"Riddim Driven: Dancehall Rock [Limited]" (05/23/2005) Reggae Various Artists, VP RecordsAudio Mixers: Cordell "Scatta" Burrell; Everton "Eva" Burrell. Recording information: Kings Of Kings Studio, Kingston, Jamaica. Editor: Paul Shields. Dancehall Rock is the latest in VP Records' Riddim Driven series, and like the other entries, it features 15 contemporary Jamaican dancehall artists voicing over the same rhythm track, in this case, the so-called "dancehall rock" rhythm developed out of the King of Kings Studio in Kingston. This approach to assembling an album can be either fascinating, as toasters and singers exhibit intuitive creative choices in what they choose to place over the rhythm, or maddening, with the whole enterprise breaking down into a kind of busy-sounding boredom, since what is essentially the same song is played over and over and over again. Here, unfortunately, the dancehall rock rhythm doesn't have a whole lot going for it in the first place, so the sometimes trance-inducing power of this approach is muted, with only a handful of tracks rising above all the clamor. The lead version, "Ova Di Wall," by Elephant Man, benefits greatly by being first, because pointless repetition sets in fairly quickly, although the speed rap attack of Hollow Point on "Sen On" is exhilarating, at least by comparison to most of what is here, and Voicemail's "Higher" manages to wring some level of romantic emotion out of the rhythm with his smooth neo-soul crooning. By far the most successful version here, the eerie, sliding "Pop No Style" by Chico, is the penultimate track, and thus comes far too late to rescue the listener from what has preceded it. These kinds of compilations have their place, certainly, and go a long way toward illustrating why dancehall enjoys such tremendous popularity in Kingston and elsewhere, but the very basic rule in assembling an album like this should be to start with a solid -- if not spectacular -- rhythm track, and that simply isn't the case here. ~ Steve Leggett Dancehall Rock is the latest in VP Records' Riddim Driven series, and like the other entries, it features fifteen contemporary Jamaican dancehall artists voicing over the same rhythm track, in this case, the so-called "dancehall rock" rhythm developed out of the King of Kings Studio in Kingston. "Riddim Driven: Blazing and Chiney Gal" (05/23/2005) Reggae Various Artists, VP RecordsRIDDIM DRIVEN VOL. 1 features different vocal versions recorded by various artists over the Chiney Gal and Blazing riddims. Performers include: Elephant Man, Beenie Man, Capleton, Sizzla. Compilation producers: Norman "Bul Pus" Bryan, Cecile Charlton. Engineers include: Cordell "Skatta" Burell, Shane Brown. Audio Mixer: Shane Brown. Recording information: Tuff Gong Recording; Xclaim Studio. Like the myriad other Riddim Driven albums released by VP, the Blazing and Chiney Gal volume features an ensemble of reggae vocalists singing over a given producer's riddim, in this case producer Cecile Charlton. Though the production is generally top-notch, it lumbers on for the entire CD, often getting monotonous toward the conclusion. Thus, the vocalists are left to engage you, and since they come and go swiftly, your patience is often tested throughout the listening experience. Regardless, the series has proven successful for VP because many listeners enjoy the seamless beats and the variety of vocalists. ~ Jason Birchmeier

"Riddim Driven: Maybach 365" (05/23/2005) Reggae Various Artists, VP RecordsThe Maybach 365 rhythm is hip- hop influenced, with an almost maddeningly simple and infectious electric piano riff at its center. Not as rough and booming as most current dancehall rhythms, it is really a perfect hybrid between the Kingston and Brooklyn scenes. This compilation, like the others in VP's Riddim Driven series, voices several DJs, toasters, and singers over one backing track in what can appear -- if you're not paying close attention -- to be one extremely long dance track. Among the better variations here are the first voicing, "Maybach," which rotates Buju Banton, Major Damage, and Benzino at the mic, and Red Fox's "After Party," which features Mr. Easy. An unlisted 19th track is actually the Maybach rhythm with no frills added, giving a sort of behind-the-curtain glimpse at the foundation that holds up this whole house of cards. ~ Steve Leggett

"R&B Hits Reggae Style, Vol. 2" (05/23/2005) Reggae Various Artists, VP RecordsPhotographer: Paul Neil. This collection features several Jamaican vocalists taking a shot at redefining American R&B in an island context. Sanchez leads things off with an easy, bubbling version of Luther Vandross' "Superstar" that is easily the most interesting track here, although Glen Washington's take on Luther Ingram's "(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right" and J.D. Smooth's bright run-through of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" are also both memorable. The rhythms are on the safe side, and nothing here is too jarring, making for a pleasant listen, but one wishes for a little bit of that intangible edginess that characterizes the best Jamaican music. ~ Steve Leggett
