"Radio Waves of the '90s: Alternative Rock Hits" (10/22/2002) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Universal Special ProductsSeeing budget compilations of '90s alternative rock might make the people that grew up with it feel old and sad, but not half as sad (or, more likely, confused) as seeing songs like Extreme's power ballad "Hole Hearted" or Ugly Kid Joe's hair metal snark-fest "Everything About You" on Radio Waves of the '90s: Alternative Rock Hits. This foray into pop-metal is a serious flaw in the collection, but fortunately not an entirely fatal one, as it redeems itself with more likely tracks such as the Gin Blossoms' "Follow You Down," Semisonic's "Closing Time," and Del Amitri's "Roll to Me." Despite the somewhat random song selections -- which, puzzlingly, also include Tears for Fears' bombastic, early-'90s single "Break It Down Again" -- the album does manage to feature three of the decade's best and most definitive alternative rock singles: Urge Overkill's surging "Sister Havana," the Cranberries' sweet first single "Linger," and the Stone Roses' "Love Spreads," which sounded somewhat disappointing upon its release but eventually proved to hold its own with the band's best material. A scattered and occasionally wrongheaded collection, Radio Waves of the '90s: Alternative Rock Hits is probably best avoided, despite some of the worthwhile songs it includes. ~ Heather Phares

"Through the 90s: Singles and Unreleased" (05/22/2001) Rock & Pop American Analog Set (The), Emperor JonesRecorded in 1995 & 1999. Includes liner notes by Guy Fidelity. The complexity and intricacy of the American Analog Set's albums betray their skills as a singles band -- while it's highly doubtful any of their 7" singles will ever threaten the top of the Billboard charts, their unique drone pop tone poems translate to the single format with surprising effortlessness, their approach gaining in immediacy what it loses in scope. Borrowing its title from a lyric in The Golden Band's "The Wait" (reprised here as a jingle for AmAnSet's favorite soft drink, "Dr. Pepper"), Through the 1990s: Singles and Unreleased compiles 14 tracks scattered across the group's brief but so far brilliant career, spanning from their first single, 1996's "Diana Slowburner II," to 1999's "The Only Living Boy Around," arguably their catchiest moment to date. Although the disc is above all an exercise in completism -- the alternate versions of cuts like "Magnificent Seventies," "On Our Way," and "It's All About Us" differ only superficially from their original LP versions -- the clutch of uncollected material makes it an essential purchase for fans, although newcomers are advised to seek out From Our Living Room to Yours or The Golden Band first. ~ Jason Ankeny

"Punk Goes 90's" (05/09/2006) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Fearless RecordsThe obvious follow-up to the PUNK GOES 80'S compilation and its similarly-themed companions, PUNK GOES 90'S features new-millennium punk-pop acts like Mae, Copeland, and the Killing Moon tackling Top 40 hits from the previous decade by folks ranging from Alanis Morrissette and the Gin Blossoms to Nine Inch Nails and Nirvana. Highlights include the Plain White T's doing a bubblegum rewrite of Blur's "Song 2" and Anberlin's take on Depeche Mode's stately "Enjoy the Silence."

"Casey Kasem: America's Top 10 Through Years - The 90's" (04/24/2001) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Top Sail ProductionsIncludes liner notes by Merrill Shindler. The '90s installment of Casey Kasem's America's Top 10 series sticks firmly to pop favorites of the decade. But that actually makes it stronger, since it would be hard to sync up, say, Amy Grant's bouncy "Baby Baby" with most of the grunge or alternative movements' heavy hitters. Instead, the comp moves through an engaging mix of adult pop, light club/dance hits, and a few crossovers from the urban charts. There's the two-dimensional groove of C+C Music Factory, Timmy T's cloying high school dance fave "One More Try," and smoother than smooth adult contemporary from Wilson Phillips ("Release Me"), and Taylor Dayne ("Love Will Lead You Back"). En Vogue's "Free Your Mind" roars more than any of the material here, but it fits in nicely with the slow-burning sensuality of the Alannah Myles gem "Black Velvet." Top 10 doesn't travel much deeper than, well, the top ten, but a few of its selections aren't heard as much anymore, granting them deep cut status here. Paula Cole's biggest hit might have been "I Don't Want to Wait," but she first broke through with the dusty Joni Mitchell urgency of "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?" It's included here alongside the energetic, rustic pop of "Roll to Me," by Glasgow's Del Amitri. ~ Johnny Loftus

"Non Stop '90s Rock" (08/21/2001) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Razor & Tie MusicCompilation producers: Craig Balsam, Cliff Chenfeld. 2001 might seem a mite too soon to indulge in '90s nostalgia, but that didn't stop NON STOP 90's ROCK from making its way onto the charts. Now, whether you were there or not you can experience those fanciful, pre-Britney-and-Christina days without the bother of inventing a time travel machine. This compilation sticks mostly to the mainstream end of the post-Nirvana alternative rock sound that reached its apex during the '90s. You get the bouncy jam-rock of Spin Doctors' "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong" the '60s-reverent Van Morrison/Bob Dylan stylings of Counting Crows' "Mr. Jones," and the wistful folk-rock of Mazzy Star's "Fade into You." Sure, you'll have to wade through bandwagon-jumpers like Dog's Eye View and Marcy Playground, but the good stuff--gotta love the Gin Blossoms' power-pop classic "Hey Jealousy"--make it all worthwhile.

Greatasstits collects all of the Nobodys' 7" singles and compilation tracks, as well as a helping of rarities and unreleased tracks. The single "Addicted to Porn" complements the cover photograph of adult film star Taylor Wayne perfectly; it and the album's title give a fair indication of the type of humor the Nobodys favor. ~ Steve Huey

"Mad Dogs and San Franciscans" (03/25/2003) Rock & Pop Mushroom ('90s+), Black BeautyMushroom includes: Erik Pearson (guitar, saxophone); Jon Birdsong (cornet, tuba); Michael Holt (keyboards); Kurt Statham (bass); Patrick O'Hearn Thomas (drums). Additional personnel: Gary Floyd (vocals). Principally recorded at Criteria, Miami, Florida and Olympic, London, England. Personnel: Gary Floyd, Caroleen Beatty (vocals); Jody Pollock (guitar, acoustic guitar); Erik Pearson (guitar, saxophone); Jon Birdsong (cornet, tuba); Carroll Ashby (trombone); Michael Holt (Wurlitzer organ); Kurt Statham (electric bass); Patrick O'Hearn (drums); Dave Mihaly (percussion). Audio Mixers: Pablo Wong; Patrick O'Hearn . Recording information: Criteria Studios, Miami, FL; Muscle Shoals Sound Studios, AL; Olympic, London, England. Director: Patrick O'Hearn . Photographer: Kishin Shinoyama. Arrangers: Clarence Carter; Steppenwolf; Steve Winwood. Not only has Bay Area band Mushroom released a string of excellent recordings of its own psychedelic/Krautrock/soul-jazz jamming, the group has also released two albums and performed with Daevid Allen and backed Kevin Ayers as well. What to do next? Well, after cutting a remake of Eddie Jefferson's "Compared to What?" with vocalist Gary Floyd (the Dicks, Sister Double Happiness), Mushroom decided that an entire album with the powerful vocalist would be the thing. The byproduct is Mad Dogs and San Franciscans, an album that might look like something of an anomaly for both artists on paper, but ends up demonstrating how good these guys really are. With a track list lifted from decades past (for the most part), Floyd and Mushroom tackle tunes by the likes of Curtis Mayfield, Leon Russell, Clarence Carter, and Spirit with drive, gusto, and not a trace of irony. Despite his punk pedigree, Floyd has always been a great rock vocalist, and apparently Mushroom can do just about anything, as the results here are fantastic. The tunes done here are respectful of the originals, but not overly reverential as squelchy keyboard bits remind you that these are not the original versions. There are also a few Mushroom-penned items (with those great Mushroom song titles) to ensure that this is not just a nostalgia trip. Excellent. ~ Sean Westergaard

"Get Down! *" (08/29/2000) Rock & Pop The Hi-Fives (90's), LookoutTaking some of the best elements of the British Invasion of the '60s and uppity pop-punk, the Hi-Fives don't even need to use beaten-to-death catch phrases like "shagadelic" or "oh behave." Rather, with their clean-cut image and three-piece suits Get Down! is a delightful change of pace from all the Bay Area brat punk that Lookout is known for. It's like this album provides the mental image of these guys riding scooters through downtown London while being chased by a swarm of screaming teenage girls. Not quite anything like Hard Day's Night, but still a heck a lot of fun. ~ Mike DaRonco
