"Elvis Country [RCA]" (02/28/2006) Oldies Presley, Elvis, RCA/Sony BMGLiner Note Author: Michael Hill. Recording information: 08/25/1969-02/08/1976. One of three compilations released in early 2006 to showcase the King's versatility as a singer and song stylist, this 20-track set presents many of Elvis Presley's finest forays into country music. While the release's artwork is deceptive--the photos depict a young rockabilly cat, even though the songs here were all recorded between 1969 and '76--many of the tunes are outstanding, with the King easing into a number of "countrypolitan" classics. Highlights include a wonderfully wistful rendition of Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away" and a dreamy, echo-laden version of Fred Rose's "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain." While those looking to venture deeper into this aspect of Presley's material should seek out THE COUNTRY SIDE OF ELVIS, this collection is perfect for listeners looking to make a shorter rural detour.

"Elvis Inspirational" (02/28/2006) Gospel Presley, Elvis, RCA/Sony BMGLiner Note Author: Michael Hill. Recording information: 10/31/1960-12/16/1973. In early 2006, RCA/Sony released three Elvis Presley compilations, each one focusing on a different aspect of the King's catalog. This installment, featuring tracks recorded between 1960 and '76, finds Presley, as the title would suggest, in an inspirational mode. While not expressly gospel, the collection stills offers up songs of hope and faith. Elvis ably takes on classics such as "Amazing Grace" and "Danny Boy," and also shines on more contemporary tunes such as Neil Diamond's gentle "And the Grass Won't Pay No Mind" and Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water," which soars to a thundering finale. An uplifting set that presents Presley in his bold, latter-day voice, ELVIS: INSPIRATIONAL lives up to the grandeur that one would expect from such a collection.

"Love, Elvis" (01/25/2005) Oldies Presley, Elvis, BMG (distributor)Personnel: Holladays, Charles Prescott, Sherrill Nielsen, J.D. Sumner, Rad Robinson, Jon Dodson, Kathy Westmoreland, The Blossoms, The Imperials Quartet, The Jordanaires, The Stamps, The Sweet Inspirations, Ben Speer, Gordon Stoker, Millie Kirkham, Brock Speer (vocals). Liner Note Author: Michael Hill. Recording information: 04/11/1956-04/24/1977. Arrangers: Glen D. Hardin; Glen Spreen; Ken Darby; Bergen White. Does the world really need another Elvis Presley compilation? Well, it does, actually. Unlike some of the more haphazard reissues, LOVE, ELVIS is a collection with a focus, bringing together 24 of the King's best ballads and love songs. It has been done before, but never in such a nice, big, well-chosen chunk. Elvis himself always idolized the cool lounge style of Dean Martin, and while Presley's menacing, sexually charged early rock & roll hits revolutionized popular music, he could also be a seductive crooner with the best of them. LOVE, ELVIS is a stylish, cohesive package that showcases this softer side of the King to full advantage. While some of the later material from the 1970s is no match for timeless classics like "It's Now or Never" and "Love Me Tender," all of the songs fit seamlessly together in an inspired, non-chronological sequence. For a satisfying, romantic Valentine's Day collection, you can't beat LOVE, ELVIS.

"Today [Remaster]" (08/16/1999) Rock & Pop Presley, Elvis, BMG (distributor)Personnel: Elvis Presley (vocals); James Burton, John Wilkinson, Johnny Christopher, Chip Young, Charlie Hodge (guitar); Weldon Myrick (steel guitar); Buddy Spicher (fiddle); Glen Hardin, David Briggs, Tony Brown, Jimmy Gordon (keyboards); Duke Bardwell, Norbert Putnam, Mike Leech (bass); Ronnie Tutt (drums); Voice, Charlie Hodge, Mary Holladay, Ginger Holladay, Millie Kirkham, Lea Berinati (background vocals). Engineers include: Al Pachucki, Mike Shockley. Reissue producer: Chick Crumpacker. Recorded at RCA Studios, Hollywood, California from March 10-13, 1975. Contains 20 bit remastered tracks. A uniformly strong selection of songs and cleaner-than-usual production make TODAY one of Elvis Presley's better '70s studio efforts. From its opening track "T-R-O-U-B-L-E" (later a hit for Travis Tritt), TODAY announces that it is not just another collection of regret-filled ballads from the King. Sure, there are a few torch songs here, but on TODAY the tear-jerkers are balanced out by such up-tempo numbers as "Susan When She Tried," the inspirational "Shake A Hand," and a cover of the Billy Swan hit "I Can Help." On other tracks, Presley transforms the Pointer Sisters' hit "Fairytale" into a two-step and belts out a Tom Jones-like version of the death-row weeper "Green, Green Grass of Home." Throughout, Elvis' crack band sparkles, with guitarist James Burton in particularly fine form. Don't let the nearly identical covers RCA slapped on Presley's Seventies albums fool you: not all Elvis albums from this era are the same. Each has something to recommend it, but TODAY has more than the standard share of highlights.

"Spring Tours '77" (03/22/2004) Rock & Pop Presley, Elvis, Follow That Dream (UK)Since Elvis passed away in 1977, there have been very few recordings of his last year on earth (apart from bootlegs) for fans to savor and enjoy. His final studio album, Moody Blue, featured recordings from 1976, and the 1977 soundtrack to the CBS TV special, Elvis in Concert, just whetted the appetites of fans all over the world searching for Elvis in the prime of his (so-called) decline. The 23 tracks here are all previously unreleased live recordings from his 1977 Spring tours, just months before his death. Those who think that Elvis didn't have it in him at the end should spend some time listening to Spring Tours '77, which includes some rare and sometimes exciting Elvis performances. Okay, so he sleepwalks through "Heartbreak Hotel" and some other early gems, but he'd been sleepwalking through them since his 1968 comeback! There are some older tracks that he has fun with that are certainly worth hearing, including "Trying to Get to You," "Lawdy Miss Clawdy," "Are You Lonesome Tonight" and "Polk Salad Annie," to name a few. His voice was not as strong as it used to be (most noticeably on "Bridge Over Troubled Water"), but his heart and soul remained dedicated to performing. Some of the rambling between the songs is questionable (what frame of mind was he in?), but that just adds to the charm of this release. For an Elvis fan, it's great to hear officially released stereo soundboard recordings from this era, but, better yet, it proves that Elvis was not washed up near the end of his life as so many have suggested. ~ Steve "Spaz" Schnee

"Elvis Is Back" (04/04/2005) Oldies Presley, Elvis, Follow That Dream (UK)This 1999 reissue contains six bonus tracks not on the original release. Personnel: Elvis Presley (vocals, guitar); Hank Garland (guitar, bass); Scotty Moore (guitar); Homer "Boots" Randolph (saxophone); Floyd Cramer (piano); Bob Moore (bass); D.J. Fontana, Buddy Harman (drums); Charlie Hodge (background vocals). The Jordanaires: Gordon Stoker, Neal Matthews, Jr., Hoyt Hawkins, Raymond C. Walker. Producers: Steve Sholes, Chet Atkins. Reissue producers: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Semon. Recorded at RCA Victor Studios, Nashville, Tennessee between March 20, 1960 and April 4, 1960. Originally released on RCA Victor (2231) in April 1960. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. Personnel: Elvis Presley (vocals, guitar); Scotty Moore, Hank Garland (guitar); Homer "Boots" Randolph (saxophone); Floyd Cramer (piano); Bob Moore (bass); D.J. Fontana, Murray Harman (drums). The Jordanaires: Gordon Stoker, Neal Matthews, Jr., Hoyt Hawkins, Raymond C. Walker. Recorded at RCA Victor Studios, Nashville, Tennessee between March 20, 1960 and April 4, 1960. Originally released on RCA Victor (2231) in April 1960. ELVIS IS BACK is a reissue of the first full-length record that Elvis Presley recorded after returning from his famous two-year stint in the U.S. Army. The disc includes a handful of tracks not included on the original, all of which seem just as strong as those that made it onto the vinyl release. The album marks something of a crossroads in The King's career. Whereas such tracks as "Stuck on You" and "Make Me Know It" are of a piece with the kind of pelvis-grinding, R&B-informed tracks that made Elvis a star in the mid-to-late '50s, a cut like "Fame and Fortune" sees the beginnings of a move more toward smoky-voiced balladeering. The song is noteworthy for its occasionally jarring swings of vocal pitch-a technique for which Elvis would later be caricaturized. ELVIS IS BACK also brought forth Elvis' indispensable interpretation of "Are You Lonesome Tonight," a track that makes it difficult for even Elvis' most ardent detractors to question the sincerity of his delivery.

"As Recorded At Madison Square Garden [Remaster]" (11/07/1996) Oldies Presley, Elvis, BMG (distributor)Personnel: Elvis Presley (vocals); James Burton, John Wilkinson (guitar); Charlie Hodge (guitar, vocals); Glen Hardin (piano);Jerry Scheff (bass); Ronnie Tutt (drums); J.D. Sumner & The Stamps, The Sweet Inspiriations, Kathy Westmoreland (background vocals). Reissue producer: Chick Crumpacker. Recorded live at Madison Square Garden, New York on June 10, 1972. Digitally remastered by Dick Baxter (November, 1991, BMG Recording Studios, New York). Japanese version is 20 bit K2 digitally remastered. In June 1972, Elvis Presley returned to New York City for his first performances there since his final appearance on Ed Sullivan's "Talk of the Town" more than 15 years earlier. His shows at Madison Square Garden were, in fact, his first full concerts in New York: during previous visits to the Big Apple, Presley had only performed a few numbers in television studios. Accordingly, Presley's four shows at Madison Square Garden were huge media events. As part of the pre-concert hype, RCA announced that it would release a live album of the concerts one week after the final show. That album, ELVIS AS RECORDED AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN, was recorded during the evening show on Saturday, June 10. The show is typical of Presley's touring show during the Seventies, a mix of early Elvis hits and more contemporary songs popularized by others. Presley tosses off many of his hits, but he throws himself fully into numbers like "The Impossible Dream" (from "Man of La Mancha"), Tony Joe White's hit "Polk Salad Annie" and "American Trilogy," the last of which would become a signature song of his late career. In 1997, RCA released the Saturday afternoon matinee as AN AFTERNOON IN THE GARDEN.

"From Elvis Boulvard Memphis Tennessee [Remaster]" (08/16/1999) Oldies Presley, Elvis, BMG (distributor)Japanese remastered rerelease. Elvis' last studio recordings were made in the den of Graceland, with Presley performing his vocals karaoke-style over previously completed backing tracks. Ten of these tracks, recorded in February 1976, are collected on FROM ELVIS PRESLEY BOULEVARD, MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE. The tone of this album is set by the opening track, "Hurt," a top 10 country hit for the King. Like "Hurt," nearly all the songs on FROM ELVIS PRESLEY BOULEVARD are about loss, regret, sadness, and disappointment. It's easy to read between the lines and find an autobiographical context, to hear in these songs Elvis mourning for his mother, his separation from his wife and daughter, and his deteriorating health and physique. On songs like "Bitter They Are, Harder They Fall," Neil Sedaka's "Solitaire," and the classic tearjerker "Danny Boy," Presley digs down deep and comes up with an armload of emotion. His singing is surprisingly strong too, given that his talents were noticeably diminished by poor health and drug abuse during these years. Other tracks from the Graceland sessions appear on MOODY BLUE, Presley's final studio album.

"Pot Luck [Remaster]" (08/16/1999) Oldies Presley, Elvis, BMG (distributor)Compilation producers: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Semon. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. Digitally remastered by Dennis Ferrante. This Japanese re-release of the album has been 20-bit remastered and contains five additional songs: "I Met Her Today," "She's Not You," "You'll be Gone," "For the Millionth and Last Time," and "Just Tell Her Jim Said Hello." CD contains 5 bonus tracks. With his 1962 album POT LUCK, Elvis Presley--one of the main men who shook the world with the wild thing called rock & roll--moves away from the feral sounds of his youth towards a more polished pop sound. Along with the ripe vocal backgrounds, there's more of a country influence, more of a "shuffle" feel rather than a rockin' sound that dabbled in Latin rhythms and moods. Here, Elvis sounds less brash, more overtly romantic--the song "You'll Be Gone" has more melodramatic angst than an entire season of "Beverly Hills 90210." This isn't to imply that the King's fires were out--he still sings with urgency and conviction on "Gonna Get Back Home Somehow" and the sly '50s R&B-styled (think Ray Charles) "Steppin' Out of Line." If you're looking for Elvis the Wildman Rocker or the Impassioned Rhythm & Blues singer, you must look elsewhere. If you're a thoroughly devoted Elvis fan, take POT LUCK and relax with the King.

"Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis" (08/22/2005) Oldies Presley, Elvis, BMG (distributor)Personnel: Elvis Presley (vocals); Joe Guercio (conductor); James Burton, John Wilkinson, Charlie Hodge (guitars); Glen Hardin (piano); Duke Bardwell (bass); Ronnie Tutt (drums); Kathy Westmoreland, The Sweet Inspirations, J.D. Sumner & The Stamps (background vocals). Engineers: Mike Moran, Gus Mossler, Larry Schnapf, Ronnie Olson. Recorded live at Midsouth Coliseum, Memphis, Tennessee on March 20, 1974. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Japanese limited edition. CD comes in Jpn LP Sleeve. Elvis Presley concerts during the 1970s were generally highly produced spectacles, with both the performer and his backing band constantly pushed to the limit. The results were exhilarating but generally lacking in nuance. Among Presley's recorded concerts of this period, ELVIS RECORDED LIVE ON STAGE IN MEMPHIS is a notable exception. Performing in his hometown for the first time in thirteen years, Presley gives a revealing performance, chatting with the audience, indulging his taste for gospel music with three impassioned (but not overwrought) numbers, and even dipping into his Sun catalog to pull out a killer performance of "Trying to Get to You." Throughout, Presley seems relaxed while still fully focused on the material, singing with the kind of authority he displayed with less frequency as the '70s wore on. A few goofy selections--Olivia Newton John's "Let Me Be There" and Loggins and Messina's "Mama Don't Dance," for example--mar an otherwise perfect set, but the high points, including a funky improvised ending to "Hound Dog" and blistering versions of "My Baby Left Me" and "Lawdy, Miss Clawdy" far outnumber the low points, making this the best of Presley's many live albums.

"For LP Fans Only [Single]" (08/22/2005) Oldies Presley, Elvis, BMG (distributor)A compilation of Sun and early RCA recordings. Digitally remastered by Joe Lopes (February 1989, RCA Recording Studios, New York). THAT'S ALL RIGHT collects some of Elvis preley's key recordings from his tenure at Sun Records, including the groundbreaking title track and "Mystery Train." Japanese remaster in an LP-replica sleeve. CD comes in Jpn LP Sleeve. Yet another Elvis greatest hits package, this time from the good folks at Snapper. If you don't already have another of the millions of Elvis compilations floating around out there, this one certainly wouldn't be bad to pick up; it features 21 tracks from the King, including 'Heartbreak Hotel', 'Blue Suede Shoes' and 'Hound Dog'. Elvis Presley's first commercially released recording, a cover of Arthur Crudup's "That's All Right," was the start of an iconic career and the first salvo in the decades-long rock-&-roll revolution. Released here with its original B-side, Elvis's version of Bill Monroe's "Blue Moon of Kentucky," this CD single also features an alternate version of "That's All Right." By 1959 Elvis Presley had spent a full year in the Army, leaving RCA Records with no fresh material to offer his adoring public. To keep the pump primed, RCA cleaned out its vaults and came up with the material for two albums, FOR LP FANS ONLY and A DATE WITH ELVIS. Tracks for these albums were drawn from Elvis' early Sun recordings, songs from movie soundtracks, extended play records, and singles. FOR LP FANS ONLY, released in February 1959, exposed the general public to a number of Presley's seminal 1954 and 1955 Sun recordings for the first time: these recordings would not appear together on a single non-bootleg release until 1975's SUN SESSIONS. RCA chose to "enhance"--critics would say ruin--the Sun recordings with added reverb, but the power of the performances on "That's All Right," "Mystery Train," "I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone," and "You're A Heartbreaker" shines through nonetheless. Also included is "Poor Boy" (from the "Love Me Tender" soundtrack EP), a torrid cover of Lloyd Price's "Lawdy, Miss Clawdy," and a similarly frenzied run-through of Joe Turner's "Shake, Rattle and Roll." Like many albums of its time, FOR LP FANS ONLY is extremely short, clocking in at just under 24 minutes.

Limited-edition Japanese version with an LP-sleeve reproduction of the original album artwork. CD comes in Jpn LP Sleeve. In 1959, Elvis was in the middle of his two-year military stint. "From Elvis in Memphis" (08/22/2005) Oldies Presley, Elvis, BMG (distributor)Personnel: Elvis Presley (vocals, guitar, piano); Reggie Young (guitar); John Hughey (steel guitar); The Memphis Horns (horns); Bobby Wood (piano); Bobby Emmons (organ); Ed Hollis (harmonica); Mike Leech, Tom Cogbill (bass); Gene Chrisman (drums); Mary Greene, Donna Thatcher, Susan Pilkington, Sonja Montgomery, Mildred Kirkham, Dolores Edgin, Joe Babcock, Hurschel Wiginton (background vocals). Recorded at American Studios, Memphis, Tennessee in January & February 1969. Includes liner notes by Peter Guralnick, Colin Escott. Japanese version features an LP-style slipcase. CD comes in Jpn LP Sleeve. One month after Elvis' 1968 Comeback Special aired on national television, Presley made the most artistically successful recordings of his later career. In January and February of 1969, he held sessions at American Studios in Memphis. Presley was reportedly worried that his recording career was finished, that he had been displaced by newcomers such as the Beatles. Perhaps goaded on by this perception, Presley reached new heights during the American sessions. The material he chose was impassioned, gritty, and bluesy, the complete opposite of the movie songs he had sung for most of the previous decade. A slight case of laryngitis actually improved his performances, lending his voice an appropriate roughness. Many of the best recordings from these sessions appear on FROM ELVIS IN MEMPHIS, including the hit "In the Ghetto." FROM ELVIS IN MEMPHIS demonstrates how thoroughly Presley could remake a song to suit his talents, especially on the country standards "Long Black Limousine" and "I'll Hold You In My Heart," which he transforms into R&B screamers. This is intense, heartfelt, adult music, much like the blues Presley loved as a kid on Beale Street.

"Christmas Album" (08/22/2005) Oldies Presley, Elvis, BMG (distributor)Japanese limited edition features 12 tracks in a deluxe LP sleeve replica of the original album artwork. CD comes in Jpn LP Sleeve. Now considered among the greatest Christmas albums of all-time, ELVIS' CHRISTMAS ALBUM was originally mired in controversy. When the album was first released in 1957, many Americans considered Presley a menace to society, an amoral hip-shaking freak. The idea of this "punk" profaning Christmas and Christianity (the album, after all, includes four gospel songs) set off the type of uproar most publicists only dream about. Upon hearing Elvis' version of "White Christmas" (actually a close copy of The Drifters' earlier recording), songwriter Irving Berlin mounted a campaign to prevent radio play of the song. Deejays were actually fired for playing the track! Nonetheless, ELVIS' CHRISTMAS ALBUM quickly ascended the pop charts and established itself among the handful of holiday perennials. Whether crooning a solemn classic like "Oh Little Town of Bethlehem" or rocking through "Santa Bring My Baby Back to Me," Elvis is clearly in command of the material, often sounding like he's having the time of his life. RCA reissued the album many times, adding and/or omitting numbers and resequencing the album. The original twelve-song version, starting with the raucous "Santa Claus is Back in Town" and ending with "It Is No Secret (What God Can Do)," is the best.

Recorded at American Studios, Memphis, Tennessee in January & February 1969. Includes liner notes by Peter Guralnick, Colin Escott.
