This epic chronicle of Christ begins with the arrangements of the wedding between Joseph and Mary, proceeds through Jesus' birth, his encounter with John the Baptist, and all the way to the grueling, transfigurative end. The all-star cast includes Anne Bancroft, Laurence Olivier, Michael York, James Mason, Rod Steiger, and Robert Powell as Jesus. As the beautiful locations, superb performances, and reverent portrayals reveal, Franco Zeffirelli (OTELLO, HAMLET) directed this six-hour-plus television miniseries with palpable passion.

MGM turned Henry Sinkiewicz's Nobel Prize-winning novel into one of the most extravagant production in film history. The epic tale is set in the decadence and decay of Nero's Rome, where Christianity is just beginning to foment. Robert Taylor (BILLY THE KID, JOHNNY EAGER) stars as Marcus Vinicius, a Roman military commander who falls in love with Lygia, played by Deborah Kerr (KING SOLOMON'S MINES, THE KING AND I). Lygia has recently converted to Christianity, and Marcus follows suit. The conversion establishes a rift between Marcus and the emperor Nero (Sir Peter Ustinov), who blames the growing religion for the turmoil within his empire, going so far as to throw Christian converts to the lions. But the real appeal of QUO VADIS is the grand Technicolor spectacle of ancient Rome burning, of pagan orgies, of marching armies, and of man-eating lions. Combined with the stunning score by Miklos Rozsa, QUO VADIS is worth watching simply for the orgy of sound and vision it offers.

Six entries in the Bible Collection series are collected here. ABRAHAM: This is a dramatization of the life of Abraham, the most tested servant of God, from his quest for the Promised Land to the sacrifice of his son. DAVID: Mirroring FORREST GUMP and the films of Hal Ashby, this production depicts David as a simple man who rises to greatness as he is chosen to be the ruler of Israel. In the process, he defends his people by slaying a giant and becoming a military legend. Nathaniel Parker plays the title character in this television movie of epic scope. JACOB: This entry in the series is based on the biblical story of Jacob, who betrayed his brother and toiled long in penance before receiving God's grace and forgiveness. JOSEPH: This is a fine dramatization of the Old Testament tale of Jacob's son who rose to power in Egypt, much to the dismay and chagrin of his 10 older brothers. MOSES: In this lavish production of the Old Testament story, an ordinary man is called upon by God to do the impossible. When the pharaoh of Egypt begins to tighten the noose on his people, Moses finds himself leading them to freedom--and lands unknown. SAMSON AND DELILAH: A beautiful Philistine woman betrays a man whose strength can single-handedly defeat entire armies in this dramatization of the famous Bible story.

The heartwarming television dramedy 7TH HEAVEN blends sometimes outlandishly comic situations with dramatic plotlines about serious social issues into a positive affirmation of family values and Christian morality. Produced by Aaron Spelling, the series centers on an all-American family headed by Reverend Eric Camden (Stephen Collins) and his stay-at-home wife, Annie (Catherine Hicks), as they struggle with the daily stresses and joys of parenting. Meanwhile, the Camdens' seven children--among them Lucy (Beverley Mitchell), Simon (David Gallagher), youngest daughter Ruthie (Mackenzie Rosman), and twins Sam and David (real-life twins Lorenzo and Nikolas Brino)--navigate the trials and tribulations of growing up with wholesome aplomb. This collection presents every episode of the family drama's eighth season, including appearances by Jessica Biel, Richard Lewis, and Dick Van Patten.

George Stevens presents his monumental adaptation of the story of Jesus Christ starring Max von Sydow. The film concentrates on the most familiar episodes of the biblical story, including the birth of Christ in Bethlehem, Herod's (Jose Ferrer) decree of the execution of all male children in Judea, and the Holy family's escape into Egypt. It continues as Christ encounters John the Baptist (Charlton Heston) searches for the Twelve Apostles, and raises Lazarus (Michael Tolan), while John the Baptist is executed. It concludes with Jesus' expulsion of the moneylenders from the temple, the instruction of the Apostles at the Last Supper, Christ's betrayal by Judas (David McCallum), the Passion, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection. The product of years of research and planning by Stevens, the film features a huge cast of stars, among whom Von Sydow, McCallum, Dorothy McGuire (Mary), Sidney Poitier (Simon of Cyrene), Claude Rains (Herod the Great), Donald Pleasence (The Devil), Martin Landau (Caiaphas), and Janet Margolin (Mary of Bethany), give fine performances.

DAVID AND BATHSHEBA brings to life what is possibly the most dramatic story in the Old Testament. Gregory Peck stars as King David, a devout servant of God who is having serious marital difficulties with his wife Michal. Recently returned home from the wars with the Ark of the Covenant in tow, David spies hottie Bathsheba (Susan Hayward) bathing on a nearby rooftop, and in no time at all the two lovebirds are tossing their togas to consume their passion. Of course, there are a couple small hitches--Bathsheba's husband for one, and the wrath of God. With a drought upon the land and King David's flock demanding that Bathsheba be stoned to death for her sins, dashing David must come up with some new psalms on the double to save the kingdom and his love. Special effects work on the Ark was innovative for the period and the costuming is excellent, making DAVID AND BATHSHEBA one of the better biblical films of the 1950s.
