"Tha Carter 2 (Chopped & Screwed) [PA]" (03/07/2006) R&B Lil Wayne, Universal DistributionAvailable only through select retailers A one-time member of New Orleans's Hot Boys, rapper Lil Wayne attained a new level of confidence and skill on 2004's THA CARTER. That album featured only a few guest shots (as opposed to typically star-studded hip-hop records), and this 2005 sequel once again keeps things focused on Wayne, with the MC flying solo on almost every track. This uncluttered scenario, which relies on a spare, yet distinctly Cash Money-style musical backdrop, gives Wayne the freedom to let his laid-back rhymes stretch out, as best revealed on the ominous "Fireman" and the boastful "Best Rapper Alive." Clearly Wayne knows how to work a winning concept, since THA CARTER II stays true to both its predecessor and the relentless, unapologetic spirit of Southern rap. Although his first studio album in three years has been long-awaited and repeatedly delayed, Lil Wayne has been anything but absent. Since THA CARTER II, Weezy has left an impressive mass of recordings--from mixtapes (authorized and otherwise) to guest appearances--in his wake as he blusters through the rap industry. In the third installment of the THA CARTER series, Wayne shows he's earned the right to ego-trip as he lets his off-kilter flow, freak-out lyrics, and vocal acrobatics run wild over 16 tracks. Scaling the heights of hubris on "Dr. Carter," he plays an MC/doctor treating a certain music genre diagnosed as lifeless and closes with a quintessential Weezy snarl: "Welcome back hip-hop/I saved your life." Wayne then shifts to alien-mode for the E.T.-inspired "Phone Home." Later on, he details his sexual conquest of a female cop on "Ms. Officer." As expected, THA CARTER III is rife with big name producers (The Alchemist, Kanye West, Wyclef Jean, David Banner, Swizz Beatz, will.i.am) and guest artists (Jay-Z, Babyface, Busta Rhymes, Juelz Santana, Fabolous, T-Pain) from all coasts.

"Jive Records Presents: UGK Chopped and Screwed [PA]" (12/07/2004) R&B UGK, Jive Records (USA)UGK: Pimp C, Bun B (rap vocals). Additional personnel: Kool Ace, Too $hort (rap vocals). Editor: DJ 007. Photographer: Keith Bardin. Unknown Contributor Role: DJ 007. DJ 007 from the well-revered Chop Shop crew handles the chopping and screwing on this hallucinatory collection of UGK's best. He uses an old Chop Shop trick to great effect on the collection: start things off mildly and get a little freakier with each progressive track. By the time "Take It Off" comes on, tempos are crawling, making the already low bass of the original tracks shake the foundations. The poppy party track "Belts to Match" gets a wicked turntable scratch treatment, while the low rumble of "Pimpin' Ain't No Illusion" will surely wake the neighbors. That a Chop Shop-affiliated release would be this good is no surprise to the screwed and chopped faithful, but that such a mindbender is released by Jive -- the home of Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys -- is downright shocking. ~ David Jeffries

"Greatest Hits (Chopped & Screwed) [PA]" (11/15/2005) Heavy Metal Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Ruthless RecordsPersonnel: Bone Thugs-N-Harmony; Mariah Carey, Phil Collins (vocals); Eazy-E, Felecia, 2Pac, 3LW, Krayzie Bone, Avant, The Notorious B.I.G., Big Chan. DJ: DJ Michael "5000" Watts . The Cleveland, Ohio collective Bone Thugs-N-Harmony began as Eazy-E proteges and early signees to his Ruthless Records. For a brief time, the five-member rap trio eclipsed the always-controversial Eazy, scoring huge crossover hits with its knack for intricate harmonies and a blend of smooth R&B and gospel with a hard-edged street attitude. The group's supreme asset was its five distinctive voices and its unique ability to interweave them into a complex mosaic. Ranging from heartfelt to off-kilter, from rapid-fire to contemplative, Bone Thugs' skills culminated in the surreal single "Tha Crossroads," which spent two months in 1996 atop the pop charts. That seminal hit and over 20 more songs culled from its decade-plus of existence grace Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's two-disc GREATEST HITS, an overflowing collection of the unit's finest tracks. Present are the most memorable moments--the tenacious anthem "Thuggish Ruggish Bone" and the ghostly "1st of tha Month"--alongside such lesser known, but strong tunes as "Thug Mentality" and "Ecstasy." Also on GREATEST HITS is the unlikely, but successful collaboration with Phil Collins, "Home." GREATEST HITS captures the soul of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's restless spirit.

"Untold Story, Vol. 2 [Chopped and Screwed] [PA]" (10/18/2005) R&B Game (The), Fast Life Music, Inc.Personnel: Get Low Playaz, JT the Bigga Figga, San Quinn, Sean T, Telly Mac, Young Noble, Blue Chip. California rapper the Game had been lighting up the mix-tape circuit for years before catching the eyes and ears of Aftermath Records. The Game's lyrics are about as hard as they come, and no one could dare question the sincerity of his rhymes. The young MC turned to lyrics after he was shot and coming out of a coma. The former hustler's brutal, precise rhymes captured the attention of many, including impresario JT the Bigga Figga, who signed up to produce the Game's debut. (This record is riddled with controversy, as the Game and JT had a falling out.) Despite this conflict, UNTOLD STORY certainly conveys the Game's full hip-hop prowess, which stirred up such excitement in the West Coast rap scene. The Game's confidence is overwhelming, as he declares himself the best rapper since 2Pac's demise and drops almost every name in hip-hop from Nas to NWA. Fortunately, his rhymes back up his swagger; his style is not complex or ornate, but, like 2Pac, he gets his point across concisely and unquestionably. UNTOLD STORY provides a peek inside the mind of an up-and-coming rapper and stands on its own as a well-rounded record. Before he signed with Aftermath, shipped platinum, and fell out with the same label in the midst of a major public feud with 50 Cent, Compton MC The Game was taken under the wing of rapper/producer JT Tha Bigga Figga. During the pair's time together, the latter collected rolls of tapes of The Game's early work and compiled it here, giving fans extraordinary insight into the evolution of the lyrically potent rap star. UNTOLD STORY VOLUME II is saved from being a knock-off by the fact that JT is a remarkable producer, and that The Game's capacity for sharp rhymes is seemingly endless. The Game can turn a phrase with the best of them (i.e. "I move more birds than migration"), but his strongest suit is his informed connection to the history of hip-hop and R&B. On "I'm A Mobsta," he channels Rakim's measured confidence while reminiscing about listening to Bobby Womack and pointing to the corner where Eazy-E dealt drugs. He invokes the EPMD model for rap success with "Business Never Personal," while displaying a KRS-One tongue-rolling style on "Born & Raised In Compton (Raised As A G)." UNTOLD STORY: VOLUME II reveals yet more dimensions of one of the the sharpest minds in the rap world.

"United State Of Atlanta (Chopped & Screwed) [PA]" (08/09/2005) R&B Ying Yang Twins, TVT Records (Dist.)Personnel: Ying Yang Twins; Da Muzicianz, Free, Jacki-O , Adam Levine, Lil Jon, Lil Scrappy, Mike Jones , Missy Elliott, Pitbull, Anthony Hamilton, Avant, B.G., Three 6 Mafia, Teedra Moses, Homebwoi, Countrie Biggz, Anwar, Bun B, Busta Rhymes. Audio Remixer: Michael Watts. Photographer: Michael Blackwell. Like Outkast, the Ying Yang Twins are progenitors of southern hip-hop that's a mix of gangsta rap, party jams, and jittery beats, and on UNITED STATE OF ATLANTA the Ying Yang Twins approach the game like a house party thrown in a recording studio. For starters, the wide variety of guests popping up throughout this 70-minute-plus project adds a feeling of randomness, recklessness, and fun. Neo-soul crooner Anthony Hamilton provides some honeyed vocals on the gospel-flavored "Long Time," and Maroon 5's Adam Levine holds his own on the electro-funk of "Live Again," with its nod to the travails of exotic dancers. There's also plenty of support from Dirty South brethren such as Mike Jones & Mr. Collipark (on "Badd"), and tough gal Jacki-O (on the DMX-flavored "Hoes"). The interspersed skits comment on a range of topics: "We at War" touches on the seriousness of America's foreign policy, while things get quite a bit raunchier on bits like "Sex Therapy 101," "102" and "103."

"Most Known Unknown [Screwed and Chopped] [PA]" (09/27/2005) R&B Three 6 Mafia, Hypnotize MindsPersonnel: Three 6 Mafia (rap vocals); Chrome, DJ Kayslay, 8Ball, Frayser Boy, Grandaddy Souf, Lil Wyte, MJG, Paul Wall , Project Pat, Remy Martin, Young Buck, Lil' Flip, Boogie Mane (rap vocals); DJ Paul , Juicy J, Kurt Clayton, Carlos "6 July" Broady (programming). Audio Mixers: DJ Paul ; Mike Foster; Juicy J. Audio Remixer: DJ Michael "5000" Watts . Memphis's Three 6 Mafia had been slugging it out for over a decade and a half before they really hit the mainstream consciousness with their exhilarating performance at the 2006 Academy Awards. 2005's MOST KNOWN HITS is an appropriate introduction to the group led by Juicy J and DJ Paul. The album features album highlights dating back to 1997 and their album CHAPTER 2: WORLD DOMINATION, generally considered their breakthrough-it was certainly the first that made them a name outside of regional radio. Three 6's songs do tend to begin sounding the same: Simple 808 beats under mostly sparse synths, as the rappers boast about bitches and weed, while threatening their detractors. This type of hip-hop is made for parties, and thus the greatest-hits package finds hits like "Sippin' on Some Syrup" and "Hit a Muthafucka" better served than on their respective albums where they might get lost amid the filler. MOST KNOWN UNKNOWN, Three 6 Mafia's second 2005 release, perfectly sums up the Memphis rap outfit's position in the hip-hop universe. The collective flies remarkably under the radar for a band who bounced hard & grimy rhymes off each other long before the South became nationally known as dirty, but their influence spans far and wide in Southern rap thanks to their release of consistently arresting records. MOST KNOWN UNKNOWN finds the rhymes racing at a hypnotically frenzied pace from Young Buck-toting "Stay Fly" to the sinister, crawling "Half On A Sack." As with practically every successive Three 6 Mafia album, Most Known Unknown is more of the same, executed a little bit better than before. That means a parade of first-rate productions by Juicy J and DJ Paul, the group's primary members, and plenty of street-level rhymes of the most hardcore variety. "Stay Fly" stands out -- not only amid the rest of the album, but amid the entire Three 6 catalog -- with its propulsive intensity and crafty hook. Juicy and Paul sample an old Willie Hutch song here, and the result is striking. Sure, Three 6 has always had a knack for roof-raisers like this, going back to similarly styled anthems like "Tear da Club Up" and "Hit a Muthafucka," but none have had such crossover potential. Features by Eightball, MJG, and Young Buck -- who are also from Memphis -- make the song even more dizzying, as the verses come quickly and hit hard. Nothing else on Most Known Unknown comes close to matching the excellence of "Stay Fly," unfortunately, though there are plenty of good songs here. "Swervin'" and "When I Pull Up at the Club" are two such instances, while "Side 2 Side" shows off Juicy and Paul's ability to import concurrent trends, in this case the "we-don't-dance dance" of Terror Squad's "Lean Back." And of course, you'll find all kinds of gratuitous profanity, sex talk, and drug references, along with over-the-top showboating aggression -- everything that has come to be expected from Three 6. Clocking in at 20-plus songs in roughly 80 minutes Most Known Unknown is indeed more of the same, plus a little extra quality, so if you're a fan, you won't be disappointed. On the other hand, if you're new to the group, likely introduced to them via "Stay Fly," you should expect over-the-top hardcore Southern rap. The beats are all done in-house and are the main draw. The rapping is not bad, though what the guys lack in technique and invention, they compensate for with lyrical excess. Three 6 Mafia is the hardcore of the hardcore, and not for the faint of heart. [Columbia released a screwed and chopped edition, which had become par for the course for Southern rap releases by the mid-2000s.] ~ Jason Birchmeier
