"Spirit [Remaster]" (04/10/2001) R&B Earth, Wind & Fire, Legacy RecordingsAlso available in a 3-pack with THAT'S THE WAY OF THE WORLD and ALL IN ALL. Earth, Wind & Fire: Maurice White, Philip Bailey (vocals, percussion); Al McKay, Johnny Graham (guitar); Andrew Woolfolk (tenor saxophone); Larry Dunn (keybaords); Verdine White (bass); Fred White, Ralph Johnson (percussion). All tracks have been digitally remastered. The follow-up to the band's breakthrough album THAT'S THE WAY OF THE WORLD, 1976's SPIRIT builds on Earth, Wind & Fire's signature blend of funk, jazz, and smooth soul. An ambitious record, SPIRIT successfully captures what Earth, Wind & Fire were all about--the melding of a wide range of musical styles with a positive and self-aware philosophy. Though the band had experienced difficulties when producer and arranger Charles Stepney died halfway through the sessions for SPIRIT, the progressive funk workout "Getaway" (one of the album's highlights) was a runaway R&B hit. High tenor vocalist Philip Bailey is featured on the romantic ballad "Imagination" and on the shimmering title track. "Saturday Nite" brings things back down to street level with its solid funk grooves, while "Biyo," an instrumental with a jazz-like structure, gives the group's musicians plenty of room to stretch out. The gospel-inspired "Burnin' Bush," which showcases the group's renowned vocal leads and harmonies, rounds out this fine release. (Note: The 2001 edition of SPIRIT features five bonus tracks.)

"All 'N All [Remaster]" (07/27/1999) R&B Earth, Wind & Fire, Legacy RecordingsAlso available in a 3-pack with THAT'S THE WAY OF THE WORLD and SPIRIT. Earth, Wind & Fire: Maurice White (vocals, kalimba, drums); Verdine White (vocals, bass, percussion); Philip Bailey (vocals, congas, percussion); Al McKay (guitar, percussion); Johnny Graham (guitar); Andrew Woolfolk (flute, soprano & tenor saxophone); Larry Dunn (piano, organ, synthesizer); Ralph Johnson, Fred White (drums, percussion). Producer: Maurice White. Reissue producer: Leo Sacks. Includes liner notes by Ron Wynn. Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). Originally released in 1977, ALL IN ALL shows Earth, Wind & Fire breaking out of their previous funk/R&B mold and incorporating touches of world music to their sound. The result is a landmark album that sounds just as fresh more than 20 years later. A visit to Argentina and Brazil helped Maurice White and the gang inject some new influences into the recording of ALL IN ALL. Opener "Serpentine Fire" is highlighted by Maurice's Latin percussion arrangement. "Fantasy," which features Philip Bailey's soaring vocals, is simply one of the great funk songs of the era. "Jupiter" features a tight, blasting horn section. "I'll Write a Song for You" is a smooth ballad with tender harmonies and strings. The album concludes with a live version of "Brazilian Rhyme," one of three bonus tracks included on this reissue. If you're only familiar with Earth, Wind & Fire's radio hits, pick up ALL IN ALL. The harmonies, grooves and top-notch production will make you a believer.

"The Promise" (05/20/2003) R&B Earth, Wind & Fire, Kalimba Records (USA)Earth, Wind & Fire: Maurice White (vocals, malimba); Philip Bailey (vocals); Verdine White (bass); Ralph Johnson (percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel includes: Eric Walls (guitar); Preston Glass (keyboards, programming); Gary Bias (saxophone); Ray Brown (trumpet); Reggie Young, George Bohanon (trombone); Danny Reyes (percussion); Gregory Curtis (programming, background vocals); Wanda Vaughn, Sheila Hutchinson (background vocals). Recorded at Magnet Vision Studios, Santa Monica, California. "Hold Me" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance. Earth Wind & Fire's umpteenth album since the band's first incarnation in Chicago at the dawn of the '70s may lack its founding member--Maurice White retired from active duty in 1996 suffering from Parkinson's disease--but all the familiar elements are otherwise in place, notably Philip Bailey's extraordinary vocal range and a plethora of horn-driven arrangements. If the tempos have slowed down a little with time, the songwriting and musicianship remain in full effect, particularly on such smooch-worthy cuts as "Hold Me" and "Wonderland," the latter in particular featuring an irresistible chorus interwoven with the band's trademark sinuous horn lines. THE PROMISE is the softer side of EW&F, but softer in this case isn't shorthand for dull--the rhythms sway, Bailey's voice is still in improbably magnificent form, and the music still sounds as effortless as it always did. THE PROMISE delivers the whole Earth, Wind & Fire package in its glorious, theatrical entirety.

"Illumination" (09/20/2005) R&B Earth, Wind & Fire, Sanctuary UrbanEarth, Wind & Fire: Philip Bailey (vocals, background vocals); Keith Harris (keyboards, drums); Verdine White (bass instrument, kalimba); Maurice White (percussion). Personnel: Will.I.Am (programming). With the Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney releasing fresh and vital albums in 2005, it comes as no surprise that Earth, Wind & Fire are still going strong as well. But rather than simply hearkening back to their classic formula, EWF update their sound to keep pace with contemporary R&B and hip-hop, opting for a sharp, polished production that fits right in on urban radio, while still staying true to the pan-global grooves and complex, technically advanced playing on which the group built its reputation. A host of guest stars--nearly all of whom are from an up-and-coming generation of soul--appear here. Black Eyed Peas' Will. I. Am. co-writes and performs on the opener "Lovely People," while Outkast's Big Boi steps up to the mic on "This Is How I Feel." The sensual crooner Brian McKnight lends his pipes to the ballad "To You," and even Kenny G. puts in an appearance on a saxophone-based instrumental. Beneath all this is the classic EWF vibe, and the band's ability to effectively "modernize" themselves is admirable and worth a close listen.

Recording information: 1973 - 1987. This brief overview of one of the foremost bands of the 1970s and '80s includes popular hits like the romantic "After the Love Has Gone" and the gorgeous, swaying "That's the Way of the World," as well as drummer Maurice White's hypnotic kalimba playing on "Evil," and the bass-popping, funky "Mighty Mighty." Also featured here are the impossibly tight "Serpentine Fire" and the joyous "Sing a Song," the latter of which isn't so much a cure for the blues as a full-on exorcism.

"That's the Way of the World [Remaster]" (07/27/1999) R&B Earth, Wind & Fire, Legacy RecordingsAlso available in a 3-pack with SPIRIT and ALL IN ALL. Earth, Wind & Fire: Maurice White (vocals, kalimba, drums); Verdine White (vocals, bass, percussion); Philip Bailey (vocals, congas, percussion); Al McKay (guitar, percussion); Johnny Graham (guitar); Andrew Woolfolk (flute, soprano & tenor saxophones); Larry Dunn (piano, organ, synthesizer); Ralph Johnson, Fred White (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Matepe Ensemble, Saini Murira. Producers: Maurice White, Charles Stepney. Reissue producer: Leo Sacks. Includes liner notes by Robert Lipsyte. Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). Providing the soundtrack for the film of the same name, THAT'S THE WAY OF THE WORLD was originally released in 1975. The movie featured Earth, Wind & Fire as the Group and a young Harvey Keitel as their record producer. The album topped the charts for three weeks and is an R&B/funk classic. The opening chords of the number-one smash "Shining Star" begin a very special record. The song's positive lyrics are laid over a fabulous groove and arrangement. A smooth trumpet piece leads into the soprano harmonies of the title track. "Happy Feelin'" picks up the pace with standout percussion and sax solos. "All About Love" is a soulful ballad featuring Maurice White on vocals. "Reasons," sung by the equally competent Philip Bailey, takes the listener on a journey to the land of R&B perfection. "Africano," featuring a flute intro, is a flowing funkified number that would be the inspiration for many disco tunes of later years. "See the Light" showcases the production talents of Maurice White. This reissue also contains five unreleased demo versions, making it an essential purchase.

Earth, Wind & Fire: Maurice White (vocals, kalimba, drums, timbales); Verdine White (vocals, bass, percussion); Philip Bailey (vocals, congas, percussion); Al McKay (guitar, percussion); Johnny Graham (guitar); Andrew Woolfolk (saxophone, percussion); Larry Dunn (piano, organ, synthesizer); Ralph Johnson, Fred White (drums, percussion). Principally recorded at Wally Heiders, Los Angeles, California. Live bonus tracks recorded at Hollywood Sunset Sound, Hollywood, California on February 11, 1978. Includes liner notes by William C. Rhoden. This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players. GRATITUDE, recorded during Earth, Wind & Fire's 1974-1975 American tour, is an impeccably recorded live album. Given the band's knack for improv jamming and altered songs, you can be sure you won't be hearing studio tracks with a crowd dubbed in. From the supersonic rumblings of "Africano/Power" to the soul sing-along "Devotion" to the percussive party jam "Sun Goddess," all the signs of a classic live album are here. An almost nine-minute version of "Reasons" shows the soloing talents of the musicians. "New World Symphony" is an epic jazz number. Studio tracks recorded after the tour are also included, such as the perfect pop ditties "Sing a Song" and "Can't Hide Love." This re-release also contains a live bonus medley from a 1978 Natalie Cole TV special. With a running time of over 70 minutes, R&B lovers should give GRATITUDE for this release.

Recorded live at The Omni, Atlanta, Georgia; Civic Center, Baltimore, Maryland; Civic Arena, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, New York in May 1975. Includes liner notes by David Ritz. Few '70s-vintage R&B bands were more innovative or more influential than Earth, Wind & Fire. The band's trademark amalgam of pop, funk, and progressive soul can be heard echoing in the work of everyone from Prince to Phil Collins. Still, those who weren't there in the group's heyday (or just weren't lucky enough to see them) may not realize that EWF's dazzling studio creations received an extra amount of punch in concert. This situation is remedied by the arrival of ALIVE IN '75. Some of the group's most memorable songs, including the celebratory "Shining Star" and the transcendent "That's the Way of the World," are rendered all the more visceral for the startlingly high energy level of EWF's live show. The swinging, punchy horn section, Larry Dunn's celestial synthesizer work, and of course Philip Bailey's soaring vocals all combine and mingle with the energy of an enthusiastic audience to create a blissful soul experience.

Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York. 2004 Japanese reissue of the 1978 compilation. The CD has two bonus tracks: "Megamix 2000" and "Megamix" (Radio Edit). The vocals, drumming, and production of Maurice White. The soaring falsetto of Philip Bailey. The fat, thumping basslines of Verdine White. That fantastic, piercing brass. All these ingredients combine to make Earth, Wind & Fire one of the premier R&B/jazz/funk bands of the 20th century and beyond. Compilation producer Leo Sacks has expertly remastered THE BEST OF to superior sonic quality and added two bonus tracks to boot. "Got to Get You Into My Life" is a jazzy, soulfully swingin' take on the Lennon/McCartney composition. "Fantasy," perhaps the band's finest moment, combines stylistic percussion with inspiring harmonies. "Can't Hide Love" is finely crafted R&B sharpened to a glistening point by a tight horn section. "Love Music" is an uplifting groove that sounds brand new decades later. "Reasons" is a perfect R&B ballad, and Philip Bailey explains in the liner notes that though it's become a wedding song, it's really about a one-night stand. The explosive, funky "Shining Star" exudes spirituality. A bonus "Megamix 2000" (and edit) are included and combine various tunes into a club mix. THE BEST OF is a great overview of these Rock and Roll Hall of Famers.

"The Best Of Earth, Wind & Fire Volume 1 [Remaster]" (07/27/1999) R&B Earth, Wind & Fire, Legacy RecordingsEarth, Wind & Fire: Maurice White (vocals, kalimba, drums); Verdine White (vocals, bass, percussion); Philip Bailey (vocals, congas, percussion); Al McKay (guitar, percussion, background vocals); Johnny Graham (guitar, percussion); Andrew Woolfolk (flute, soprano & tenor saxophones); Larry Dunn (piano, organ, synthesizer); Charles Stepney (piano, programming); Ralph Johnson (drums, percussion). Producers: Charles Stepney, Joe Wissert, Maurice White. Reissue producer: Leo Sacks. Includes interviews with Maurice White, Verdine White and Phillip Bailey conducted by Leo Sacks. Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York.

"That's the Way of the World [Limited] [Remaster]" (09/06/2005) R&B Earth, Wind & Fire, Mobile Fidelity Sound LabAlso available in a 3-pack with SPIRIT and ALL IN ALL. Earth, Wind & Fire: Maurice White (vocals, kalimba, drums); Verdine White (vocals, bass, percussion); Philip Bailey (vocals, congas, percussion); Al McKay (guitar, percussion); Johnny Graham (guitar); Andrew Woolfolk (flute, soprano & tenor saxophones); Larry Dunn (piano, organ, synthesizer); Ralph Johnson, Fred White (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Matepe Ensemble, Saini Murira. Producers: Maurice White, Charles Stepney. Reissue producer: Leo Sacks. Includes liner notes by Robert Lipsyte. Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
