"Billboard Top Hits: 1988" (04/19/1994) R&B Various Artists, Rhino Records (USA)If there's anything the Billboard Top Hits compilations documenting 1985 through 1989 indicate, it's that the period covered wasn't exactly pop music's most glorious era. Not only was there a lot of rock music being made that aged almost instantly; the mainstream had yet to fully embrace rap music, and a lot of the production qualities infiltrating nearly every genre of music -- the overbearing use of mid-range and the blazing guitar solos, for two -- haven't aged well at all. Still, these cheap and concise compilations function as accurate scrapbooks of the years being covered, and they're especially fascinating for pop fans who like to keep tabs on trends, changes, and developments. The 1988 installment of Billboard Top Hits is an improvement over the three that immediately predate it for the simple fact that Starship have finally let go of its grip. Although there are some almost universally detested singles such as Richard Marx's "Hold on to the Nights," the Escape Club's "Wild Wild West," Will to Power's "Baby, I Love Your Way/Freebird Medley (Freebaby)," and Johnny Hates Jazz's "Shattered Dreams," there are a couple bright spots, including Expos?'s "Seasons Change" (one of the best pop ballads of the '80s -- look it up) and Terence Trent D'Arby's "Wishing Well." And then there's Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry Be Happy," which either makes people happy or just the opposite. ~ Andy Kellman

"Billboard Top Hits: 1981" (10/13/1992) R&B Various Artists, Rhino Records (USA)As this volume of Billboard's continuing series illustrates, Billboard Top Hits: 1981 covers a year of considerable flux in pop radio -- where hits like Kool & the Gang's "Celebration" rode in on the last remaining fumes of the disco era, Dolly Parton's "9 to 5" and Juice Newton's "Queen of Hearts" heralded country's increasing encroachment into the mainstream; even reggae found a place on the charts thanks to Blondie's classic cover of "The Tide Is High." Other notable hits: Kim Carnes' "Bette Davis Eyes," Rick Springfield's "Jessie's Girl" and Olivia Newton-John's "Physical." ~ Chuck Donkers

"Billboard Top Hits: 1977" (04/23/1991) R&B Various Artists, Rhino Records (USA)Billboard Hits: 1977 presents the year's top ten singles, a good portion of which are disco and soul classics like Heatwave's "Boogie Nights," KC & the Sunshine Band's "I'm Your Boogie Man," Rose Royce's "Car Wash," Thelma Houston's "Don't Leave Me This Way," and Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give It Up." Meanwhile, Hall & Oates' "Rich Girl," Peter Frampton's "I'm in You," Climax Blues Band's "Couldn't Get It Right," and Alan O'Day's "Undercover Angel" represent 1977's favorite pop hits. Overall, Billboard Hits: 1977 is an enjoyable collection that splits the difference between disco and soft rock, two of the era's biggest musical crazes. ~ Heather Phares

"Billboard Top Rock & Roll Hits: 1973" (01/24/1989) R&B Various Artists, Rhino Records (USA)Looking at this set culled from 1973's Billboard charts, the music of the 1960s seems not to have existed. Included are no less than two Elton John songs, the bombastic album rock of Edgar Winter's fabulous "Frankenstein," and flinty R&B from Marvin Gaye and Billy Preston that didn't dance around its subject matter or drown it with innuendo. There was even a bit of Southern rock and troubadour folk from the Allman Brothers Band and Jim Croce. ~ Johnny Loftus

"Billboard Top Rock & Roll Hits: 1974" (09/26/1989) R&B Various Artists, Rhino Records (USA)This set draws from charting hits in 1974 and illustrates just how much parts of the '70s suffered musically. "Bennie and the Jets" was never Elton John's finest moment, and David Essex's "Rock On" was likely already a retro novelty when it peaked in March. Elsewhere, Billy Preston injects some soul with "Nothing from Nothing" and some eventual classic rock radio gems were born with "Sweet Home Alabama," "The Joker," and "The Loco-Motion." I think it's time for a Block Party Weekend. ~ Johnny Loftus

"Billboard Top Hits: 1980" (10/13/1992) R&B Various Artists, Rhino Records (USA)When Rhino's Billboard Top Hits series hit the 1980s, the collection began to lose a little steam. From 1980 through 1985, the discs are representative of the pop mainstream, although there were the usual major artists missing. Still, the discs contained plenty of one-hit wonders and classic singles like "Bette Davis Eyes," "Jessie's Girl," "Down Under," "Maneater," and "Centerfold," with the highest concentration of good singles on the 1983 volume. As the series approached the end of the decade, the problem of licensing reared its ugly head; not only were major artists like Madonna, Prince, Phil Collins, and Guns N' Roses unavailable, but smaller artists like Rick Astley, Roxette, Poison, and Michael Damian also don't appear. Although there are a couple of enjoyable period pieces, like Donny Osmond's "Soldier of Love," the bulk of the tracks can't cover the absence of "Never Gonna Give You Up," "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," and "The Look." Perhaps these should have waited a couple of years. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"Billboard Top Hits: 1975-1979 [Box]" (07/04/1995) R&B Various Artists, Rhino Records (USA)Recording information: 1975-1979. Grooving its way out of your hi-fi like a late night television ad with a mind of its own comes Billboard Top Hits: 1975-1979. A generous of mix of R&B and AM pop-charting singles, the set boasts three Elton John songs, two tracks from KC & the Sunshine Band, the aching disco of Thelma Houston's "Don't Leave Me This Way," a few forgotten nuggets, and, of course, "Y.M.C.A." Because of their adherence to each year's charts, the five discs do have some continuity issues. But it's almost more fun that way. One second you're getting your groove on to Heatwave's "Boogie Nights," the next, you're screwing your face up to sing like Leo Sayer in "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing"." Rhino's Have a Nice Day and Disco Years series are more detailed in both hits and rarities. However, Billboard Top Hits benefits from its own brevity, and is as easy to enjoy than an old episode of Happy Days. ~ Johnny Loftus

"Billboard Top Dance Hits: 1976" (02/25/1992) R&B Various Artists, Rhino Records (USA)The year is 1976 and disco is enjoying its first year of a late-'70s run on the charts. Better collections of the sparkly stuff have certainly been released, but this roundup should be just fine for fans needing a bit of a year-by-year tour of the period. Only 12 tracks are on hand, but the selection is still impressive, with two mammoth classics by Diana Ross ("Love Hangover") and the Andrea True Connection ("More, More, More, Pt. 1"). And while more usual suspects like the Bee Gees, Thelma Houston, and Donna Summer are on hand, there's still room for some left-field hustle compliments of the Mighty Clouds of Joy and the Originals. A short but potent taste of disco's nascent prime. ~ Stephen Cook
