DAYDREAM was nominated for 1996 Grammy Awards for Album Of The Year and Best Pop Album. "One Sweet Day" was nominated for Record Of The Year and Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals; "Fantasy" was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance; and "Always Be My Baby" was nominated for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. On DAYDREAM, Mariah Carey's singing expands the panorama of its emotional release--her voice, having been a strictly powerful pure instrument, now taking on the thespian strategies of great vocalists. She has added subtle understatement to her bag of tricks. On the hit single "Fantasy," a groovin' piece of soulful pop based on a sample of the Tom Tom Club's "Genius Of Love," the chorus layers generous helpings of her voice. But rather than featuring the high-pitched lead she's famous for, the vocal parts reflect off each other in penetrating harmony. When she gets to cooing the key "I'm in heaven..." refrain as the fade-out hook, Carey's voice carries an enticing faux-innocence to match any of Madonna's good girl/bad girl come-ons. There is also her cover of Journey's "Open Arms," on which the a capella opening drifts into the stardust sound effects and the electric piano accompaniment, and the singer pours herself into a striking, minor-key declaration. There's also a more obvious modern R&B sheen to DAYDREAM than any of Carey's previous work. "One Sweet Day," her collaboration with Boyz II Men, sways with the sugary gospel cum synth-soul feel of the Philadelphia quartet's grandest romantic ballads. "Always Be My Baby," co-produced by Carey and Jermaine Dupri, expresses the simple, catchy melodic poise of the R&B girl-groups of the late 1950's and early '60s. And a Carey album wouldn't be complete without a track that rushes the listener onto the dance-floor. DAYDREAM'S nominee is David Morales' rolling "Daydream Interlude (Fantasy Sweet Dub Mix)" which explodes from a duet between Carey's vocal runs and a minimal keyboard part, into a house groove spurred on by tinklingly funky piano licks.

"The Remixes" (10/14/2003) R&B Carey, Mariah, Columbia (USA)Personnel includes: Mariah Carey, Joe (vocals); Busta Rhymes, Lord Tariq, Peter Gunz, Krayzie Bone, Wishbone, Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes, Da Brat, Nas, Snoop Dogg, Ludacris, Jadakiss, Bone Crusher (rap vocals). With THE REMIXES, Mariah Carey presents another compilation that can go on the shelf next to her #1's and GREATEST HITS. This two-disc set features Carey's best bits reworked by a number of famous names in the dance world including David Morales, Junior Vasquez, and C&C Music Factory (aka David Cole and Robert Clivilles). As a thumbnail portrait of this Long Island native's career, the collection balances dance-floor-ready remixes with grittier hip-hop tracks. As a result, the first disc features nine of her biggest club hits, including "Dream Lover," "Fantasy," "Emotions," and "Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)." Also notable is the Carey/Vasquez team-up on "Heartbreaker/If You Should Ever Be Lonely." Disc two can easily be considered the Mariah Carey rap disc, as many of the songs feature her work with some of hip-hop's biggest stars, including Snoop Dogg ("Crybaby"), Busta Rhymes and the Flipmode Squad ("I Know What You Want"), and the always-outrageous O.D.B. ("Fantasy").

"Butterfly" (10/16/2001) R&B Carey, Mariah, Phantom Import DistributionPersonnel: Mariah Carey, Mase the Lox, Dru Hill (vocals); Michael Cirro (guitar); Donald Parker (piano, keyboards); Walter Afanasieff (keyboards, synthesizers, programming); Stevie J, Dan Shea, Cory Rooney (keyboards, programming); Peter Scwartz (keyboards); Gary Montoute (Hammond B-3 organ); Artie Reynolds (bass); Nathaniel Townsley (drums); Q-tip (programming); Krayzie Bone, Melonie Daniels, Wish Bone, Mary Ann Tatum, Kelly Price, Trey Lorenz, Clarence (background vocals). Producers include: Sean "Puffy" Combs, Stevie J, Mariah Carey, Walter Afanasieff, David Morales. Engineers include: Dana Jon Chappelle, Rich Travali, Glen Marchese, Mike Scott, David Gleeson. Principally recorded at: The Hit Factory, New York, New York. "Butterfly" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. "Honey" was nominated for 1998 Grammy Awards for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song. 1997, Japanese version includes two bonus remixes of 'Honey' (So So Def Radio Mix) & Def ClubMix; Comes packaged in a full color slip case with an extra booklet of photos. A mature and contemplative Mariah Carey emerges as if from a chrysalis on her seventh album, displaying her now-familiar otherworldly vocal abilities tempered by a new restraint, as well as an infallible ear for irresistible rhythm-based, hook-laden music. BUTTERFLY's uptempo songs, including "Honey" and "Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)," are flawlessly produced and catchy, and the title track soars with the spirit of independence and freedom. BUTTERFLY is full of such hopeful, uplifting moments, but it is equally infused with a deep sense of sadness and loss, as displalyed on the album's numerous ballads, most notably "Breakdown," a simple, honest song with a "Tears Of A Clown" motif, on which Carey sings of hiding her sadness from the world. Both joy and grief are explored on this album with equal tenacity.

"My All [US CD Single #3] [Maxi Single]" (06/19/1998) R&B Carey, Mariah, Columbia (USA)Performers include: Mariah Carey, Lord Tariq, Peter Gunz. A curious thing happened with Mariah Carey's "My All." Halfway through its chart life, the song, a big adult contemporary hit (and a big, classic Carey-styled ballad) which managed to top the pop charts for one week (without even making Top Ten airplay), was remixed into "My All/Stay Awhile" and issued as a separate maxi-single. There was already one maxi-single on the market for "My All." The new version, however, is almost a completely different song. Carey enlisted Jermaine Dupri to transform the ballad into a hip-hop summer jam, and featured then-hot rappers Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz lending their rhyming skills. As is typically the case with Dupri songs, its breezy, bouncy, funky, and light. The maxi-single contains both a version with rap and one without. There are also two good but somewhat interchangeable club/house mixes of the original "My All," courtesy of David Morales. Finally, there is a fantastic remix of the album track "The Roof." That song was a minor hit in Europe, and for this single, Morales turned it into a funky, groovy club jam with a slammin' bassline and gangly guitars to excellent effect. So in essence, this unusual single is comprised of a totally new, retitled version of "My All," two dance mixes of the song, and one great remix of "The Roof." A good buy for Carey fans and collectors. ~ Jose Promis This maxi-single was the first of two released for Mariah Carey's chart-topper "My All" (the other featured a drastically altered hip-hop version titled "My All/Stay Awhile"). This single is more of an EP, featuring two versions of "My All" and remixes of three tracks from her album Butterfly. The first track is the original album version of "My All," which is a ballad. That is followed by the "Classic Club Mix" of "My All," in which the song is turned into a nine-minute dance track, complete with Spanish-styled acoustic guitars. Thankfully, "My All" is one of those ballads that, unlike many others of its time, lends itself surprisingly well to dance-remix treatment. The other three remixes aren't drastically different from the album versions, but to collectors that probably does not matter. The version of "Breakdown" included here, an R&B track that became an urban radio hit, features Bone Thugs-N-Harmony a little more prominently than the album version. There's also the Mobb Deep remix of "The Roof," which, save for the new rap, again sounds just like the original. Finally, there's an extended house mix of the dance track "Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)," which extends the almost too-short album version of the reprise into a full-blown, almost-ten minute house jam. This single almost plays like a Butterfly part two, featuring slightly altered versions (except for the "My All" dance mix) of album tracks, which, unless one is a diehard fan, is probably of little interest. ~ Jose Promis

"Can't Take That Away [CD] [Maxi Single]" (06/06/2000) R&B Carey, Mariah, Columbia (USA)Can't Take That Away was the final stateside single released from Mariah Carey's album Rainbow, although in Europe she followed it up with the chart-topper Against All Odds. Can't Take That Away proved to be Carey's first miss -- the single didn't even crack the U.S. Top 20. Stranger still, it charted as its B-side, "Crybaby" (which featured Snoop Doggy Dogg). So there's actually no record of Can't Take That Away ever making the U.S. charts (save for a lowly peak on the dance chart). That said, the single is equipped with two dance mixes, an instrumental dance mix, and the album version of "Can't Take That Away," as well as the album version of "Crybaby." The first mix, the "Morales Revival Triumphant Mix," is just that, a joyful and triumphant ten-and-a-half-minute dance music free for all filled with Carey ad-libs, background singers, and deep house grooves. The second mix, "Morales Club Mix," fails to hit its mark because it uses the actual vocals from the original version (which is a ballad), and somehow the vocals don't seem to fit quite right over the dance beats, resulting in something of an awkward-sounding remix (possibly a first for Carey -- her dance remixes have always been first-rate). The instrumental version of this dance mix is great -- hence, this is one of those ballads that should have been left just that -- a ballad. Finally, the single ends with "Crybaby," which is a sleek, sly, slinky, and smart mid-tempo R&B song, with Mariah lending uncharacteristically subtle vocals alongside Snoop's playful raps. The last track is the original version of "Can't Take That Away," which is a soaring ballad that reaches an amazing, heartfelt climax during its final and grandest chorus. The song, however, comes off a little too much as a Carey self-empowerment tune, so if one doesn't mind the ego, then one can enjoy the song. ~ Jose Promis

"I Still Believe [Maxi Single]" (02/09/1999) R&B Carey, Mariah, Columbia (USA)Producers: Steven "Stevie J." Jordan, Mike Manson, Mariah Carey, Damiazza, David Morales. From her #1's collection, Mariah Carey released her version of the Brenda K. Starr hit "I Still Believe" as a tribute to the singer who (as legend has it) gave Carey her first break in the music business. Carey's version was a Top Five hit, largely due to the maxi-single's packaging and marketing, which featured a flesh-baring Carey on the cover and contained five completely distinct versions. The single opens with Carey's original version of the song, which pales somewhat in comparison to Starr's more passionate interpretation. The second track, "Stevie J. Clean Remix," featuring raps by Mocha and Amil, bringing to mind the backing music one would find in an early-'70s scary Saturday morning cartoon. The other urban mix, titled "I Still Believe/Pure Imagination," features raps by Krayzie Bone and da Brat, and sounds like a completely different song. That version took on a life of its own, becoming its own hit on the U.S. R&B charts (for all intents and purposes, it should have been its own song, titled "Pure Imagination," because, beyond lyrical references, it has absolutely nothing in common with the original song). The mix is, nonetheless, breezy, laid-back, and typical of mid-'90s urban/hip-hop, and features da Brat saying "lose the ego," all the while self-aggrandizing herself. Finally, two dance/house mixes are included. The first is "Morales' Classic Club Mix," which is a standard, but well-made dance remake, and is quite smooth, with Carey giving a great vocal performance. The second is "The Kings Mix," which is a more straight-on house mix, with no real verse and chorus, and again, has virtually nothing in common with the original song. So, in effect, this "single" is more of an EP than anything else, which is fine, and explains, as is often the case with Carey products, why it was such a success. ~ Jose Promis

It was clear early on in her recording career that Long Island's own Mariah Carey possessed a rare combination of qualities that would make her special. She had a commanding voice, an uncanny ear for a hit, commanding stage presence and an effervescent personality. She was, in short, an American pop diva just waiting to be discovered. When her eponymous 1990 debut sold more than 12 million copies, it was clear Carey would become the pop queen she'd always dreamed she'd be. From the doo-wop-influenced opening track "Vision of Love" to the sweet, last-dance ballad "Love Takes Time," Carey's debut was one of biggest-selling records of the '90s. It was so popular, in fact, that four of the 11 tracks on the album hit #1 on the Billboard singles chart. MARIAH CAREY is Top 40 perfection with a remarkable young talent at the center of it all.

"The Emancipation of Mimi" (04/12/2005) Rock & Pop Carey, Mariah, MonarC/IslandPersonnel: Mariah Carey (vocals); Trey Lorenz (vocals); Nelly, Snoop Dogg, Twista (rap vocals); Chop Horns (horns); James "Big Jim" Wright (keyboards); Randy Jackson (bass instrument); Charles Drayton (drums); Fatman Scoop, Jermaine Dupri, Johnta Austin (background vocals). With the lofty title THE EMANCIPATION OF MIMI, it's clear that Mariah Carey wants listeners to know she's releasing an important record. Here she aims to reveal an aspect of herself that has previously been held back by career missteps and tabloid-worthy drama. It's refreshing, then, that 2005's EMANCIPATION returns the focus to Carey's remarkable voice, as the singer makes her most accomplished record in over a decade. Carey opens the album by exhibiting some of the most sincerely soulful vocals of her career on the one-two punch of the up-tempo "It's Like That" and the beautiful ballad "We Belong Together." Her able voice expertly complements both the hazy hip-hop of Snoop Dogg on "Say Somethin'" and the acrobatics of Twista on the dream-like "One and Only." In her early years, Carey would have adorned the latter track with vocal tricks to show off her five-octave voice, but she has wisely learned to rein in her frills. In fact, restraint is the key word on THE EMANCIPATION OF MIMI, a straightforward and satisfying pop-R&B collection.

EMOTIONS, the 1991 chart-topping release from dance/pop chanteuse Mariah Carey, showed the world that she would have no sophomore slump. With her knack for writing hit material, Carey turned out a few smashes off of this release. The title cut was #1 on the Billboard chart for three weeks. Mariah sings her heart out on the power ballad "Can't Let Go," which went to #2 in early '92. Her distinctive multi-octave range allows her to manipulate casual dance/pop melodies, making them soar.
