"Slow Bounce [PA]" (12/21/2004) Reggae Various Artists, Greensleeves RecordsRecording information: Vendetta Studio, Kingston, Jamaica. Illustrator: Tony McDermott. Michael "Liquid" Brissett's "Slow Bounce" rhythm -- a sharp and minimalist groove that bubbles along somewhere between an old-school dancehall flavor and a jumpy soca feel -- is the foundation for number 65 in the Greensleeves label's series of one-rhythm albums. As usual, a nicely mixed roster of established stars (Vybz Kartel, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Elephant Man) and up-and-comers was invited to sing or chat over the rhythm, and in this case it brings out the best in just about all the participants. Elephant Man's singing attempt doesn't quite work, but his speed-rap toasting is as tight as always, and the same is true of the silver-tongued Vybz Kartel and the gruffer Bounty Killer. Macka Diamond's singjay performance is a highlight track, as is the tag-team rapping of Ward 21. But top honors go to Tami, whose "Me Nuh Waa Dat" features both a brilliant kiss-off lyric and a hooky melody. It would have been nice to see the instrumental mix varied a bit more from track to track, but "Slow Bounce" is a strong enough composition to stand up to repeated listenings in its original form without causing too much weariness. Recommended. ~ Rick Anderson

"Riddim Driven: Slow Down the Pace" (05/23/2005) Reggae Various Artists, VP RecordsProducers: Sheldon "Calibud" Stewart, Norman "Bull Puss" Bryant. Like the myriad other Riddim Driven albums released by VP, the Slow Down the Pace volume features an ensemble of reggae vocalists singing over a given producer's riddim, in this case producer Norman "Bull Pus" Bryan. Though the production is generally top-notch, it lumbers on for the entire CD, often getting monotonous toward the conclusion. Thus, the vocalists are left to engage you, and since they come and go swiftly, your patience is often tested throughout the listening experience. Regardless, the series has proven successful for VP because many listeners enjoy the seamless beats and the variety of vocalists. ~ Jason Birchmeier

"Slow Down" (05/12/2006) Reggae Brown, Dennis, Greensleeves RecordsPersonnel: Dennis Brown (vocals); Earl "Chinna" Smith, Simon Rochester (guitar); David Madden, Dean Fraser (horns); Tony Asher (keyboards); Benbow, Sly Dunbar (drums); D'Jango, Prince Jammy (percussion). Recording information: Channeo One. Photographer: Timothy O'Sullivan. Arranger: Prince Jammy. Dennis Brown's career went off the boil in the early '80s, until he paired up with Gregory Isaacs in 1984 and recorded two excellent albums, which turned back up the heat. The first, Two Bad Superstars Meet, was produced by Prince Jammy, and it was to him that the singer turned when he came to record 1985's Slow Down, which is now reissued by Greensleeves. By this point, Jammy had established himself at the forefront of dancehall production, but his style worked equally well with roots veterans like Brown himself. A rootsy sound permeated his productions, albeit cut through with digital sounds, while his heavy use of horns and mid-tempo rhythms harked back to the rocksteady age. All of this conspired to provide a perfect backdrop for Brown, and all of Slow Down just simmers. Its follow-up, The Exit, gained the lion's share of attention; however, all the elements that made that a great album were already in place here. Packed with powerful vocal performances, Brown shifts through emotional gears and lyrical themes, just as passionate on the love songs as the cultural tracks. The single "Slow Down Woman" and "It's Magic" (a nod to Motown) are particularly delightful poppy numbers, "They Fight I" and "Africa We Want to Go" are stand-outs among the rootsier cuts, while "Come on Over" and a cover of John Holt's "Let's Build Our Dreams" are a sublime blend of roots and rocksteady. The other six songs are just as strong. Jammy's style appealed to audiences across the musical spectrum, while Brown's ability to shift from roots to lovers rock electrified audiences young and old, making Slow Down one of those rare records: an album that really can be all things to all people. ~ Jo-Ann Greene
