Tha Carter 2 [PA] [12/6]
"Tha Carter 2 [PA]" (12/06/2005) R&B Lil Wayne, Universal Records (USA)A one-time member of New Orleans's Hot Boys, rapper Lil Wayne attained a new level of confidence and skill on 2004's THA CARTER. That album featured only a few guest shots (as opposed to typically star-studded hip-hop records), and this 2005 sequel once again keeps things focused on Wayne, with the MC flying solo on almost every track. This uncluttered scenario, which relies on a spare, yet distinctly Cash Money-style musical backdrop, gives Wayne the freedom to let his laid-back rhymes stretch out, as best revealed on the ominous "Fireman" and the boastful "Best Rapper Alive." Clearly Wayne knows how to work a winning concept, since THA CARTER II stays true to both its predecessor and the relentless, unapologetic spirit of Southern rap.

20th Century Masters: The Millennium... [3/22] *
"20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: The Best of the Four Tops Vol. 2" (03/22/2005) R&B Four Tops (The), Hip-O RecordsThe Four Tops: Lawrence Payton, Levi Stubbs, Obie Benson, Duke Fakir (vocals). Additional personnel: The Temptations (vocals). Recording information: 1972 - 1983. After leaving Motown in the early 1970s, the Four Tops moved to the California-based label ABC/Dunhill (and in the '80s to Casablanca). Like the Temptations and other Motown acts popular in the '60s, the Four Tops were changing their sound to suit the times, infusing their smooth, harmony-laden pop with edgier, funky rhythms, and sociopolitical commentary. The Four Tops' best material from this later phase is collected on THE BEST OF THE FOUR TOPS VOLUME 2, a companion piece to the group's first installation in the 20th CENTURY MASTERS series. The set kicks off with the mellow, string-sweetened funk of "Keeper of the Castle," a Top 10 hit, and follows with "Are You Man Enough" (which was used as the theme for the film SHAFT IN AFRICA), a tough, soulful workout that is arguably the set's finest moment. Casablanca hits such as "When She Was My Girl" and the Levi Stubbs-led ballad "I Believe in You and Me" are also represented, as is "The Temptations and Four Tops Medley," a "showdown'" that the two groups performed on the Motown 25th-anniversary TV show in 1983. This well-selected 12-track compilation offers Tops fans the finest of the ensemble's '70s and '80s material under one cover.

The N.W.A. Legacy Vol. 2 [PA] by Various Artists (CD - 08/27/2002)
"The N.W.A. Legacy Vol. 2 [PA]" (08/27/2002) R&B Various Artists, Capitol/EMI RecordsWhen the hardcore hip-hop collective known as N.W.A. first appeared on the scene in the '80s, they blew their fair share of minds. Before this Compton crew arrived, no one had heard such mind-blowing beats married to such unapologetically sociopathic lyrics. The combined talents of Ice Cube, Eazy-E, and Dr. Dre made N.W.A. the standard by which all subsequent gangsta rap (and indeed many other hip-hop subgenres) would be judged. Some 14 years down the road, some members of the crew have gone on to even more successful solo careers, while others (namely Eazy-E) passed away too soon. But the group's glory days are both remembered and celebrated on this compilation. Featured here are a combination of solo tracks from the group members, a couple of full-fledged N.W.A. tracks, and offerings from peers and admirers ranging from Kurupt to Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, often with participation from Snoop, Eazy, or Dre. Whatever the format, you can rest assured that this disc is pure gangsta from start to finish.

The Very Best of Aretha Franklin, the 70's by Aretha Franklin (CD - 02/26/2008)
"The Very Best of Aretha Franklin, the 70's" (02/26/2008) R&B Franklin, Aretha, Rhino Records (USA)Personnel includes: Aretha Franklin (vocals). Producers: Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd, Arif Mardin, Quincy Jones, Curtis Mayfield. Compilation producer: Gary Stewart. Includes liner notes by Steven Ivory. Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot and Dan Hersch (DigiPrep). Audio Remasterers: Dan Hersch; Bill Inglot. Obviously, anybody who wants the very best of Aretha Franklin would want to have acquire Volume 1 before Volume 2, but that said, this is quite a nice collection of Franklin's strongest material from the '70s, including radio classics like "Rock Steady," "Don't Play That Song," "Day Dreaming," and "Until You Come Back to Me." You also get the underrated but thrillingly bluesy "Spirit in the Dark," and intriguing covers of "Border Song," and "Bridge Over Troubled Waters," in which Franklin gets to the songs' gospel cores that eluded their authors (respectively Elton John and Paul Simon).
