The HTR5790 is a full-featured home theater receiver ready for all formats. It sports a couple of features that not only improve the sound quality of your system, they also make your life a little easier. Component Video Up Conversion takes S-Video and composite signals and converts them into a component signal. This not only ensures the highest quality video from any source, it means you only need one connection to your HDTV monitor. No more switching inputs according to your source, it can all go through the component video connection. The HTR5790 also has YPAO (Yamaha Parametric Room Acoustic Optimizer) which uses an optimizer microphone at the listening position to pick up test tones from your speakers, which the system then analyzes to let you know the best audio parameters. The system will even automatically equalize the sound according to the readings it takes, for the ultimate in convenience.

There have been spacecraft with fewer features than Yamaha's flagship A/V receiver, the RX-V1. This receiver was created to take advantage of all of the surround sound and digital processing technologies currently on the fore, including 8-channel surround sound, digital matrix 6.1 and DTS ES. It also provides video switching with a bevy of S-video and composite connections. The RX-V1's processors deliver 54 DSP (digital signal processing) settings, including 70mm Cinema DSP, Tri-Field Processing DSP, Digital DSP, digital Matrix 6.1 and DTS ES. It will also decode Dolby Pro-Logic and simulate such venues as the Roxy in L.A. and the Village Gate in NYC. The RX-V1 provides 110 watts to each of the six main channels and will also kick 35 watts to the extra left/right front-effects channels. And, if your listening room is large, an extra output allows the connection of an additional center-channel speaker. Balancing out the eight audio outputs, the RX-V1 provides eight A/V inputs, including one on the front panel. All of the rear-panel video connections are armed with S-video. There are also seven digital audio inputs and four analog stereo inputs. Yamaha didn't overlook the basics when it built this super-computing behemoth. An AM/FM tuner with 40 nameable presets, a sleep timer that can be set in 30-minute increments, a bass-boost switch, a headphone jack, and a universal remote control are also part of the feature mix. The RX-V1 is also available with a gold-colored faceplate for $100 more. -- EM
