maurice White (vocals, drums, kalimba); Philip Bailey (vocals, congas, percussion); Verdine White (vocals, percussion); Jessica Cleaves (vocals); Al McKay (guitar, sitar, percussion); Johnny Graham (guitar, percussion); Andrew Woolfolk (flute, soprano saxophone); Larry Dunn (clarinet, piano, organ); Ralph Johnson (drums, percussion). Recording information: Clover Recording Studios, Hollywood, CA. As phenomenally popular as Earth, Wind & Fire was from the mid-'70s to the early '80s, it's easy to forget that the band was hardly an overnight success. With Head to the Sky -- EWF's fourth album overall, second with Philip Bailey, and second for Columbia -- Maurice White's very spiritual and ambitious brand of soul and funk was starting to pay off commercially. The Latin-influenced "Evil" became the soulsters' biggest hit up to that point, and material ranging from the hauntingly pretty title song (which boasts one of Bailey's finest performances ever) to the jazz fusion gem "Zanzibar" is just as rewarding. The lineup White unveiled with Last Days and Time was working out beautifully; Bailey was clearly proving to be a major asset. Also worth noting is the presence of singer Jessica Cleaves, who left after this album and, several years later, resurfaced in George Clinton's eccentric female group the Brides of Funkenstein. EWF still had what was basically a cult following, but that was beginning to change with Head to the Sky. And when EWF took off commercially in 1974 and 1975, many new converts went back and saw for themselves just how excellent an album Head to the Sky was. ~ Alex Henderson

"The Need of Love" (03/11/1997) R&B Earth, Wind & Fire, Ol' SkoolEarth, Wind & Fire: Wade Flemons, Sherry Scott (vocals); Don Whitehead (vocals, acoustic & electric pianos); Maurice White (vocals, kalimba, drums, percussion); Michael Beal (guitar, harmonica); Chet Washington (tenor saxophone); Alex Thomas (trombone); Verdine A. White (bass); Yackov Ben Israel (conga, percussion). Additional personnel: Oscar Brashear (trumpet). Producer: Joe Wissert. Reissue producer: Kevin Tong. Digital remastering by Lee Herschberg. Personnel: Don Whitehead (vocals, piano); Maurice White (vocals, drums, kalimba, percussion); Sherry Scott, Wade Flemons (vocals); Michael Beal (guitar, harmonica); Chet Washington (tenor saxophone); Oscar Brashear (trumpet); Alexander Thomas (trombone); Yackov Ben Israel (congas, percussion). Audio Remasterers: Al Schmitt; Lee Herschberg. Recording information: Sunset Sound Recording Studio, Hollywood, CA. Photographer: Roland Charles. Unknown Contributor Role: Don Whitehead. Arranger: Earth, Wind & Fire. The ambitions of Earth, Wind & Fire only increased after their stellar debut, and the group brought an abstract sense of composition to their sophomore record, The Need of Love. The opener, a ten-minute piece named "Energy," is proof enough, with several extended passages inspired by everything from free jazz as well as in-the-pocket funk like Kool & the Gang. The next song up, "Beauty" is also positive and intriguing, though in an overly similar groove as "Fan the Fire" from the first album. The closer, a cover of Donny Hathaway's gloriously funky "Everything Is Everything," does justice to the original (and that's saying a lot). Compared to the debut, The Need of Love lacked a sense of exuberance as well as a passel of solid songs and performances. ~ John Bush

"Spirit [Remaster]" (04/10/2001) R&B Earth, Wind & Fire, Legacy RecordingsAlso available in a 3-pack with THAT'S THE WAY OF THE WORLD and ALL IN ALL. Earth, Wind & Fire: Maurice White, Philip Bailey (vocals, percussion); Al McKay, Johnny Graham (guitar); Andrew Woolfolk (tenor saxophone); Larry Dunn (keybaords); Verdine White (bass); Fred White, Ralph Johnson (percussion). All tracks have been digitally remastered. The follow-up to the band's breakthrough album THAT'S THE WAY OF THE WORLD, 1976's SPIRIT builds on Earth, Wind & Fire's signature blend of funk, jazz, and smooth soul. An ambitious record, SPIRIT successfully captures what Earth, Wind & Fire were all about--the melding of a wide range of musical styles with a positive and self-aware philosophy. Though the band had experienced difficulties when producer and arranger Charles Stepney died halfway through the sessions for SPIRIT, the progressive funk workout "Getaway" (one of the album's highlights) was a runaway R&B hit. High tenor vocalist Philip Bailey is featured on the romantic ballad "Imagination" and on the shimmering title track. "Saturday Nite" brings things back down to street level with its solid funk grooves, while "Biyo," an instrumental with a jazz-like structure, gives the group's musicians plenty of room to stretch out. The gospel-inspired "Burnin' Bush," which showcases the group's renowned vocal leads and harmonies, rounds out this fine release. (Note: The 2001 edition of SPIRIT features five bonus tracks.)

"The Essential Earth, Wind & Fire [Limited]" (09/27/2005) R&B Earth, Wind & Fire, Legacy RecordingsEarth, Wind & Fire: Maurice White (vocals, kalimba, timbales, drums); Verdine White (vocals, bass, percussion); Philip Bailey (vocals, congas, percussion); Larry Dunn (piano, organ, synthesizer, programming). Additional personnel includes: Ken Yerke, Harris Goldman (violin); Rollice Dale (viola); Dennis Karmazyn Harry Schultz (cello); Fred Jackson Jr., Herman Riley, Jerome Richardson (saxophone); Tommy Johnson (tuba); Harvey Mason, Paulinho Da Costa (percussion); Beloyd Taylor (background vocals). Producers: Maurice White, Joe Wissert, Charles Stepney, Al McKay. Compilation producers: Leo Sacks, Maurice White. Recorded between 1973 & 1983. Includes liner notes by Leo Sacks, Virginia Prescott, and William C, Rhoden. All tracks have been digitally remastered. "These songs are as close as we came to perfection," says group founder and leader Maurice White in the liner notes to THE ESSENTIAL EARTH, WIND & FIRE. Given the quality of the music in this double-disc package, it's hard to argue. Remarkable for both its commercial success and its inventive hybrid of funk, soul, jazz, and African folk music (White's kalimba is featured as a solo instrument on "Evil," for example), Earth, Wind & Fire are deservedly regarded as one of the finest ensembles of the 1970s. A thorough retrospective of the band's evolution and multiple stylistic directions (often achieved within one song), ESSENTIAL spans from the early, earthy funk of "Mighty Mighty" to the disco-flavored "Boogie Wonderland" (with the Emotions). In between are all of the group's smash hits--the infectious "Shining Star," the feel-good "Sing a Song," their jazzy interpretation of Lennon/McCartney's "Got to Get You Into My Life," and the early '80s dance-floor favorite "Let's Groove," to name a few. Throughout, complex horn parts, rich vocal harmonies, and the formidable chops of the band's instrumentalists dazzle on ballads, heady improvisations, and funk workouts alike. This is the definitive compilation of one soul's mightiest groups.

"That's the Way of the World [Limited] [Remaster]" (09/06/2005) R&B Earth, Wind & Fire, Mobile Fidelity Sound LabAlso available in a 3-pack with SPIRIT and ALL IN ALL. Earth, Wind & Fire: Maurice White (vocals, kalimba, drums); Verdine White (vocals, bass, percussion); Philip Bailey (vocals, congas, percussion); Al McKay (guitar, percussion); Johnny Graham (guitar); Andrew Woolfolk (flute, soprano & tenor saxophones); Larry Dunn (piano, organ, synthesizer); Ralph Johnson, Fred White (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Matepe Ensemble, Saini Murira. Producers: Maurice White, Charles Stepney. Reissue producer: Leo Sacks. Includes liner notes by Robert Lipsyte. Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. Providing the soundtrack for the film of the same name, THAT'S THE WAY OF THE WORLD was originally released in 1975. The movie featured Earth, Wind & Fire as the Group and a young Harvey Keitel as their record producer. The album topped the charts for three weeks and is an R&B/funk classic. The opening chords of the number-one smash "Shining Star" begin a very special record. The song's positive lyrics are laid over a fabulous groove and arrangement. A smooth trumpet piece leads into the soprano harmonies of the title track. "Happy Feelin'" picks up the pace with standout percussion and sax solos. "All About Love" is a soulful ballad featuring Maurice White on vocals. "Reasons," sung by the equally competent Philip Bailey, takes the listener on a journey to the land of R&B perfection. "Africano," featuring a flute intro, is a flowing funkified number that would be the inspiration for many disco tunes of later years. "See the Light" showcases the production talents of Maurice White. This reissue also contains five unreleased demo versions, making it an essential purchase.

This is part of Legacy's "Rhythm & Soul" series. This 17-track best of collection of songs by soul, funk and disco band Earth, Wind And Fire includes "Shining Star," "Boogie Wonderland," "September," and "After The Love Has Gone." German release. Columbia's 1998 collection of Earth, Wind & Fire's Greatest Hits in many ways stands as the group's definitive compilation. Even though there have been more extensive overviews of the group's work, such as the triple-disc set The Eternal Dance, this is the first collection to contain all of the group's biggest hits on one disc. All but one ("Love Music") of the ten songs from 1978's The Best of Earth, Wind & Fire are included, while six of the ten songs from The Best Of, Vol. 2 are featured; the remaining two cuts on the 17-track collection are the minor early single "Kalimba Story" and the album cut "Gratitude." These are fine additions to the album, but the true meat of the collection lies in the hits -- "Shining Star," "That's the Way of the World," "Sing a Song," "Getaway," "Got to Get You Into My Life," "September," "Boogie Wonderland," "After the Love Has Gone," "Let's Groove," and so many others. They might not be presented in chronological order (the only flaw in this otherwise flawless collection), but it's a sheer delight to have all of the hits on one terrifically entertaining and valuable disc. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"The Promise" (06/17/2003) R&B Earth, Wind & Fire, Cutting Edge (Japan)Earth, Wind & Fire: Maurice White (vocals, malimba); Philip Bailey (vocals); Verdine White (bass); Ralph Johnson (percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel includes: Eric Walls (guitar); Preston Glass (keyboards, programming); Gary Bias (saxophone); Ray Brown (trumpet); Reggie Young, George Bohanon (trombone); Danny Reyes (percussion); Gregory Curtis (programming, background vocals); Wanda Vaughn, Sheila Hutchinson (background vocals). Recorded at Magnet Vision Studios, Santa Monica, California. "Hold Me" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance. Japanese edition includes two bonus tracks. Earth Wind & Fire's umpteenth album since the band's first incarnation in Chicago at the dawn of the '70s may lack its founding member--Maurice White retired from active duty in 1996 suffering from Parkinson's disease--but all the familiar elements are otherwise in place, notably Philip Bailey's extraordinary vocal range and a plethora of horn-driven arrangements. If the tempos have slowed down a little with time, the songwriting and musicianship remain in full effect, particularly on such smooch-worthy cuts as "Hold Me" and "Wonderland," the latter in particular featuring an irresistible chorus interwoven with the band's trademark sinuous horn lines. THE PROMISE is the softer side of EW&F, but softer in this case isn't shorthand for dull--the rhythms sway, Bailey's voice is still in improbably magnificent form, and the music still sounds as effortless as it always did. THE PROMISE delivers the whole Earth, Wind & Fire package in its glorious, theatrical entirety.

Recorded at Sony Studios, Santa Monica, California and1 Sunset Sound, Hollywood, California. AVATAR, the 13 track album from soul superstars Earth, Wind & Fire, features "Keep It Real" and "Cruising." The 1997 version of EWF launches its album with a jarring, unexpected drum thwack in the first bar of the first song, suggesting that the dynamics of modern hip-hop and even modern rock have not passed by this funk institution. The band quickly drops back into its tried-and-true love-song formation, though, giving most of the album over to creamy-voiced Philip Bailey who urges other men to keep their love in their lives, and tries to convince a woman that he's the true love in hers. There are occasional new-school funk beats, and old-school blasts aplenty from the EWF horns, but the album belongs to Bailey. His showcase ballad "Cruising," which if you close your eyes can evoke memories of the great "Reasons," should finally erase all memories of Phil Collins from EWF fans' minds.

Arrangers: Jerry Hey; Walter Afanasieff. With the Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney releasing fresh and vital albums in 2005, it comes as no surprise that Earth, Wind & Fire are still going strong as well. But rather than simply hearkening back to their classic formula, EWF update their sound to keep pace with contemporary R&B and hip-hop, opting for a sharp, polished production that fits right in on urban radio, while still staying true to the pan-global grooves and complex, technically advanced playing on which the group built its reputation. A host of guest stars--nearly all of whom are from an up-and-coming generation of soul--appear here. Black Eyed Peas' Will. I. Am. co-writes and performs on the opener "Lovely People," while Outkast's Big Boi steps up to the mic on "This Is How I Feel." The sensual crooner Brian McKnight lends his pipes to the ballad "To You," and even Kenny G. puts in an appearance on a saxophone-based instrumental. Beneath all this is the classic EWF vibe, and the band's ability to effectively "modernize" themselves is admirable and worth a close listen.
