Although Yamaha's RX-596 receiver sports what they call a "V-cut" (sharp concave) front panel and fluorescent display, in all other respects it is "oldschool."This AM/FM stereo receiver puts out 80 watts per channel with less than 0.19% rated distortion (THD). On the tuner side, it offers 40 station presets and auto preset, which scans local waves and selects and stores the strongest signals. All of this can be controlled by a universal remote control that is equipped to operate with other Yamaha components.The receiver has inputs for up to six sources and two tape monitor loops. The tape out selector allows you to record from one source while listening to another. For radio listeners who are currently employing a wire hanger for perfect reception, the RX-596 has a signal quality meter, a relative rarity which provides assistance for precise antenna adjustments.-- EM
