In the legal battles that followed the Jackson 5's departure from Motown for Epic Records in 1976, the Jackson brothers lost the rights to their band name, and were known thereafter as the Jacksons. THE ESSENTIAL JACKSONS compiles the group's biggest hits from their tenure at Epic. Listeners should be forewarned that this compilation does not include material recorded under the name Jackson 5; so fans looking for "I Want You Back" and "I'll Be There" should seek out an earlier hits compilation. That said, this is an excellent sampler of the group's later incarnation, when their music, more heavily influenced by funk and disco, was polished to a high, danceable sheen. Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff wrote and produced the group's first Epic records, and many tunes, especially the string-sweetened "Show You the Way to Go," reflect a classic Philly soul sound. By 1978's DESTINY, however, the Jacksons were writing and producing their own material, and the infectious singles that resulted ("Blame It on the Boogie" and "Shake Your Body," in particular) are fantastic. The set closes with a live rendition of the Jacksons doing "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" (from Michael's OFF THE WALL).

"Trap House [PA]" (05/24/2005) R&B Mane, Gucci, Big Cat Records (USA)Personnel: Gucci Mane; Khujo Goodie, Killer Mike, Lil Scrappy, Young Jeezy, Jody Breeze, Young Snead, Torica, Mac Bre-Z, Bun B. Recording information: Big Cat Studio; PatchWerk Studios. For Atlanta MC Gucci Mane, the road to the release of his debut, TRAP HOUSE, was, to say the least, a bit bizarre. First there was a dispute over the underground hit "Icy," a collaboration with Young Jeezy of Boyz N Da Hood, with Gucci denying Def Jam the rights to put the track on the latter's debut record, which led to an exchange of accusatory mixtape tracks. Then, the week before TRAP HOUSE dropped, Gucci Mane found himself surrendering to murder charges. Controversy has rarely hurt record sales, but the album ultimately stands or falls on the strength of Mane's rap skills. To that effect, he is a charismatic rapper who rhymes with an agreeable rawness about rising from life on the streets. There is no smoke-and-mirrors obfuscation to his style; "Lawnmower Man" simply speaks of his prowess, "Black Tees" plainly, playfully swipes at the Dem Franchize Boyz hit "White Tees." The controversial "Icy" employs an electronic beat as spare as Mane's style for an effective paean to the streets. Across all the tracks, Gucci Mane's breezy demeanor contrasts his hard lyrics for a capable debut.

Cox. Producers include: Jermaine Dupri, TK, Jagged Edge, Jazze Pha, Bryan M. Cox. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Jagged Edge (vocals); Lee Dixon, Tatu "Joe Black" Hill, Major Damage, Rahj "Woonie" Rowe, Big Boi (rap vocals); Melvin Coleman (guitar, keyboards, vocoder, hand claps, drum programming); Joey P. (guitar, hand claps); Ray Holton, Kevin Hicks, Steve Wright, Rod Harris, Jr. (guitar); Dwayne Nesmith, Pierre Medor (keyboards); Jermaine Dupri (drums); Corey Presley (drum programming); Tiffany Beaudoin (background vocals). Audio Mixers: Jermaine Dupri; Alvin Speights; Phil Tan. Recording information: Brandon's Way, Hollywood, CA; Joi Studios, Decatur, GA; South Side Studios, Atlanta, GA. Photographer: Sacha Waldman. Arrangers: Bryan-Michael Cox; Lee Dixon; Dwayne Nesmith; Tatu "Joe Black" Hill; Kevin Hicks; Michael J. Henderson; Melvin Coleman; Phalon Alexander; Antwon Patton; Sick Cents Productions, Inc.; Hockefa Lamar; Vincent Brown; Jermaine Dupri; Keir Gist; Anthony Criss; Rahj "Woonie" Rowe; Pierre Medor; Brandon Casey; Brian Casey. Fresh off a 2002 GRAMMY nod for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration, Jagged Edge once again brings plenty of harmonies and attitude on its fourth outing, HARD. Working with a coterie of producers that include So So Def founder Jermaine Dupri, the men of JE continue down a path that's equal parts thug and lover. Making like Boyz II Men with swagger, these Atlanta natives easily shift gears from silk-sheet-and-champagne slow jams like "Walked Outta Heaven," "Visions," and the acoustic-guitar kissed "I Don't Wanna," to more up tempo fare, including the call-and-response "Girls Gone Wild" (featuring Major Damage) and the thumping "Tryna Be Your Man." As if all this singing about wooing the ladies wasn't enough, Jagged Edge take it up a notch with a pair of bonus cuts--"Car Show," (featuring a cameo by fellow Georgian and Outkast rapper Big Boi) and a remix of "They Ain't JE" that finds Street Katz and Woonie rapping in their two cents. Providing a musical bed for any type of romantic liaison, Jagged Edge prove the only thing HARD they bring to the table are the looks they're sporting on this collection's cover.

"Love Songs" (01/04/2000) R&B Manhattans (The), Legacy RecordingsThe Manhattans: Gerald (Smut) Alston, Winifred (Blue) Lovett, Kenneth (Wally) Kelly, Edward (sonny) (Dip) Bivins (vocals). Producers include: Leo Graham, James Mack, Dennis Lambert & Brian Potter, Teddy Randazzo. Compilation producers: Leo Sacks, Winfred (Blue) Lovett. Tracks recorded between 1976 and 1981. Includes liner notes by Elvis Mitchell. Digitially remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). Like Sony's other Love Songs compilations, this one runs the risk of overlapping too much with greatest-hits discs for some consumers' tastes. Seven of the 13 tracks here are on The Best of the Manhattans: Kiss and Say Goodbye, which, like Love Songs, surveys their recordings from the 1970s and early 1980s for Columbia. Still, this collection does retrieve three R&B chart singles that eluded The Best of the Manhattans...: "We Never Danced to a Love Song," "Girl of My Dream," and "The Way We Were/Memories." The disc is filled out by a couple of album tracks and their 1972 single "A Million to One," which was actually on the Deluxe label. ~ Richie Unterberger

"The Ultimate Collection [Sony/Epic] [Box]" (11/16/2004) R&B Jackson, Michael, Legacy RecordingsPersonnel: Michael Jackson (vocals, percussion); Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, Siedah Garrett, Diana Ross (vocals); The Notorious B.I.G., Vincent Price (rap vocals); Chris Tucker (spoken vocals); Larry Carlton, Michael Sembello, Tito Jackson, David E. Williams , Marlo Henderson (guitar); Jim Horn (saxophone); David "Hawk" Wolinski (electric piano); Michael Boddicker (synthesizer); John Robinson , Nathan Watts, Bobby Watson (bass instrument); Ollie Brown, Bill Bottrell (drums); Paulinho Da Costa, Randy Jackson , Richard Heath (percussion); Jim Gilstrap, Augie Johnson (background vocals); Seawind Horns. By 2004, Michael Jackson's bizarre image almost completely obscured the talent that had made him an international superstar. However, he became a musical icon by simply being the best at creating and performing pop songs. The opening moments alone of hits like "Rock with You" and "Billie Jean" would make them classic, but every aspect of these songs adds up to perfect radio pop. Jackson's THRILLER, after all, didn't simply luck into being the biggest-selling record of its time; each of its seven Top 10 hits had unique charms and drew from different elements of the pop universe. While there have been many previous Jackson hits collections, the four-CD/one-DVD ULTIMATE COLLECTION is just that--it represents Jackson's whole career, from his youthful days with the Jackson 5 to the early years of the 21st century. (The rare omissions--"Human Nature," "Heal the World"--show up live on the DVD.) Mixed in with his numerous hits are previously unreleased songs, demo versions of hits, album tracks, and odds and ends, most remarkably, one of the earliest versions of "We Are the World" with almost completely different lyrics. THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION expertly chronicles the career of one of the most important, if unusual, pop artists of all time.

"Ain't Nobody Worryin'" (12/13/2005) R&B Hamilton, Anthony, So So Def RecordingsPersonnel: Anthony Hamilton (vocals); Kelvin Wooten (vocals, acoustic guitar, strings, piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Clavinet, organ, keyboards, drums, percussion, drum programming); James Poyser (guitar, piano, Fender Rhodes piano, keyboards, drums, background vocals); Mark Batson (guitar, keyboards, drums); David Forman, Curtis Chambers, Raphael Saadiq, Norris Sirone Jones (guitar); Gloria Justin, Emma Kummrow (violin); Davis A. Barnett (viola); Larry Gold (cello); Christopher Farr (saxophone); Andy Skaggs (tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone); Matt Cappy (trumpet, flugelhorn); Tim Gordon (trumpet); John Thornton (trombone); David Balfour (keyboards); Bobby Ozuna (drums, percussion, turntables); Ahmir Khalib Thompson, Richard Jenkins (drums); Christopher "Wurlwyde" Pottinger (percussion); Tarsha McMillian, Stacey Richardson (background vocals). Audio Mixers: Vincent Dilorenzo; Daniel Romero; Phil Tan. Recording information: Allustrious Recording Studio, New York, NY; AXIS Studios, Philadelphia, PA; Blakeslee Recording Company, North Hollywood, CA; Reflection Sound Studios, Charlotte, NC; Studio 609, Philadelphia, PA; Westlake Audio, Hollywood, CA; WoodaWorx Productions, Huntsville, AL. Photographer: Danny Clinch. After the success of his 2003 album, COMIN' FROM WHERE I'M FROM, R&B/soul singer Anthony Hamilton followed up in earnest during 2005, first with a collection of previously unreleased tunes, SOULIFE, and then with another new studio record, AIN'T NOBODY WORRYIN'. This latter disc truly solidifies Hamilton's sterling reputation; it's an utterly confident outing that nods to 1970s soul music without being beholden to the style of that era. In fact, Hamilton's deft balancing of both vintage soul and contemporary production is what helps the expressive vocalist stand out in the crowd. Rather than calling up his R&B/rap peers for guest shots, Hamilton largely goes in alone on this solid record, allowing superstar producer Mark Batson and others to create organic backdrops that perfectly showcase his undeniable talent.

"Sounding Out the City [Digipak]" (08/23/2005) R&B Original Soundtrack, Fast Life Music, Inc.Original Soundtrack/El Michels Affair: Leon Michaels (various instruments); Rico Reese (strings); Varnell Lowe (keyboards); Aaron Johnson , Todd M. Simon. Personnel: Leon Michels (guitar, flute, saxophone); Thomas Brenneck (guitar); Alex Kadvan (strings); Michael Leonhart, Todd M. Simon (trumpet); Aaron Johnson (trombone); Bosco Mann (vibraphone); Nick Movshon, Homer Steinweiss (drums). Audio Mixer: Leon Michels. Photographer: Jamil GS. Arranger: El Michels Affair. As the work of DJ Spooky and other turntablists indicates, there's a seemingly limitless supply of rare and obscure deep funk grooves out there. However, attempts to replicate the sound have mostly been botched by inappropriate use of "updated" instruments and technology, creating a mutant half-breed that never quite works. Not so with the debut album by Brooklyn's el Michels Affair. Led by organist/drummer Leon Michels, this instrumental group has created a near-perfect simulacrum of late-'60s/early-'70s deep funk, jazz-funk, and soul-jazz, right down to the dub-like lo-fi quality of the sound, as if it were recorded quickly in a cheap studio. If that were all Sounding out the City was, however, it would be an impressive technical achievement but not a particularly interesting album. As it happens, however, Michels and crew have created an album that has as much melodic content (check out the simply gorgeous ballad "Behind the Blue Curtains") and soul as any of the albums it's an homage to. Leading off with the group's prized 2002 debut single "Detroit Twice," Sounding out the City is a canny blend of hard funk and gentler tunes like the Latin-influenced "This Song's for You." All 11 songs (ending with an excellent cover of Isaac Hayes' "Hung Up on My Baby") are between two and four minutes long, which avoids the unfortunate tendency some similar bands have to run a good groove into the ground through static repetition. That's what the repeat button is for, folks, and it should get quite a workout on this hugely enjoyable album. ~ Stewart Mason

Photographer: Anthony Mandler. Usher has been a symbol of tender sexuality ever since he shifted from teenage sensation to soulful superstar. He's breathtakingly good at what he does; possessing that undefinable essence known to a select few soul crooners (Al Green, D'Angelo, etc.) who radiate sensuality through song, Usher has reached an apex on the sultry CONFESSIONS, his fifth studio album. After the obligatory intro, Lil Jon kicks in with his exhortations on the catchy, dance-floor-ready single "Yeah." Usher follows that up with the sublimely sweet "Throwback," a torch song with a fantastic Motown hook. On "Confessions Part II," he exposes his most vulnerable side when admitting to his lover that he's fathered a child with another woman. Exemplifying his versatility, Usher follows the standard pop ballad "Simple Things" with the guitar-riff-driven "Bad Girl," somewhere between 1970s funk and '80s Prince. CONFESSIONS is the sound of an R&B luminary at the top of his game. Usher has been a symbol of tender sexuality ever since he shifted from teenage sensation

"Love Songs" (01/10/2006) R&B Hyman, Phyllis, Legacy RecordingsPersonnel: Phyllis Hyman; Grover Washington, Jr., Michael Henderson . Liner Note Author: Rashod D. Ollison. Arrangers: James Mtume; Grover Washington, Jr.; Reggie Lucas; Dick Berkhe; Hubert Eaves III; John Davis ; Jerry Peters; Kenny Gamble; McKinley Jackson; Roland Chambers; Skip Scarborough; Tawatha Agee; Tony Coleman; Thom Bell; Barry Manilow. The Phyllis Hyman installment of Legacy's LOVE SONGS series delivers exactly what listeners would expect: quiet-storm R&B with a strict emphasis on matters of the heart. And Hyman's silky voice is ideally suited to the seductive urban contemporary sounds with which she found her biggest audience. The set's two duets, with Grover Washington Jr. ("Sacred Kind of Love") and Michael Henderson ("Can't We Fall In Love Again") are highlights, but Hyman shines brightest on solo hits like "Be Careful (How You Treat My Love)."

"La-La Means I Love You: The Definitive Collection" (08/26/1997) R&B Delfonics (The), Arista Records (USA)The Delfonics: William Hart, Wilbert Hart, Randy Cain, Major Harris (vocals). Includes liner notes by Bill Dahl. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Liner Note Author: Bill Dahl. Illustrator: McDavid Henderson. The combination of Philadelphia vocal trio the Delfonics and genius producer Thom Bell was a potent force, resulting in 19 R&B hit singles on the Philly Groove label. All but the minor hit "Alfie" appear here, together with two album tracks, "Loving Him" and "Delfonics Theme." Virtually all the songs were written in-house (a dozen are credited to Bell/Hart). The main ingredients in the hit formula were William Hart's high tenor and his colleagues' harmonies floating over a luxurious bed of strings and horns. "Delfonics Theme" showcases the sound of the house band: it boasts a stately pace driven by the rhythm section, overlaid with orchestra, electric sitar and organ. The two biggest hits, "La-La Means I Love You" and "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)," are probably the best of the bunch, but this collection offers quality listening from beginning to end.

"Charlie, Last Name Wilson" (09/13/2005) R&B Wilson, Charlie, Jive Records (USA)Personnel: Charlie Wilson (vocals); Justin Timberlake (vocals); will.i.am (rap vocals, synthesizer); Snoop Dogg, Twista (rap vocals). When former Gap Band vocalist Charlie Wilson appeared on Snoop Dogg's "Signs" with Justin Timberlake, the 2004 track gave the Oklahoma native the widest exposure since his funk group's late-1970s/early-'80s glory days. In 2005, Wilson followed up on this momentum with the solo disc CHARLIE, LAST NAME WILSON, a potent dose of contemporary R&B that features production work by R. Kelly. Though much of the album is straight-up R&B/soul, it does stop in hip-hop territory, most notably on the steamy "So Hot" and the defiant "You Got Nerve" (with a guest shot by Snoop). Two other highlights reveal the smooth-voiced Wilson's range--"No Words" is a romantic ballad that will have listeners swooning, while "Floatin'" (performed with Timberlake and the Black Eyed Peas' Will.I.Am) revisits party-ready Gap Band-like funk. With its mix of old-school talent and 21st-century sounds, CHARLIE, LAST NAME WILSON is sure to appeal to a deservedly wide audience.
