Onkyo's TX-DS575X (an improved version of the original TX-DS575) falls squarely in the middle of their line of A/V receivers. With on-board Dolby Digital and DTS decoding along with Dolby Pro Logic processing, this receiver can squeeze surround sound out of just about any source. The TX-DS575X kicks out 70 watts per channel into 8 ohms, which if paired with reasonably efficient speakers should be plenty of power for a mid-sized home theater. The 96 kHz/24-bit DACs (digital-to-analog converters) help ensure that audio crosses the digital divide without stumbling. The sound can be tweaked using the eight digital signal processing (DSP) modes like "Orchestra," which emulates the sound of a concert hall. For surround sound buffs, Onkyo includes Lucasfilm's Cinema Re-EQ, which takes some of the harshness out of digital soundtracks. The list of inputs starts off with four digital inputs (2 coaxial, 2 optical), assignable to any of the appropriate sources, such as DVD, CD, MiniDisc or DAT. The analog connections include three audio-only inputs, and four A/V inputs with S-video. Tape and video loops should appease the home recording crowd, while a moving magnet phono input should soothe turntable fans. The 5.1-channel input makes this receiver compatible with the DVD-Audio players. All speaker connections use sturdy binding posts in place of flimsier wire clips used for the surround channels of the original TX-DS575. Finally, the backlit learning remote contains codes for many devices by other manufacturers, and won't leave you fumbling in the dark when watching your favorite DVD.If you can live without the Cinema Re-EQ and with wire clip surround connections, you can save about $25 with Kenwood's VR-410, which boasts 100 watts per channel and front-panel A/V inputs (including S-video) for temporary connections such as camcorders and video game consoles.-- PJR
