Mervyn LeRoy directed this excellent biography of the life of Madam Curie, the Polish woman who discovered radium. The film presents the scientific and romantic life of Curie with great authenticity, basing the story on the biography by Curie's daughter, Eve. Greer Garson stars as a stunning woman too in love with science to have time for men. Walter Pidgeon plays her perfect complement, a man who thinks of an effective marriage as a form of chemical compound. He's right--the chemistry between the two stars is excellent, and the black-and-white photography by Joseph Ruttenberg is gorgeous. From the work in the lab to the honeymoon, the story line is treated with an integrity and intelligence that makes it as educational as it is intriguing.

Based on the play by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Robert E. Sherwood, WATERLOO BRIDGE stars Vivien Leigh as Myra, a shy ballerina whose life is irrevocably altered in war-torn London. It's love at first sight when Myra meets handsome, aristocratic British officer Roy Cronin (Robert Taylor) in the midst of an air raid. The couple soon plans to wed, but Cronin is called to the front, and shortly thereafter a newspaper reports his death. Forced out of ballet school, alone and destitute, Myra turns to prostitution. When she discovers that the newspaper report was inaccurate, Myra is unable to tell Cronin about her professional life, and tragedy ensues. This 10-handkerchief weeper was directed by Mervyn LeRoy. Joseph Ruttenberg's photography is beautiful, as is the inspired soundtrack by Herbert Stothart (THE WIZARD OF OZ), but what makes WATERLOO BRIDGE is Leigh's stunning performance and the very real chemistry between her and Robert Taylor.

This biographical pictures tells the story of famed scientist/theorist Galileo Galilei (Topol, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF) as he reaches a pivotal point in his life. At the crux of the Plague and the Reformation, the Catholic Inquisition placed many forward thinkers at risk. Galileo was no different, and was pinned under the demands of science, government, and church. Spurred by a new student, Galileo uses new telescope technology to prove that Earth is not the center of the universe -- a theory that proves heretical in his society. Will Galileo choose to protect his life, or scientific integrity?

Freddie Bartholomew (DAVID COPPERFIELD, CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS) plays Cedric Errol, a poor Brooklyn boy destined for greatness in this film based on the lovable story by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Although Ceddie doesn't know it, his deceased father was an English nobleman. When it becomes apparent that Ceddie is heir to an English title and an immense fortune, his mother (Dolores Costello Barrymore) takes him back to England, where they discover that her father-in-law, the earl of Dorincourt (C. Aubrey Smith), despises Americans. To win his birthright, Ceddie must struggle against false claims to his title as well as his grandfather's cantankerous disposition. Director John Cromwell (SO ENDS OUR NIGHT, OF HUMAN BONDAGE) at times considered LITTLE LORD FAUNTLEROY his finest film; with a graceful script by novelist Hugh Walpole, an excellent supporting cast, a buoyant sense of humor, and a gem of a performance from Bartholomew, he may well have been right.

Gaston (Herbert Marshall) and Lily (Miriam Hopkins) are a cunning pair of jewel thieves who share much more than the riches they acquire. A loving bond that unites them accompanies the lovers on every job. A merry Parisian widow (Kay Francis) seems ripe to be plucked by this enamored couple. An unlikely love triangle blooms instead when Gaston falls for the beautiful widow's charms and is left to decide between these two stunning, but vastly different, women. Ernst Lubitsch created films with visual elegance, a razor-sharp wit, and bold sexuality. The "Lubitsch Touch" is most fully evident in this 1932 romantic comedy. Glossy Victor Milner photography, stunning Travis Banton gowns, and suave performances in no way disguise the conniving nature of all parties involved in the film's central love triangle. Nor do the immoral characters hinder the blissful romance. Hilarious dialogue from regular Lubitsch collaborator Samson Raphaelson and co-writer Grover Jones crackles throughout the picture. Flawless in every aspect, this influential work is one of the cinema's greatest romantic comedies.

Here's volume six of this ongoing collection of one of America's all-time favorite stars. Shirley Temple was more than just a cute face on the silver screen, she was a symbol of innocence and carefree days. Plus, as fans know, she was hilarious. Collected here are more of her classic films such as THE STOWAWAY; YOUNG PEOPLE; and both color and black-and-white versions of WEE WILLIE WINKIE, directed by legendary filmmaker John Ford. What better way to take a trip back in Hollywood history than with Shirley Temple, a girl whose charm far outsized her pint-sized stature. In this sweet, romantic comedy of errors set in Paris, Maurice Chevalier plays a poor tailor, Maurice Courtelin, who moves in with nobility when he tries to collect a debt from Vicomte Gilbert de Vareze (Charles Ruggles) who cannot pay. To buy time, de Vareze invites Courtelin to stay with his family, and introduces him as a baron. Courtelin's overwhelming charm soon wins over the entire household, including the alluring Princess Jeanette (Jeanette MacDonald). Though at first skeptical of his pedigree, Princess Jeanette warms to Courtelin - does romance follow? In addition to the superb lead performances, Charles Ruggles and Myna Loy supply steady laughs with their loony caricatures, and Rouben Mamoulian's direction takes full advantage of the talented cast and music provided by Rodgers and Hart. This rollicking musical possesses even more significance given its pre-code status - a film made prior to the institution of the self-censorship of sex, violence and other controversial content that began formally in 1934 and lasted until the late 1960s.

When a group of legendary filmmakers and actors decided to produce a motion picture that would pay tribute to the people of their native England during World War II, the result was this highly entertaining spectacle. A broad, sweeping tale, FOREVER AND A DAY tells the story of a London mansion and its many occupants from 1804 through World War II. In the process, the film also demonstrates how a house--and, by extension, England itself--is able to survive despite war and other outside threats. Most specifically, the film deals with the Trimbles and the Pomfrets, two bickering families who have nonetheless spawned generations of romance between each other's offspring. In a series of flashbacks, the home's entire history is explained, culminating in a union between two more Trimble-Pomfret descendants. With almost 80 characters, 22 screenwriters, and 7 directors--including René Clair, Edmund Goulding, and Frank Lloyd--FOREVER AND A DAY feels like a surprisingly unified work, that can almost certainly be attributed to each contributor's sincere belief in the project. Featuring standout performances from C. Aubrey Smith, Ida Lupino, and Ray Milland, this inspiring drama proves that collaborations under the right conditions--and for the right reasons--can result in works of glowing entertainment.
