If Dolby Digital decoding and downsizing your dinero deficit are two of your priorities, check out Denon's affordable AVR-1600. It offers the built-in decoding as well as the upgradability afforded by a battery of input jacks. Key features include 5.1-channel inputs, allowing connection with future decoders or processors, such as a DTS box. You also get pre-outs for the front three channels, so you can boost your amp power later (the unit sends 60 watts to the main channels). Denon has provided for music as well as home-theater listening. A mode paradoxically termed "5-channel stereo" provides music through your fronts and surrounds -- even mixing left and right and guiding it through the center channel. You'll find a gaggle of inputs and outputs around back, including a moving-magnet phono jack for vinyl. Video connectivity is limited to composite sources, so your S-video components will have to stand alone. You also get a pair of front-channel pre-outs for listening in another room, an AM/FM tuner with 40 presets, and a pre-programmed remote control.

Despite the RX-D702B's ultra-slim design, JVC's A/V control receivers provide amplification for up to seven channels. The secret to this outstanding feat is the JVC-exclusive Hybrid Feedback Digital Amp. A digital amp first digitizes the music signal, then amplifies it. The process of digital amplification combines high efficiency and reduced power dissipation through heat loss. So a digital amp requires a smaller transformer and power supply, permitting compact size and lightweight design. But with conventional digital amps, the process of converting analog signals to digital leads to the generation of digital noise. Fluctuations in the power supply voltages and power-supply noise can also aggravate analog noise. The JVC Hybrid Feedback Digital Amp solves the problem by using two feedback loops. The digital feedback loop significantly improves the precision with which the PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) signals are generated. The analog feedback loop "brushes up" the waveform of the analog signal at output to match the original. What's more, this JVC exclusive design is upgraded to "Version III," which features double feedback loops for both digital and analog. It effectively reduces the distortion caused by speaker impedance, enabling even lower total harmonic distortion - around 0.004 percent.

The engineers at Sony pulled out all the stops when designing this home theater receiver, one of the most advanced models in their premium ES line. The STR-DA7100ES delivers enveloping, intensely dynamic surround sound from all your movies and music, thanks to a wealth of cutting-edge digital technologies and rigorous ES construction standards. It's also loaded with features that make your entire home entertainment system both extremely flexible and easy-to-use. Employing the latest generation of Sony's exclusive audiophile-grade digital amplifiers, the 'DA7100ES packs a whopping 170 watts x 7 channels of clean, accurate power. And ultra-precise digital processing lets you enjoy lifelike 360° surround sound for all of your home entertainment options, from video games and TV shows to all of your stereo music sources. The 'DA7100ES also offers advanced video switching capabilities that will really streamline the way you connect and use all of your video components. You get switching for two high-resolution video sources with HDMI outputs — like an HDTV tuner and a DVD player — plus analog-to-HDMI video conversion for older sources like a cable box and a VCR. That means you can send all of your video sources to any TV with a digital input using only one cable. This greatly simplifies video switching, while also preserving maximum picture quality for each source. Two i.LINK® interfaces let you make single-cable connections to compatible high-resolution multichannel music sources, like Super Audio CD (SACD) and DVD-Audio players. All-digital i.LINK connections provide the cleanest, most accurate sound possible from these audiophile music formats. You also get a wealth of more conventional audio and video inputs and outputs, so you can hook up plenty of older components, too. Three-room/three-source output provides flexible listening and viewing options: You can enjoy surround sound in your home theater room while a housemate watches a different video source in a second room, and another friend listens to stereo music in a third room. A learning/multibrand LCD remote provides easy control of all your components.
