"The Emancipation Of Mimi: Platinum Edition" (11/15/2005) R&B Carey, Mariah, MonarC/IslandPersonnel: Mariah Carey (vocals); Trey Lorenz (vocals); Nelly, Snoop Dogg, Twista (rap vocals); Chops Horns (horns); James Wright (keyboards); Randy Jackson (bass instrument); Charles Drayton (drums); Fatman Scoop, Jermaine Dupri, Johnta Austin (background vocals). Recording information: Right Track Studios, New York, New York; South Side Studios, Atlanta, GA; Honeywest, New York, NY. With the lofty title THE EMANCIPATION OF MIMI, it's clear that Mariah Carey wants listeners to know she's releasing an important record. Here she aims to reveal an aspect of herself that has previously been held back by career missteps and tabloid-worthy drama. It's refreshing, then, that 2005's EMANCIPATION returns the focus to Carey's remarkable voice, as the singer makes her most accomplished record in over a decade. Carey opens the album by exhibiting some of the most sincerely soulful vocals of her career on the one-two punch of the up-tempo "It's Like That" and the beautiful ballad "We Belong Together." Her able voice expertly complements both the hazy hip-hop of Snoop Dogg on "Say Somethin'" and the acrobatics of Twista on the dream-like "One and Only." In her early years, Carey would have adorned the latter track with vocal tricks to show off her five-octave voice, but she has wisely learned to rein in her frills. In fact, restraint is the key word on THE EMANCIPATION OF MIMI, a straightforward and satisfying pop-R&B collection.

"Chicago 85: The Movie" (11/21/2000) R&B Hollister, Dave, Dreamworks SKGPersonnel includes: Dave Hollister (vocals); Tank, Steve Huff, Walter (Lil Walt) Milsap III, Chucky Thompson (various instruments); Bob Robinson (acoustic guitar, piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Hammond B-3 organ, keyboards); Overdose, Joey Williams (guitar); Keith Pelzer (piano); Tim Kelley (keyboards, electric bass, drums, percussion, programming); Eugene Peoples (keyboards, bass, programming, background vocals); Dalvin DeGrate (drums); Guru Keaton (programming); Prathan Williams, Candice Nelson, Daniel Johnson, Ryan Toby, K-Ci Haley (background vocals). Engineers incluede: Bill Malina, Jesse "Bizz" Stewart, Andy Haller. Dave Hollister's R&B opus CHICAGO '85 presents itself as something of a concept album. The songs are listed as sections of a movie screenplay, each one occurring on a different day over the course of the "film." Whether one chooses to follow the admittedly slim thematic thread between the songs, or simply to enjoy the album as an impressive batch of individual songs, there's no denying Hollister's vocal skills and the effectiveness of the arrangements. While the production and vocal performances nod to hip-hop, Hollister bears a soulfulness that links him to previous generations of R&B singers. One listen to his impassioned testifying at the close of "Take Care of Home," for example, will leave no doubts both to the level of his emotional commitment to the material and his ability to successfully communicate these emotions.

"Honey" (04/30/2002) R&B Ohio Players, DTS EntertainmentPersonnel: Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner (vocals, guitar, harmonica, percussion), Claren "Satch" Satchell (vocals, saxophone, flute), Ralph "Pee-Wee" Middlebrooks (trumpet), Marvin Pierce (trumpet, trombone, percussion), Billy Beck (keyboards, vocals), Marshall Jones (bass), Jimmy "Diamond" Williams (vocals, drums, percussions). Recorded and mixed at Paragon Recording Studios, Chicago. This is a DTS CD, which features DTS 5.1 Surround Sound technology and is playable on a DTS-capable 5.1 Surround Sound system. Personnel: Leroy "Sugar" Bonner (vocals, guitar, harmonica, percussion); Claren "Satch" Satchell (vocals, saxophone, flute); Jimmy "Diamond" Williams (vocals, drums, percussion); Marvin Pierce (trumpet, trombone, percussion); Ralph "Pee-Wee" Middlebrooks (trumpet); Billy Beck (keyboards); Marshall Jones (bass). Recorded at Paragon Recording Studios, Chicago, Illinois. This is a DTS CD, which features DTS 5.1 Surround Sound technology and is playable on a DTS-capable 5.1 sound system. The follow-up to FIRE, the band's breakthrough smash, HONEY continued the Ohio Players' golden streak by building on the elements that made FIRE such a hit: smooth soul balladry, churning funk, and plenty of freaky, outrageous attitude (due in large part to the cartoonish lead vocals of Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner). Slow songs and balladry seem to play a larger part here, as the lush leadoff title track and the carpe diem anthem "Let's Do It" indicate. "Alone" strikes an unusually somber note for the Players in its sincerity, a mood marked by the song's comparatively spare arrangements. But the Players thrive on pulse-quickening jams, too, and "Ain't Givin' Up No Ground," with its jittery pop-and-lock rhythms, and the stomping groove of "Fopp" rank with the band's best sweaty workouts. Of course, the irrepressible "Love Rollercoaster" may be HONEY's highlight. (Its instantly memorable three-chord riff and vocal hook have been sampled endlessly in the decades since.) Add to all this some rather explicit and provocative cover art (the photo, of a naked female model covered in honey, was the band's most controversial), and you've got another feisty, fun slab of classic funk.

"The Essential Jacksons" (03/09/2004) R&B Jacksons (The), Legacy RecordingsThe Jacksons: Michael Jackson, Randy Jackson, Tito Jackson, Marlon Jackson, Jackie Jackson. Additional personnel includes: Mick Jagger (vocals); Teddy Riley (various instruments); Paul Jackson Jr. (guitar); Dexter Wansel (piano, keyboards); Paulinho Da Costa (percussion); Babyface (programming); MFSB. Producers include: Kenneth Gamble, Leon Huff, The Jacksons, Teddy Riley, Babyface, Compilation producer: Leo Sacks. Recorded between 1976 & 1989. Includes liner notes by Jermaine Jackson. This is part of "The Essential" series. In the legal battles that followed the Jackson 5's departure from Motown for Epic Records in 1976, the Jackson brothers lost the rights to their band name, and were known thereafter as the Jacksons. THE ESSENTIAL JACKSONS compiles the group's biggest hits from their tenure at Epic. Listeners should be forewarned that this compilation does not include material recorded under the name Jackson 5; so fans looking for "I Want You Back" and "I'll Be There" should seek out an earlier hits compilation. That said, this is an excellent sampler of the group's later incarnation, when their music, more heavily influenced by funk and disco, was polished to a high, danceable sheen. Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff wrote and produced the group's first Epic records, and many tunes, especially the string-sweetened "Show You the Way to Go," reflect a classic Philly soul sound. By 1978's DESTINY, however, the Jacksons were writing and producing their own material, and the infectious singles that resulted ("Blame It on the Boogie" and "Shake Your Body," in particular) are fantastic. The set closes with a live rendition of the Jacksons doing "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" (from Michael's OFF THE WALL).

"Ain't Nobody Worrying" (12/13/2005) R&B Hamilton, Anthony, So So Def RecordingsRecording information: 2005. After the success of his 2003 album, COMIN' FROM WHERE I'M FROM, R&B/soul singer Anthony Hamilton followed up in earnest during 2005, first with a collection of previously unreleased tunes, SOULIFE, and then with another new studio record, AIN'T NOBODY WORRYIN'. This latter disc truly solidifies Hamilton's sterling reputation; it's an utterly confident outing that nods to 1970s soul music without being beholden to the style of that era. In fact, Hamilton's deft balancing of both vintage soul and contemporary production is what helps the expressive vocalist stand out in the crowd. Rather than calling up his R&B/rap peers for guest shots, Hamilton largely goes in alone on this solid record, allowing superstar producer Mark Batson and others to create organic backdrops that perfectly showcase his undeniable talent.

"Ain't That Good News" (06/17/2003) R&B Cooke, Sam, ABKCO RecordsThis is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. Personnel includes: Sam Cooke (vocals); Rene Hall, Joseph Hooven (arranger, conductor); The Soul Stirrers. Recorded at RCA Studio, Hollywood, California in 1964-65. This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. This album, which was sadly to be Sam Cooke's last, found him exercising a hard-won creative freedom to fine effect. You can hear it most clearly in the moving, socially relevant ballad "A Change Is Gonna Come." But it doesn't stop there. Cooke dips into the well of country music for a version of the classic "Tennessee Waltz" that is startling in its transformative ability, as he accomplishes a feat that no one but Ray Charles himself was capable of at the time--turning country seamlessly into soul. The lighthearted "Another Saturday Night" paints a detailed portrait of loneliness that's fully charged with humor rather than desperation, showing how Cooke could straddle several emotions at once within the same song. AIN'T THAT GOOD NEWS is the sound of a man at the peak of his powers, flexing all of his musical muscles. It's just a shame that this was to be the soul legend's swan song.

"Confessions: Special Edition" (10/05/2004) R&B Usher, LaFace (USA)This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Usher (vocals); Ludacris, Lil Jon (rap vocals); Thicke, Rich Harrison (various instruments); Bobby Ross Avila (guitar, piano, Wurlitzer piano, keyboards, Moog synthesizer, programming, vinyl scratches); Daniel Marino (guitar); James Wright (Wurlitzer piano, bass); Jimmy Jam (Fender Rhodes piano); Larry Cox, L-Roc (keyboards); LaMarquis Jefferson (bass); IZ (drums, percussion, vinyl scratches); Sean Garrett, Darcy Aldridge, Paula Patton (background vocals). Producers include: Just Blaze, Valdez Brantley, Jonathan "Lil Jon" Smith, Usher raymond, James Lackey. Personnel include: Usher (vocals); Alicia Keys (vocals); Kanye West, Lil Jon, Ludacris, Shyne, Twista (rap vocals); IZ (drums, percussion). Recording information: Lacococo, Alpharetta, GA; Circle House, Miami, Florida; The Village Recorder, Los Angeles, California. Usher has been a symbol of tender sexuality ever since he shifted from teenage sensation to soulful superstar. He's breathtakingly good at what he does; possessing that undefinable essence known to a select few soul crooners (Al Green, D'Angelo, etc.) who radiate sensuality through song, Usher has reached an apex on the sultry CONFESSIONS, his fifth studio album. After the obligatory intro, Lil Jon kicks in with his exhortations on the catchy, dance-floor-ready single "Yeah." Usher follows that up with the sublimely sweet "Throwback," a torch song with a fantastic Motown hook. On "Confessions Part II," he exposes his most vulnerable side when admitting to his lover that he's fathered a child with another woman. Exemplifying his versatility, Usher follows the standard pop ballad "Simple Things" with the guitar-riff-driven "Bad Girl," somewhere between 1970s funk and '80s Prince. CONFESSIONS is the sound of an R&B luminary at the top of his game.
