Seeking a high-end A/V receiver for a luxury-class home theater? If so, Denon's AVR-4800 certainly deserves a look. Not only can it do just about anything you'd want a receiver to do, but it's also the first Denon receiver to decode THX Surround EX. The AVR-4800 is THX Ultra certified, the higher-end of the two THX certification programs (the other is called THX Select). It offers Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic, and DTS surround decoding. It's also got component video switching via two component inputs and one component output. Two 32-bit SHARC floating point chips handle the processing duties: one chip is dedicated to Dolby Digital and DTS, while the other handles THX post-processing and Surround EX. Digital-to-analog (D/A) conversion is done by one Analog Devices 96 kHz/24-bit D/A converter per channel. Two sets of rear-surround speaker outputs, along with the option to use a separate 2-channel amp to power either the front L/R speakers or both sets of rear-surrounds, provide a variety of hookup options. You could use two speakers for the rear-center-surround EX channel. Or, in other modes, the extra outs could provide a choice of side rear-surround speakers (believed best for home theater) or back rear-surrounds (the preferred configuration of 5.1-channel music producers). Also, the unit's 7.1-channel inputs allow for connection to external decoders, so you can keep up with future multichannel formats. The AVR-4800's discrete amp pumps out 125 watts times five channels. Connectivity options include 11 analog inputs, five optical and three coaxial digital audio inputs, one digital optical output, six composite/S-video inputs, and four composite/S-video outputs. All of these, along with the previously mentioned component video inputs and output, should let you build quite a hefty rack of components covering the entire audio/video spectrum. In fact, the 4800 is one of the rare A/V receivers to provide for both phono and laserdisc compatibility; it includes both phono and RF Dolby Digital inputs.As for conveniences, the receiver remembers settings according to input source, so you don't have to adjust as you move from watching a DVD to listening to your local NPR station. The unit comes with a learning remote control and has an on-screen display for system configuration. -- PJR

The AVR-5800 proudly bears the THX Ultra logo, certifying that it satisfies the strict standards of Lucasfilm, Inc., governing performance, features, sound quality, power, stability into low impedance speaker loads (3.2 ohms and higher) and ease of operation. In addition, THX 5.1 and 4.0 post-processing enhancements enrich the motion picture soundtrack reproduction, providing timbre matching, re-equalization, precision time delay adjustments, dynamic decorrelation and superior bass management.
