"Love Songs" (01/04/2000) R&B Manhattans (The), Legacy RecordingsThe Manhattans: Gerald (Smut) Alston, Winifred (Blue) Lovett, Kenneth (Wally) Kelly, Edward (sonny) (Dip) Bivins (vocals). Producers include: Leo Graham, James Mack, Dennis Lambert & Brian Potter, Teddy Randazzo. Compilation producers: Leo Sacks, Winfred (Blue) Lovett. Tracks recorded between 1976 and 1981. Includes liner notes by Elvis Mitchell. Digitially remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). Like Sony's other Love Songs compilations, this one runs the risk of overlapping too much with greatest-hits discs for some consumers' tastes. Seven of the 13 tracks here are on The Best of the Manhattans: Kiss and Say Goodbye, which, like Love Songs, surveys their recordings from the 1970s and early 1980s for Columbia. Still, this collection does retrieve three R&B chart singles that eluded The Best of the Manhattans...: "We Never Danced to a Love Song," "Girl of My Dream," and "The Way We Were/Memories." The disc is filled out by a couple of album tracks and their 1972 single "A Million to One," which was actually on the Deluxe label. ~ Richie Unterberger

"Love Songs" (01/15/2002) R&B Jackson, Michael, Motown RecordsPersonnel includes: Michael Jackson, The Jackson 5. Producers include: Bobby Taylor, Mel Larson, Jerry Marcellino, Hal Davis, Brian Holland. Compilation producers: Harry Weinger, Anthony Ellis. Recorded between 1969 and 1975. Includes liner notes by Brian Chin. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Liner Note Author: Brian Chin. Recording information: 02/1970. Arrangers: James Anthony Carmichael; David Blumberg; Fonce Mizell; Gene Page; David Van De Pitte; John Bahler; Bob West . Released in January of 2002, Motown's Love Songs contains 14 love songs and ballads Michael Jackson recorded, either by himself or with the Jackson 5, during his time on Motown in the early '70s. There are a few familiar songs here, such as "Who's Lovin' You," but the Love Songs series prides itself on mood, not hits, while providing just one or two tracks as collector's bait (a previously unreleased version of "I'll Be There" or the original mix of "Call on Me," for example). This means that it's the odd collection that sort of appeals to the dedicated, since it gives a different spin on the artist (but not really, since it recycles the catalog), and it sort of appeals to the casual fan, since it digs through albums to provide what they're looking for (but not really, since there aren't that many big hits here). So it fulfills the promise of the title quite well, but that doesn't necessarily mean that a lot of people will really need it (unless they're looking for mood music, of course). ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"Love, Hell or Right [PA]" (08/12/2003) R&B Mathematics, High Times RecordsA member of the sprawling Wu-Tang family, producer Mathematics' contribution has been duly noted by the hardcore fans and the Wu themselves. Although he took the credit in the Digital Bullet liner notes, RZA later admitted that it was Mathematics who produced the centerpiece of the album, "Must Be Bobby," and he's the go-to guy when it comes to reviving the Enter the Wu-Tang sound. Love, Hell or Right does sound like that album's grimy moments, and although members of the Wu show up here and there, the album is Mathematics' own. Minus RZA's Wu-promoting chant in ". On da Radio," the album is one of the least incestuous releases to emerge from the 36 Chambers studio. It's what makes it interesting, but also what keeps it from being a classic. Beat-wise, he can do no wrong. The slow hypnotic pulse of Love, Hell or Right looms like the cloud blown from a blunt with glittery soulful samples and blaxsploitation soundbites weaving in and out. Flowing like a Prince Paul record, it should go a long way to earn Mathematics the same respect. The problem lies in the forgettable contributions from non-Wu MCs. Lyrically there's little to focus on, and the album's liner notes don't even bother to list everyone. If he wasn't so comfortable with his low profile and searched out more accomplished MCs for his non-Wu projects, Mathematics could start a dynasty of his own. ~ David Jeffries

"Love Songs [MCA]" (01/23/2001) R&B James, Etta, MCA Records (USA)Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (Universal Mastering Studios-West, North Hollywood, California). Recording information: 05/??/1960-12/06/1974. Arrangers: Al Poskonka; Riley Hampton. Drawn almost entirely from her Argo/Chess recordings of the '60s (although there are some cuts from the early '70s), Love Songs is a fine selection of romantic music from one of the greatest blues singers of her generation. There are hits here, highlighted by "At Last," but mood overrules chart position, so these 14 songs wind up setting a seductive atmosphere and maintaining it from beginning to end. It's not essential for collectors, although some songs aren't all that easy to come by elsewhere. Instead, it's an album for casual fans, those who like James' style, especially when it's presented in a romantic setting. For these listeners, it's very worthwhile. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"LSD: Love, Sensuality and Devotion" (10/23/2001) R&B Enigma, Virgin Records (USA)Enigma includes: Michael "Curly MC" Cretu (vocals, various instruments, programming). Personnel: Ruth-Ann, Olive (vocals). Recording information: A.R.T. Studios, Ibiza, Spain. Arranger: Michael Cr?tu. LSD: Love, Sensuality and Devotion gathers over a decade's worth of Enigma's definitive tracks, including the song that started it all, "Sadeness, Pt. 1." "Return to Innocence," "Beyond the Invisible," and "Cross of Changes" are all featured as well, and though the collection ranges from the rock-tinged "I'll Love You...I'll Kill You" to atmospheric, electronic fare like "Shadows in Silence," since it's all essentially Michael Cr?tu's vision, it flows surprisingly well. Since Enigma's sound has varied fairly drastically over the years, LSD: Love, Sensuality and Devotion is the perfect starting point for anyone curious about Cr?tu's music, and the only Enigma album that casual fans might need. ~ Heather Phares Among the many artists that helped inject a pan-global flavor into American pop music is Enigma (A.K.A. Michael Cretu), a German artist who brought the sound of chanting Gregorian monks to the charts with "Sadeness (Part I)," a breakout smash from Enigma's 1990 debut MCMXC a.d. The collection LOVESENSUALITYDEVOTION rounds out the rest of the '90s for Enigma with plenty of undulating rhythms and world music hybrids. Dance beats are strung throughout this compilation and pop up on everything from the high-flying ambiance of "T.N.T. For The Brain" to the industrial clang of "Push the Limits" and the chugging "Modern Crusaders." One of Enigma's charms is the way the most unlikely elements find their way into the songs. A murmuring children's choir lightly breaks through the Asian-flavored "Cross Of Changes," the chant from a South American Indian gives the swirling "Return To Innocence" its distinctive character, and the whispered French and uttering of the title by Cretu's wife Sandra lends "Mea Culpa" a sensual edge. LOVESENSUALITYDEVOTION turns out to be a great drug for both the mind and the soul

LaToya London had a real good girl image while she was a finalist during the third season of American Idol. She was always perceived as strong, matronly, poised, and collected. At the time, she was married and had two stepchildren. Shortly after her fourth place finish on the show, she separated from her husband and her good girl image, as evidence on her debut album Love and Life on Peak Records. As expected, London still sounds amazing. Her vocals were consistently the strongest during her run on the show, and the album's vocals are no exceptions. Every power note is delivered with conviction, and every smooth, soft sound is crooned flawlessly. The only concern with the album is more the content itself. It borders on X-rated at points. Lines in "Waiting for You" and "Practice Makes Perfect" contain lyrics that are too inappropriate to even publish. In addition, the central focus of this album is sex. For a woman who made her fame on a family show, this style choice seems really risky. However, the impressive team of producers that London has chosen to work with have made a really smooth album that falls somewhere between an Ashanti release and a Jill Scott piece. London has a strong collection of hits that would appeal to different branches of the R&B/soul market. The lead single, "Appreciate" is a power single, complete with terrifically catchy beats, and a well placed rap by Black Thought from the Roots. The ballad portion of the album, especially considering London's decision to sing ballads continuously during the show, is rather paltry. What's really unfortunate is that the ballads are strong and impressive. "State of My Heart" is a poignant piece where London has never sounded better, even more so than on the show. Unfortunately, she has simply made some mistakes as an artist. By taking a sexually charged approach to R&B, she has lost many of the fans who supported her along the way, and her songwriting skills are not strong. London has co-written four tracks on the album, but they are four of the weaker tracks here. The highlight of the album comes right at the end, with "All by Myself," the Celine Dion ballad that first garnered attention for London. Perhaps this should send a message to London, that trying something different isn't always the way to go. In the very least, she sounds nice singing the inappropriate material. ~ Ma

Unknown Contributor Roles: James "D-Train" Williams ; Michael Fisher; Bill Eaton. Arrangers: Dave Grusin; David Paich; Patti Austin. With apologies to Dianne Reeves, Patti Austin has always quite simply been the best jack-of-all-genre singers on the planet, crossing effortlessly from jazz to pop and R&B with a voice that's so sweet, rich, and lovely, it can't help but warm the heart. On the heels of her 1988 masterpiece The Real Me, her GRP debut packs a wallop of festive up tempo tunes, lite funk pop, torchy message songs, passionate ballads, and breezy tenderness -- all delivered with a truly Austin-tatious flair. Austin surrounds herself with some of pop jazz's best here, with GRP's 1990 roster well represented: Dave Grusin (whose production is flawless), Don Grusin (with whom she co-wrote the happy "Ooh Wee (The Carnival)"), Deborah Henson-Conant (whose harp adds punch to "In My Dreams"), Lee Ritenour, and Nelson Rangell (whose alto soars on the title cut). But as tantalizing as the music is, it is Austin who gives the collection wings with a powerful voice whose mood she so artfully modulates depending on the feel of the individual tune. Soft and tender on her own composition "In My Life," easy and lilting for "In My Dreams," and full of genuine excitement for "Through the Test of Time" and "Ooh Wee." An added bonus is the Oscar nominated "The Girl Who Used to Be Me," which gives Austin a chance to show her range, even if the tune is a bit schmaltzy. ~ Jonathan Widran
