"Diana & Marvin [Remaster]" (01/09/2001) R&B Ross, Diana, Motown RecordsPersonnel includes: Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye (vocals). Producers include: Hal Davis, Berry Gordy, Bob Gaudio, Nickolas Ashford, Valerie Simpson. Reissue producer: Harry Weinger. Engineers include: Cal Harris, Art Stewart, Russ Terrana. Recorded at Motown Studios, Hollywood, California. Originally released on Motown (M803). Includes liner notes by Brian Chin. Digitally remastered by Suha Gur (Universal). When this DIANA & MARVIN was recorded in 1973, both Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye were at their commercial peak, although artistically they were heading in different directions. Nevertheless, their vocal blend was superb, so a duet album made both musical and sales sense. The resulting product was not only a chart hit but stands up well alongside the better known duets Gaye recorded with Kim Weston and (especially) Tammi Terrell. The material here, much of it crafted especially for the duo by Ashford and Simpson (of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough Fame,") is uniformly strong, and there are some very interesting covers, including a lovely and impassioned take on the Stylistics' "You Are Everything" and a soaring, gospel-flavored version of Johnny Ace's "Pledging My Love."

"I Want You [Remaster]" (04/08/1998) R&B Gaye, Marvin, Motown RecordsPersonnel: Marvin Gaye (vocals); Malvin "Wah Wah" Ragin, Ray Parker, Jr, David T. Walker, Dennis Coffey, Jay Graydon (guitar); Sonny Burke, John Barnes, Jerry Peters (keyboards); Chuck Rainey, Wilton Felder, Ron Brown, Henry Davis (bass); James Gadson (drums); Gary Coleman, John "Jack" Arnold, Bobbye Jean Hall, Eddie "Bongo" Brown (percussion). Recorded at Motown Studios & Marvin Gaye Recording Studios, Los Angeles, California. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Another in a series of superb wandering groove albums from the premier sweet soul singer. He took the standard three-minute pop soul song and expanded the format. It is Gaye that is responsible for today's smooching urban R&B; he was for much of his career many years ahead of the game. This has been described as his "oral sex" album, not that the others were not; this has the erotic edge. Built around the title track, the album is a theme album and as such should be played as a whole. There are no "Too Busy Thinking Bout My Baby's" on this; it is a much more challenging but satisfying work.

"Legend, Live & Forever" (03/28/2006) R&B Gaye, Marvin, LightyearPersonnel include: Marvin Gaye; Jaki Graham, Pete Escovedo, Shelia E. Recording information: 1979 - 1983. Subtitled "Newly Discovered Historical Recordings by the Great Master," LEGEND, LIVE & FOREVER is a collection of live Marvin Gaye recordings made in the late 1960s and the early '70s in Europe and Japan. Recorded on non-standard (sometimes amateur) equipment, the quality on many of the recordings--despite careful mastering--is of mediocre quality, and audiophiles will probably want to pass on the collection. Nevertheless, LEGEND gives an adequate picture of Gaye at the end of the '70s, and includes many of his timeless classics ("I Heard It Through the Grapevine;" "Let's Get It On"), then-new tunes ("Sexual Healing"), and several versions of "The Lord's Prayer." Gaye is in typically fine voice, his band is sharp, and the performances, despite the compromised recording quality, are solid and passionate. While not an essential addition to the Gaye canon, LEGEND will certainly be of interest to collectors and devoted fans.

"Trouble Man (Sdtk) [Remaster]" (04/07/1998) R&B Gaye, Marvin, Motown RecordsPersonnel includes: Marvin Gaye (vocals, piano, Moog); Trevor Lawrence (alto, tenor & baritone saxophones). Originally released on Tamla (322) in December, 1972. All tracks have been digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Gavin Lurssen at The Mastering Lab, Los Angeles, California. Tenuous though it is, history books list it as a Marvin Gaye album. Those who did not see the film (from which this is a soundtrack) might unsuspectingly think Marvin might sing on it. In fact he does on one track, the title song. The film was another low-budget blaxploitation detective movie that fell short of both Superfly (Curtis Mayfield) and Shaft (Isaac Hayes). Musically, however, the remaining instrumental music is hard to fault, even though it sounds very much of its era. Approach with some degree of caution, but expect to be pleasantly surprised.

"Let's Get It On" (09/09/2003) R&B Gaye, Marvin, Motown RecordsThis is a hybrid Super Audio CD, playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. Personnel include: Marvin Gaye (vocals, piano, keyboards); David T. Liner Note Author: Ben Edmonds. Recording information: Motown Studios-Hitsville West, Los Angeles, CA (1973); Hitsville, Detroit, Michigan (1973). Relishing the artistic freedom afforded by the success of WHAT'S GOING ON, Marvin Gaye recorded this sultry paean to sex. Where its predecessor relied on complex arrangements, the straightforward sound of LET'S GET IT ON focused attention on its tight rhythms, strong melodies, and Gaye's expressive, nuanced singing. For sheer sensual come-on, it's hard to beat the title track, one of the finest celebrations of the joys of human chemistry ever recorded. But the self-explanatory "Come Get to This" and "You Sure Love to Ball" aren't far behind in terms of passionate execution and visceral impact. Though LET'S GET IT ON has its reflective moments, notably the beautiful ballad "Distant Lover," Gaye's focus is on the here and now, and the intensity of his vocal performances and the silky, fluid feel of the arrangements inform the sensual "carpe diem" philosophy. Just as WHAT'S GOING ON opened the floodgates for political soul music, LET'S GET IT ON defined the "lover man" genre populated by luminaries like Al Green, Barry White, and Isaac Hayes.

"Live! At the London Palladium [Remaster]" (08/24/1999) R&B Gaye, Marvin, Motown RecordsPersonnel: Marvin Gaye (vocals, keyboards); Johnny McGhee (guitar); Bugsy Wilcox (drums); Jack Ashford (tambourine); Frankie Gaye, Jan Hunter (background vocals); Florence Lyles. Recorded live at the London Palladium, London, England. Includes liner notes by Harry Weinger. The shows comprising LIVE! AT THE LONDON PALLADIUM were Marvin Gaye's first London concerts in a decade due to his fear of flying. This overseas layoff did nothing to douse Gaye's magical live presence as he performed a set of songs spanning his career. On LIVE! the debonaire singer charms the audience and peppers the early part of this set with some of his more sensual material including "Since I Had You," "Come Get To This" and "Let's Get It On." The bulk of LIVE! is divided between three medleys. The first consists of material from his solo '60s period and features "Ain't That Peculiar," "Pride And Joy" and "Hitchhike." A medley of Gaye's early-'70s, socially conscious canon quickly follows and includes ""What's Going On" and "Save The Children." The third medley finds Florence Lyles playing Kim Weston/Tammi Terrell/Diana Ross during the duets section that includes "You're All I Need To Get By" and "It Takes Two." "Got To Give It Up" (whose single version went to the top of the American pop charts) is also included due to producer Art Stewart's belief that more material was needed to round out the set.

"Midnight Love & The Sexual Healing Sessions" (11/10/1998) R&B Gaye, Marvin, Legacy RecordingsDisc 1 is the original MIDNIGHT LOVE album in its entirety. Disc 2 is a collection of previously unreleased tracks recorded during the MIDNIGHT LOVE sessions. Personnel: Marvin Gaye (vocals, synthesizer, drums, Fender Rhodes piano, organ, vibraphone, bass synthesizer, orchestra bells, glockenspiel, percussion); Gordon Banks (guitar, bass, drums, Fender Rhodes piano, background vocals); Joel Peskin (alto & tenor saxophones); Bobby Stern (tenor saxophone, harmonica); David Stout and The L.A. Horn section (horns); James Gadson (drums); Harvey Fuqua (background vocals). Producer: Marvin Gaye Reissue producer: Leo Sacks. Recorded at Studio Katy, Ohaine, Belgium. Includes liner notes by David Ritz. Digitally remastered by Tom Ruff (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). 1982's MIDNIGHT LOVE turned out to be Marvin Gaye's final offering to the world, but his swan song was a moving and effective one. He managed to fuse his sensual, '70s-oriented brand of sinuous, progressive R&B with more electronic-based '80s production techniques, including drum machines, sequencers and synthesizers. It's a tribute to his artistry that the blend was so seamless and organic. "Sexual Healing," the signature tune from MIDNIGHT LOVE, combined the carnal with the spiritual in a manner rivaling vintage (secular) Al Green. This release reissues MIDNIGHT LOVE with a fascinating additional disc that features unreleased material from that album's sessions. The additional material, including alternate mixes, instrumental versions and even a rehearsal recording of "Sexual Healing" isn't really revelatory, but it's consistently intriguing, and a welcome look into the creative process of R&B's late, tortured genius.

"What's Going On [Remaster]" (01/14/2003) R&B Gaye, Marvin, Motown RecordsPersonnel: Marvin Gaye (vocals, piano, percussion); Robert White, Joe Messina (guitar); Felix Resnick (violin); David Ireland (viola); Italo Babini (cello); Danya Hartwick (flute); Larry Nozero (soprano saxophone); Eli Fountain (alto saxophone); George Benson, Wild Bill Moore (tenor saxophone); John Trudell, Maurice Davis (trumpet); Carl Raetz (trombone); Johnny Griffith (celesta, keyboards); Earl Van Dyke (keyboards); Jack Brokensha (vibraphone, percussion); Bob Babbitt, James Jamerson (bass instrument); Max Janowski (12-string bass); Chet Forrest (drums); Eddie Brown, Earl DeRouen (congas, bongos); Jack Ashford (tambourine, percussion). Liner Note Authors: Marvin Gaye; Ben Edmonds. Recording information: Hitsville, Detroit, Michigan. Originally released in 1971, WHAT'S GOING ON remains a landmark album, one that redefined music with powerful, anthemic songs that remain pertinent to this day. Before WHAT'S GOING ON, R&B albums were collections of singles, with secondary "filler" material rounding out the LPs. Marvin Gaye changed all this by releasing a concept album that went beyond the usual boy-meets-girl scenario, weaving together an aural collage of societal ills. "Crime is increasing/Trigger-happy policing," from "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)," is as potent a line today as it was over 20 years ago, and with the country still divided over the Vietnam War, the title track became a rallying cry for peace. Dark, mercurial, and jazzy, WHAT'S GOING ON was as radical musically as it was conceptually. Layered with lush orchestrations, heavenly background vocals, and loose, fiercely grooving arrangements, WHAT'S GOING ON so surpassed anything previously known as soul music that it virtually reinvented the genre. The critical and commercial success of Gaye's opus also enabled other artists to break free from the creative shackles imposed by Motown and other companies, and to experience more autonomy in musical and thematic expression, thereby changing the industry. In short, the musical and historical significance of WHAT'S GOING ON cannot be overestimated; it was Gaye's masterpiece, and still stands as one of the greatest soul albums of all time.

"Gold" (01/11/2005) R&B Gaye, Marvin, Motown RecordsPersonnel: Marvin Gaye (vocals); Kim Weston, Tammi Terrell (vocals). Liner Note Author: David Ritz. Recording information: 1962 - 1983. Motown's ANTHOLOGY: THE BEST OF MARVIN GAYE is probably the finest overview of Gaye's tenure at the label. Unfortunately, the collection is available only on import. Also, it has one glaring omission, Gaye's 1983 single "Sexual Healing" (from MIDNIGHT LOVE, not recorded for Motown). Columbia's GOLD, a superb two-disc collection of Gaye's brightest moments, does include "Sexual Healing," as well as the lion's share of the hits that appear on ANTHOLOGY. The fantastic batch of Gaye's early-'60s pop-soul singles, including "Stubborn Kind of Fellow," "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" and his duets with Tammi Terrell ("Ain't No Mountain High Enough"), is alone worth the price of the set. Transitional singles like "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" hint at the groove-oriented approach Gaye would perfect in the '70s with his socio-political masterpiece WHAT'S GOING ON, and his paean to desire LET'S GET IT ON. Smooth funk workouts like "Trouble Man" and "Got to Give It Up" flesh out disc 2. Though Motown's collection still wins out on wealth of material (it has 47 tracks to GOLD's 34), GOLD is still a top-notch sampler, covering all aspects of the soul icon's dynamic career.

"In Concert" (01/26/1999) R&B Gaye, Marvin, BCI Music (Brentwood Communication)All tracks have been digitally remastered. The album's minimal liner notes neglect to mention when or where this concert was recorded, but the inclusion of Marvin's final hit single, 1982's "Sexual Healing," places it at the end of his tragically shortened life. The irony of Marvin's death on April 1, 1984, is that after nearly a decade of personal problems, substance abuse and other difficulties, 1982's MIDNIGHT LOVE captured him once again at the height of his immense talent. Similarly, this all-hits program finds Marvin in exquisite voice, finding new and intriguing dimensions in songs from every part of his two-decades-plus career, from "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing" through "What's Goin' On" and "Inner City Blues" to "Let's Get It On" and "Third World Girl."

"Adults Only" (02/26/2002) R&B Gaye, Marvin, IMG RecordsAll tracks recorded for CBS between 1982 and 1987. Given Gaye's penchant for material of a sensual nature, one might expect an album with a title like ADULTS ONLY to be downright pornographic. Fortunately or unfortunately, that is not the case. ADULTS ONLY, while taking as its themes the topic of love's joys and perils, is cool, soulful, romantic, and surprisingly clean crooning at its best. The hugely popular and unbelievably great "Sexual Healing," which possesses an unbridled sensuous groove surpassed only by the artist's '60s hit, "Let's Get It On," sets the mood for what is to come. Heartfelt ballads--"I Live For You" and the richly orchestrated "Walkin' In The Rain"-are delivered with Gaye's inimitably sweet and restrained vocal style. These are counterbalanced by the light funk of "Joy," with its loose bassline and horn punctuations, and by the serious themes woven into the infectious groove tapestry of "Ain't It Funny (How Things Turn Around)." Lovers of the truly down n' dirty may be disappointed--and would be better served by seeking out Gaye's DREAM OF A LIFETIME, which contains such unblushing tracks as "Savage In The Sack"-but ADULTS ONLY is a superb collection of Gaye's latter-period soul artistry.

"Very Best Of Marvin Gaye (+Bonus CD)" (10/16/2000) R&B Gaye, Marvin, Motown Record Company (Germany)Personnel includes: Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell, Kim Weston (vocals); The Vandellas (background vocals). Producers include: Smokey Robinson, Ashford & Simpson, Ivy Jo Hunter, Norman Whitfield, Harvey Fuqua. Compilation producer: Harry Weinger. Includes liner notes by David Ritz. German edition adds a bonus CD. This generous two-disc compilation does an excellent job of tracing soul legend Marvin Gaye's career. It moves from his earliest, most pop-oriented recordings ("How Sweet It Is," "I'll Be Doggone") to his famed duets with Tammi Terrell ("Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing") and his later, more socially conscious work from the WHAT'S GOING ON era. Things kick off marvelously with the vibrant "Stubborn Kind of Fellow," where Marvin works his magic around sassy vocal assists from the Vandellas and a slightly Latin-tinged arrangement sporting flute and cowbell. Other stops along the way include songs from the ultimate make-out album LET'S GET IT ON, the latter-day glory of the subtly sensual "Sexual Healing," and of course the immortal "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," the scorned-love anthem whose ominous intro alone is enough to secure Mr. Gaye a place in pop heaven. If you're interested in this R&B giant's music but just want one bases-covering collection, this is the definitive release for you.

"Motown Legends: Mercy Mercy Me" (03/14/2006) R&B Gaye, Marvin, Collectables RecordsThough by no means a comprehensive collection, this 11-track MOTOWN LEGENDS disc assembles a handful of Marvin Gaye's best tracks. Interestingly, compiler Cary E. Mansfield has shuffled the chronological sequence, so the listener is treated to a zigzagging overview of Gaye's stylistic experiments at the famed label. The set kicks off with the politically minded, early-1970s groove of "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" from WHAT'S GOING ON, then backpedals to the pop-oriented, early-'60s R&B of "No Time for Tears." Gaye the popster and Gaye the socially astute soul revolutionary are juxtaposed throughout, and represented by such cuts as the doo-wop-inflected "There Goes My Baby" and the smooth, funky "Ego Tripping Out," respectively. Two bonus tracks close out the set--"Trouble Man," one of Gaye's best early-'70s songs, and his energetic version of the Norman Whitfield masterpiece "Cloud Nine" (which became a sizable hit for the Temptations). This compilation, while not an ideal starting point for Gaye fans, is still a thoroughly enjoyable set.

"Live! [Remaster]" (04/07/1998) R&B Gaye, Marvin, Motown RecordsPersonnel: Marvin Gaye (vocals); David T. Walker, Ray Parker (guitar); James Getzoff, Jack Shulman (violin); Ernie Watts (saxophone); Paul Hubinon (trumpet); George Bohanon (trombone); Joe Sample (keyboards); James Jamerson (bass); Ed Green (drums); Joe Clayton (congas); John Arnold (percussion); Eric Dolen, Charles Burns, Dwight Owens, Michael Torrance, Wally Cox (background vocals). Recorded live at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, Oakland, California on January 4, 1974. Originally released on Tamla (333). Includes liner notes by David Ritz. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Kevin Reeves (Polygram Studios, Edison, New Jersey). This 1974 concert documents a superb performer at the height of his popularity. The show was a rare treat for fans, since Gaye was just coming off a three-year, self-imposed period of isolation and a refusal to sing in public. The artist's reputed nervousness and fragility are nowhere in evidence, however, as he burns through superior treatments of such classics as "Trouble Man," What's Going On," "Inner City Blues," "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)," and the unsurpassable "Let's Get It On." Gaye croons with soulful intensity throughout, in a sweet and silky tenor. If the waves of female screams emanating from the audience are any indication, his voice is doing exactly what it should. A definitive version of "Distant Lover" proves a particular highlight for the excitable crowd. Gene Page's jazz-tinted orchestrations frame Gaye's performances nicely, and the band lends the proceedings an air that is equal parts raw groove and smooth sophistication. MARVIN GAYE LIVE! is an outstanding disc, showcasing one of soul and pop music's greatest voices.

"Dream of a Lifetime" (07/07/1987) R&B Gaye, Marvin, Columbia (USA)Contains selections Gaye was working on at the time of his death and some earlier unreleased material. Personnel: Marvin Gaye (vocals, synthesizer); Gordon Banks, Harvey Fuqua (synthesizer, bass, percussion, drums, background vocals); William Bryant II (drums); Connie Howard, The Waters (background vocals). Producers: Marvin Gaye, Gordon Banks, Harvey Fuqua. Engineers: John Kovarek, Barney Perkins, Gordon Banks. Recorded at Village Recorders and Devonshire Studios, Los Angeles, California; Yamaha Studios, Glendale, California; C.A.S.H. Studios, Compton, California. Includes liner notes by Larkin Arnold. Digitally remastered by Joe Gastwirt (Digital Magnetics). Portions of DREAM are culled from numerous secret recordings Gaye had made over the years. The rest comes from the album he was working on before his death. In this sense, DREAM is Gaye's last record. Fans of his classic '60s albums may take issue with the heavily synthesized feel of the sonic landscape here, Truth be told, Gaye seems more like himself than ever. Unlike fellow smooth-soul legend Al Green, who sacrificed his secular sensuousness for more sacred subjects, Gaye has gone in the opposite direction--so much so that the record carries a lyrical-content warning. Gaye isn't afraid to push boundaries. Witness the master/slave narrative of "Masochistic Beauty." Everything about such tracks as "Savage In The Sack" is nasty, including the grooves. DREAMS isn't just the squeak of bedsprings, however. Gaye is in equally fine form as a sensitive balladeer, investigating the gentler side of love ("Symphony") and his own life ("Life's Opera" and the title track). The last lines of "Dream Of A Lifetime" almost sound like parting words: "I may want to cry with the past/But it's easier to laugh about it/I thank God for my wonderful life." At such moments, DREAM serves as a quiet eulogy, reminding listeners to also be thankful for Gaye's singular, precious talent.

"Romantically Yours" (10/24/1989) R&B Gaye, Marvin, Columbia (USA)Compilation producers: Harvey Fuqua, Gordon Banks. Digitally remastered by Joe Gastwirt and David Mitson (CBS Records Studio). Gaye's comeback in the early '80s heralded the return of one of soul music's finest talents. This 1985 release finds the man in characteristically smooth, suave, sexy, and silky-voiced form. While fans of such earthier, bass-heavy Gaye grooves as "Let's Get It On" may take issue with the heavily orchestrated feel of this record, criticisms come up short upon hearing Gaye's stirring, sophisticated takes on these songs. A smattering of tracks sound somewhat stilted, such as the syrupy rendition of "Maria" (from WEST SIDE STORY). But ROMANTICALLY YOURS is largely a pinnacle of intimate mood music. Listening to "Why Did I Choose You?" and "Stranger In My Life," it's difficult not to envision oneself coupled in a cinematic living room scene, smooching on the couch in the glow of candlelight and white wine. Even in this latter part of his career, Gaye's influence is apparent. The interwoven vocal lines of "The Shadow Of Your Smile" or the jazzy "I Won't Cry Anymore" provide a definitive template for the "contemporary R&B" sound that flooded '80s and '90s radio. For lovers and for lovers of real soul music, Marvin Gaye was and is the man.

Leaving the safety and familiarity of Tamla/Motown has seen many artists take a flight to obscurity. Gaye turned it on its head and made his most successful album for over ten years. The pivotal track is "Sexual Healing," an idea given to him by his biographer David Ritz and co-written with Odell Brown. This track alone is worth the price of the album (even though it was a single). It oozes greatness with every second and was the last great Marvin Gaye song. And for the record, he played drums, piano, organ, bells, synths and bongos. A premier voice lost to the world.

"Here, My Dear" (04/05/1994) R&B Gaye, Marvin, Motown RecordsPersonnel: Marvin Gaye (vocals, keyboards, synthesizer); Gordon Banks, Wali Ali (guitar); Ernie Fields (alto saxophone); Charles Owens, Fernando Harkness (tenor saxophone); Nolan Smith (trumpet); Frank Blair (bass); Bugsy Wilcox (drums); Gary Jones, Elmira Colins (percussion). Reissue producer: Cary E. Mansfield. Recorded at Marvin Gaye Studio, Hollywood, California. HERE MY DEAR was originally released on Tamla (364) as a 2 LP set. Includes liner notes by David Ritz and Curtis M. Shaw. Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot & Dan Hersch (DigiPrep Studios). A concept album of some magnitude, although the subject matter could hardly have been comfortable listening for Anna, Marvin Gaye's ex-wife. She was the subject of Gaye's public 'divorce album', a clever idea if there were no real people involved. The illustration on the sleeve depicts love, marriage, pain and divorce, in addition to the scales of justice (equal). This lengthy album (originally a double vinyl) was poorly received by the critics, although now it has grown in stature, and it really does have considerable depth and melody. Let's face it, if Gaye sang a gardening seed catalogue from cover to cover it would be brilliant.
