"Love Songs: Greatest Duets" (01/14/2003) R&B Gaye, Marvin, Motown RecordsPersonnel includes: Marvin Gaye (vocals); Betty Wright, Tammi Terrell, Mary Wells, Oma Page, Kim Weston, Diana Ross (vocals). Producers include: Harvey Fuqua, Johnny Bristol, Nikolas Ashford, Johnny Bristol, Smokey Robinson. Compilation producer: Harry Weinger. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Audio Mixers: Suha Gur; Ellen Fitton. Arrangers: Angelo Morris; Betty Wright. Marvin Gaye's Love Songs: Greatest Duets gathers most of his best-known duets, organizing them by singing partner. After getting off to a poor, but well-meaning start with a 1994 version of "Distant Lover" that pairs Gaye's original vocals with re-recorded vocals by Betty Wright and tinny-sounding production, the album does a 180 by offering up some of the best work Gaye did with his ultimate duet partner, Tammi Terrell. Along with definitive songs like "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing" and "You're All I Need to Get By," the collection also includes lesser-known gems such as the lovely "If This World Were Mine." Gaye's duet with Kim Weston, "It Takes Two," is another of the album's essential tracks, while most of the rest of Love Songs consists of pleasant but relatively obscure duets such as "Once Upon a Time" and "What's the Matter With You Baby" with Mary Wells and "So Good to Be Loved by You" with Oma Page. "Pledging My Love," Gaye's duet with Diana Ross, rounds out this enjoyable collection. While this album doesn't have quite the impact of the Love Songs collection of his solo work or Love Songs: Bedroom Ballads, it's still effortlessly soulful and romantic. ~ Heather Phares

"Love Songs: Bedroom Ballads" (01/15/2002) R&B Gaye, Marvin, Motown RecordsPersonnel includes: Marvin Gaye (vocals); Bobby Scott (arranger). Producers include: Bobby Scott, Marvin Gaye, Leon Ware, T-Boy Ross. Compilation producers: David Ritz, Harry Weinger. Recorded between 1967 & 1981. Includes liner notes by David Ritz. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Audio Mixers: Calvin Harris ; Marvin Gaye; Art Stewart; Bill Schnee. Liner Note Author: David Ritz. Recording information: Detroit, MI (01/31/1967-01/15/1981); Los Angeles, CA (01/31/1967-01/15/1981); New York, NY (01/31/1967-01/15/1981). Arrangers: Bobby Scott ; Marvin Gaye. If the midline-priced Marvin Gaye compilation Love Songs: Bedroom Ballads seems to have two titles grafted together, that's not inappropriate to the album's contents. The album's love songs are the seven romantic standards Gaye labored over for more than a decade and never released during his lifetime, tracks that finally were issued in 1997 under the title Vulnerable. Working with lush string arrangements arranged by Bobby Scott, Gaye rewrites the melodies of familiar songs like "The Shadow of Your Smile" (heard here with a previously unreleased alternate vocal), rendering the material fresh and claiming it for his own. The "bedroom ballads" portion of the album, interspersed with the other songs, consists of six tracks that appeared originally on Gaye's albums Let's Get It On, I Want You, In Our Lifetime, and Here, My Dear. Written or co-written by Gaye himself, these songs employ the singer's mixture of romance with blunt eroticism, notably on tunes with titles like "You Sure Love to Ball" and "Funk Me," and on "Since I Had You," which contains an orgasmic background vocal track that couldn't be bettered by Donna Summer. Gaye collaborator and biographer David Ritz conceived this compilation, which is true to Gaye's romantic sensibility, a combination of sophistication and physicality. ~ William Ruhlmann

Even if you already have these 11 classic Marvin Gaye tracks, you'll want to hear these legendary surround-sound remixes. The sound quality is remarkably clear and vibrant. Four of the 11 selections are duets: three with Tammi Terrell and his chartbuster with Kim Weston, "It Takes Too," which is positively mind-blowing, as is his knee-dropping, heartbreaking live rendition of "Distant Lover." Ear caviar for the music connoisseur doesn't come cheap; this brief CD is pricey, over 20 dollars at discount online shops -- not available in cassettes, but of course you can dub your own. ~ Andrew Hamilton

Originally released in 1971, WHAT'S GOING ON remains a landmark album, one that redefined music with powerful, anthemic songs that remain pertinent to this day. Before WHAT'S GOING ON, R&B albums were collections of singles, with secondary "filler" material rounding out the LPs. Marvin Gaye changed all this by releasing a concept album that went beyond the usual boy-meets-girl scenario, weaving together an aural collage of societal ills. "Crime is increasing/Trigger-happy policing," from "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)," is as potent a line tod

Relishing the artistic freedom afforded by the success of WHAT'S GOING ON, Marvin Gaye recorded this sultry paean to sex. Where its predecessor relied on complex arrangements, the straightforward sound of LET'S GET IT ON focused attention on its tight rhythms, strong melodies, and Gaye's expressive, nuanced singing. For sheer sensual come-on, it's hard to beat the title track, one of the finest celebrations of the joys of human chemistry ever recorded. But the self-explanatory "Come Get to This" and "You Sure Love to Ball" aren't far behind in terms of passionate execution and visceral impact. Though LET'S GET IT ON has its reflective moments, notably the beautiful ballad "Distant Lover," Gaye's focus is on the here and now, and the intensity of his vocal performances and the silky, fluid feel of the arrangements inform the sensual "carpe diem" philosophy. Just as WHAT'S GOING ON opened the floodgates for political soul music, LET'S GET IT ON defined the "lover man" genre populated by luminaries like Al Green, Barry White, and Isaac Hayes. After brilliantly surveying the social, political, and spiritual landscape with What's Going On, Marvin Gaye turned to more intimate matters with Let's Get It On, a record unparalleled in its sheer sensuality and carnal energy. Always a sexually charged performer, Gaye's passions reach their boiling point on tracks like the magnificent title hit (a number one smash) and "You Sure Love to Ball"; silky and shimmering, the music is seductive in the most literal sense, its fluid grooves so perfectly designed for romance as to border on parody. With each performance laced with innuendo, each lyric a come-on, and each rhythm throbbing with lust, perhaps no other record has ever achieved the kind of sheer erotic force of Let's Get It On, and it remains the blueprint for all of the slow jams to follow decades later -- much copied, but never imitated. [The 2003 reissue adds two single versions as bonus tracks.] ~ Jason Ankeny

"The Soulful Sound of Marvin Gaye [Sony Special Products]" (12/2005) R&B Gaye, Marvin, EMI-Capitol Special MarketsThe Soulful Sound of Marvin Gaye is essentially the same album as Adults Only, released on CBS Records in 1987, but repackaged with some substitutions. It starts unfavorably; "Sexual Healing" is finally listed with the proper songwriter's credits, but here the classic has been shortened to under four minutes in length -- 3:59 to be exact. "My Love Is Waiting," however, is full-length and hooks you with its reggae beats and rhythms. The standard "Why Did I Choose You?" has Gaye sounding like a '60s MOR artist, and while pleasant, it will probably turn off some fans. "Til Tomorrow" and "Ain't It Funny" were both written by Gaye, and each have a morbid, depressing feel about them. With the exception of a couple of jams, this is not Gaye's best work. ~ Andrew Hamilton The Soulful Sound of Marvin Gaye is essentially the same album as Adults Only, released on CBS Records in 1987, but repackaged with some substitutions. "Sexual Healing" is the only one of his hits present, with the rest of the running time filled out by desultory material like "It's Madness," "Why Did I Choose You?," and "Dream of a Lifetime." The fact that there's a Marvin Gaye compilation called Love Songs seems rather silly, especially since most of the albums he released throughout his career could have been subtitled "Love Songs." That a handful of these songs also appeared on a 1985 compilation of previously unreleased material called Romantically Yours makes the disc seem even more redundant. And then there's flat-out confusion: This disc shouldn't be confused with Motown's 2002 compilation Love Songs: Bedroom Ballads, nor should it be confused with the identically titled 1997 BMG International compilation, which is almost identical to this disc in track selection. At any rate, this Love Songs, released by Columbia/Legacy in 2003, is a Valentine's Day tie-in that includes "Turn on Some Music," "Sexual Healing," "Rockin' After Midnight," "Ain't It Funny (How Things Turn Around)," and "Happy Go Lucky." Die-hard Gaye fans have all this material, and casual fans would do better with just about any other compilation. ~ Andy Kellman

"I Heard It Through the Grapevine [Columbia River 2001]" (10/02/2001) R&B Gaye, Marvin, Columbia River Entertainment GroupThis is part of Columbia River's Legendary Rock & Roll series. With his gorgeous voice and graceful phrasing, which managed to convey both arrogance and fragile innocence by turns, coupled with his charismatic good looks, Marvin Gaye was Motown's first pure pop star. A gifted writer, as well as a competent pianist and drummer, his pop jazz masterpiece of social commentary What's Going On changed the face of pop music when it was released in 1971. This collection features live versions of some of his hits. While pleasant, it hardly qualifies as an essential purchase. ~ Steve Leggett

"Live! [Remaster]" (04/07/1998) R&B Gaye, Marvin, Motown RecordsPersonnel: Marvin Gaye (vocals); David T. Walker, Ray Parker (guitar); James Getzoff, Jack Shulman (violin); Ernie Watts (saxophone); Paul Hubinon (trumpet); George Bohanon (trombone); Joe Sample (keyboards); James Jamerson (bass); Ed Green (drums); Joe Clayton (congas); John Arnold (percussion); Eric Dolen, Charles Burns, Dwight Owens, Michael Torrance, Wally Cox (background vocals). Recorded live at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, Oakland, California on January 4, 1974. Originally released on Tamla (333). Includes liner notes by David Ritz. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Kevin Reeves (Polygram Studios, Edison, New Jersey). Includes material recorded shortly before Marvin Gaye's death, including five previously unreleased tracks. This 1974 concert documents a superb performer at the height of his popularity. The show was a rare treat for fans, since Gaye was just coming off a three-year, self-imposed period of isolation and a refusal to sing in public. The artist's reputed nervousness and fragility are nowhere in evidence, however, as he burns through superior treatments of such classics as "Trouble Man," What's Going On," "Inner City Blues," "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)," and the unsurpassable "Let's Get It On." Gaye croons with soulful intensity throughout, in a sweet and silky tenor. If the waves of female screams emanating from the audience are any indication, his voice is doing exactly what it should. A definitive version of "Distant Lover" proves a particular highlight for the excitable crowd. Gene Page's jazz-tinted orchestrations frame Gaye's performances nicely, and the band lends the proceedings an air that is equal parts raw groove and smooth sophistication. MARVIN GAYE LIVE! is an outstanding disc, showcasing one of soul and pop music's greatest voices. Of all the great singers to come out of Motown, the coolest, the suavest, the most creative (aside from Steve Wonder, that is) was Marvin Gaye. On this live album, the Sinatra of Soul lays down 11 of his finest tunes for a crowd that just couldn't be happier. From "Come Get to This" to "Distant Lover," "What's Going On" and more, Gaye lays it down with authority and sensuality. This DVD-A includes a photo gallery.

Another in a series of superb wandering groove albums from the premier sweet soul singer. He took the standard three-minute pop soul song and expanded the format. It is Gaye that is responsible for today's smooching urban R&B; he was for much of his career many years ahead of the game. This has been described as his "oral sex" album, not that the others were not; this has the erotic edge. Built around the title track, the album is a theme album and as such should be played as a whole. There are no "Too Busy Thinking Bout My Baby's" on this; it is a much more challenging but satisfying work.

"Live at the London Palladium [Remaster]" (08/24/1999) R&B Gaye, Marvin, Motown RecordsPersonnel: Marvin Gaye (vocals, keyboards); Johnny McGhee (guitar); Bugsy Wilcox (drums); Jack Ashford (tambourine); Frankie Gaye, Jan Hunter (background vocals); Florence Lyles. Recorded live at the London Palladium, London, England. Includes liner notes by Harry Weinger. The shows comprising LIVE! AT THE LONDON PALLADIUM were Marvin Gaye's first London concerts in a decade due to his fear of flying. This overseas layoff did nothing to douse Gaye's magical live presence as he performed a set of songs spanning his career. On LIVE! the debonaire singer charms the audience and peppers the early part of this set with some of his more sensual material including "Since I Had You," "Come Get To This" and "Let's Get It On." The bulk of LIVE! is divided between three medleys. The first consists of material from his solo '60s period and features "Ain't That Peculiar," "Pride And Joy" and "Hitchhike." A medley of Gaye's early-'70s, socially conscious canon quickly follows and includes ""What's Going On" and "Save The Children." The third medley finds Florence Lyles playing Kim Weston/Tammi Terrell/Diana Ross during the duets section that includes "You're All I Need To Get By" and "It Takes Two." "Got To Give It Up" (whose single version went to the top of the American pop charts) is also included due to producer Art Stewart's belief that more material was needed to round out the set.

"The Concert Anthology" (01/27/2004) R&B Gaye, Marvin, CleopatraRecorded live in 1980 & 1983. Includes liner notes by Athan Maroulis. Marvin Gaye disliked touring, and truthfully, his sweetly nuanced singing style worked best in a studio setting, where every lift and turn of his phrasing could be clearly heard. The concert stage, by contrast, required large, grand gestures from his singing, and while no one would suggest Gaye was ever anything but a solid performer, the hushed intimacy that made some of his greatest songs so magnificent was often difficult to attain on-stage. Bootlegs and cobbled-together packages of live Gaye shows have been on the market for years, often with the venue mislabeled (if it is listed at all) and overly intrusive crowd noise. This two-disc set features two well-recorded shows, one from 1980 and one from Gaye's final tour in 1983. The 1980 concert is probably from the Montreux stop on his tour of Europe that year, although some details are still sketchy. The singer sounds comfortable and assured here, and his sensual, nearly whispered version of "Come Get to This" is a powerful and seductive evocation of one of Gaye's enduring themes, the redemptive power of spiritual and physical love. The kinetic, horn-driven take on his groove classic "Got to Give It Up," however, manages to sound a good deal less immediate and spontaneous than the studio version, and feels forced. Still, Gaye is in control at this show, and it's obvious that no one in attendance was short-changed. The second disc of this set, drawn from Gaye's final American tour in 1983, finds the star sounding just a little exhausted, with decidedly less spark, which is particularly evident if you play both shows back to back. Gaye does "Come Get to This" in this set as well, and the difference three years makes is apparent. While still a moving performance, the hushed, tense urgency of the 1980 version seems replaced here by a tentative apprehension, as if what Gaye was saying in 1980 (come here, I'll save you) had been flipped to its opposite (come here, save me). The highlight of the 1983 show is the ten-minute "Sexual Healing," one of Marvin Gaye's greatest songs, and a clear statement of his major theme, the use of love, lust, and sex to reach out to God. Within a year Marvin Gaye would be gone, shot to death by his father. ~ Steve Leggett

"The Marvin Gaye Collection [2003]" (09/28/2004) R&B Gaye, Marvin, Motown RecordsThis is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. Personnel: Marvin Gaye (vocals, drums); Dennis Coffey, Eddie Willis, Melvin "Wah Wah" Ragin, Joe Messina, Robert White (guitar); Larry Nozero, Teddy Buckner (saxophone); Marcus Belgrave (trumpet); Bob Babbitt, James Jamerson (bass instrument); Andrew Smith, Benny Benjamin, Richard "Pistol" Allen, Uriel Jones (drums); Eddie "Bongo" Brown, Jack Ashford (percussion). If James Brown is indeed the Godfather of Soul, then Marvin Gaye is surely soul music's counterpart to Ol' Blue Eyes, Frank Sinatra. (Gaye in fact began his career singing Sinatra/Nat Cole-type standards.) Like Sinatra, Gaye could inhabit a song, make it his own, and transform ballads into preludes to seduction ("Your Precious Love," "Let's Get It On"). Unlike Sinatra, Gaye wrote many (very fine, classic R&B) songs and could get very funky ("Trouble Man"). COLLECTION is a nice primer to Gaye's biggest hits (including some duets with Tammi Terrell), and is sure to make you crave more.

Liner Note Author: Ben Edmonds.

"Here, My Dear/In Our Lifetime [Remaster]" (02/26/2001) R&B Gaye, Marvin, Universal DistributionThis two-fer CD gathers two late-1970s albums by Marvin Gaye, HERE MY DEAR and IN OUR LIFETIME. Near the end of his tenure at Motown, Marvin Gaye's career was taking a plummeting nose dive compared to the peaks of such classics as What's Going On, I Want You and Let's Get It On being three of the decade's biggest selling albums for the then-L.A. based label. This two-fer takes his last two recordings for the label and puts them together for a single release. 1978's brutal confessional concept album Here, My Dear essentially narrates the story of his troubled and highly tumultuous marriage to Anna Gordy, and spawned two excellent hits in "A Funky Space Reincarnation" and "When Did You Stop Loving Me, When Did I Stop Loving You?." 1981's In Our Lifetime keeps the confessionals going, exposing the two halves of Gaye in the spotlight: the devout, highly spiritual son of a preacher man and the romantic hedonist who charmed a generation of women out of their stockings. ~ Rob Theakston

Marvin Gaye changed all this by releasing a concept album that went beyond the usual boy-meets-girl scenario, weaving together an aural collage of societa

"Motown Legends: Mercy Mercy Me [Collectables]" (03/14/2006) R&B Gaye, Marvin, Collectables RecordsThough by no means a comprehensive collection, this 11-track MOTOWN LEGENDS disc assembles a handful of Marvin Gaye's best tracks. Interestingly, compiler Cary E. Mansfield has shuffled the chronological sequence, so the listener is treated to a zigzagging overview of Gaye's stylistic experiments at the famed label. The set kicks off with the politically minded, early-1970s groove of "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" from WHAT'S GOING ON, then backpedals to the pop-oriented, early-'60s R&B of "No Time for Tears." Gaye the popster and Gaye the socially astute soul revolutionary are juxtaposed throughout, and represented by such cuts as the doo-wop-inflected "There Goes My Baby" and the smooth, funky "Ego Tripping Out," respectively. Two bonus tracks close out the set--"Trouble Man," one of Gaye's best early-'70s songs, and his energetic version of the Norman Whitfield masterpiece "Cloud Nine" (which became a sizable hit for the Temptations). This compilation, while not an ideal starting point for Gaye fans, is still a thoroughly enjoyable set.
