"Bedtime Story [US CD #1] [Maxi Single]" (03/01/1995) R&B Madonna, Maverick"Bedtime Story," the third single from Madonna's Bedtime Stories album, holds the distinction of being her first U.S. single since her debut, "Everybody," to fail to crack the U.S. Top 40 (the song peaked at 42). It was the follow-up to her immensely popular hit "Take a Bow," and also one of her most adventurous and least-commercial singles. The song was co-written by alterna-goddess Bjork, and, with its electronica undertones, seemed to pre-date the material from her forthcoming Ray of Light album, as opposed to fitting in with the warm, adult-contemporary-laced urban feel of Bedtime Stories. The single comes with seven versions, the first being an edit of the album track. The remixes, however, spin the song into a whole different direction. "Junior's Single Edit," (remixed by Junior Vasquez), which is an edit of "Junior's Wet Dream Mix," sounds much more accessible and radio-friendly than the original. Had it been the official single version, it may have even cracked the Top 40. The "Orbital Mix" sounds even dreamier than the Junior Vasquez remixes, and "Junior's Sound Factory Mix" is much deeper, at times almost resembling a march. These remixes are pure dancefloor material, at times aggressive, at times ethereal, at times even trance-like. A great single, although not very commercial, but it stays true to its source, which is pure, unadulterated dance music. Also included is a B-side, the R&B album track "Sanctuary." ~ Jose Promis

"Keep It Together (Remixes) [EP]" (12/16/1993) R&B Madonna, Warner Bros. Records (Record Label)Australian remix maxi single, with dub, extended, and instrumental versions. The look was Louise Brooks hot, the sound was influenced by late-1980s go-go, while the message was one best appreciated on a dance floor at three a.m. "Keep It Together" was a lesser-known Madonna release, though no less enjoyable for that, found here in a variety of remixes.

Deeper And Deeper [Single]

"Deeper & Deeper/Secret [Single]" (11/10/1992) R&B Madonna, Maverick"Deeper and Deeper" was the second single released from Madonna's Erotica album. The song, in its regular album form, is a dance epic. The single includes seven versions, which are all club mixes of a song that was a club hit to begin with. This single begins with an edit of the album mix, followed by two stripped-down house mixes (featuring a sample from "Vogue" where "Greta Garbo, Greta Garbo" is repeated throughout the song). The fourth mix is a basically the extended album version, which, in the breakdown, substitutes piano for the Spanish guitars. The fifth and sixth versions are dub mixes, while the seventh is little more than a few extra minutes of bonus dub beats, which, in the long run, wind up being somewhat indistinguishable from one another. The mixes don't stray too far from the original's winning recipe, but, with nearly 45 minutes worth of dance beats, one can hardly say this single doesn't satisfy. ~ Jose Promis

Like A Virgin

"Like a Virgin" (10/05/2004) R&B Madonna, Phantom Import DistributionIncludes rare 12" dance remixes previously unavailable on CD. Personnel: Madonna (vocals); Nile Rodgers (guitar, Synclavier); Lenny Pickett (saxophone); Rob Sabino (synthesizer); Bernard Edwards (bass); Tony Thompson (drums); Jimmy Bralower (programming); Curtis King, Frank Simms, George Simms, Brenda King (background vocals). Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (Sterling Sound, New York, New York). Madonna had already made serious waves with her 1983 self-titled debut, springing her irresistibly exuberant, sexy dance-pop onto an unsuspecting public. But it was 1984's LIKE A VIRGIN that exhibited the calculated pop mastery that would define the singer's career. Everything from the cover art (which features Madonna splayed out provocatively in a wedding dress) to the sleek production from Chic's Nile Rogers announced Madonna's arrival as the queen of pop. If only for the album's two gargantuan smash singles, the bouncy, coy, gold-digging ode "Material Girl" and the racy title cut, LIKE A VIRGIN would go down in pop history. The dominating force of both songs, their videos, and their subject matter helped make Madonna a household name. The rest of the album delivers too. The energetic shimmy of "Dress You Up" and "Angel" are infectious dance floor workouts, and her cover of Rose Royce's "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" is sharp and compelling. LIKE A VIRGIN still shines as an indispensable `80s dance-pop classic.

Rescue Me [Single]

"Rescue Me [US Single] [Single]" (04/26/1991) R&B Madonna, Sire Records (USA)"Rescue Me" was Madonna's second single (and one of two new recordings) from her 1990 retrospective Immaculate Collection. It lacked an accompanying music video, yet, as the follow-up to the immensely successful (and controversial) "Justify My Love," received so much airplay that the label released a single, albeit once the airplay had peaked. Therefore, for its time, it had an unusually high debut on the Hot 100, quickly peaked at number nine, then plummeted off the charts. That said, the single, which featured a seductive still from the infamous "Justify My Love" video as its cover art, was issued with five mixes. The first version, the "single mix," is an edit of the album version. The "Titanic Vocal" is an extended mix of the album version, while the "Houseboat Vocal" is more stripped down, utilizing different beats and instrumentation, and bringing a piano into the mix, as well as beginning with a clever sample from her 1986 song "True Blue." The final two mixes (the "Lifeboat" and "S.O.S." mixes) utilize more vicious beats, and the final comes closest to being a dub version, although all keep the vocals more or less intact. These mixes, many years after their original release, hold up surprisingly well, making this single a worthwhile consumer choice for fans and collectors alike, and they provide good examples of what house/pop dance music was like in the early '90s. ~ Jose F. "Confessions on a Dance Floor [Limited]" (12/13/2005) R&B Madonna, Warner Bros. Records (Record Label)1998's RAY OF LIGHT marked Madonna's move toward electronica, and a larger journey back to her dance-club roots. That journey was completed with 2005's CONFESSIONS ON A DANCEFLOOR. A collection of hardcore club tracks with few mainstream pop concessions, CONFESSIONS is packed wall-to-wall with driving, electronica-driven grooves. Madonna has always been one of the reigning queens of postmodern alchemy, and this record is a perfect example of her magic. A primary layer of sleek, old-school disco is combined with pile-driving house and techno, not to mention more than a few contemporary production flourishes. Either directly or indirectly, CONFESSIONS references '70s and early-'80s dance music, including Madonna's own, but while the album seems retro in several areas, it also has a distinct futuristic sheen. Nothing here has the hook-heavy single status of "Material Girl" or "Like A Prayer," but the pulsing intensity of the tracks is sheer sonic pleasure, making Madonna's return to straight-up dance music a welcome homecoming.

"Nothing Really Matters [US Maxi CD Single] [Single]" (04/13/1999) R&B Madonna, Warner Bros. Records (Record Label)Personnel: Madonna. Madonna's fourth and final single from Ray of Light, "Nothing Really Matters" holds the distinction of being her lowest-charting single on the U.S. Hot 100, largely due to the terrible timing of the single's release, which was much after radio and club airplay had peaked. The domestic single packed nine versions, including the somewhat tepid original album version, an amazing 11-minute chill-out transformation by Kruder & Dorfmeister (complete with a climax reminiscent of a James Bond theme), and several club anthem mixes from Club 69 (including a convenient single edit of the "Club 69" mix). Also of interest is the slow-burning "Vikram Remix," which pits the song against Eastern instruments and rhythms, to compelling results. This single is a case of where the production supersedes the song, which in and of itself is among Madonna's simplest and least interesting tunes. The bevy of remixes, however, completely transform the song, and make for an interesting single which, clocking in at nearly 68 minutes, is considerably longer than the average full-length album. ~ Jose Promis

Frozen [Single]

"Frozen/Take a Bow [Single]" (03/17/1998) R&B Madonna, Warner Bros. Records (Record Label)The chilly arctic epic "Frozen" was the first single from Madonna's Ray of Light, the album which finally made her a critic's darling. The maxi-single was issued with four excellent mixes, which helped the song peak at number two on the U.S. charts. The first track is the original album version, which, clocking in at 6:15 minutes, is quite long for the average single. The second track is the masterful, hypnotic Stereo MC's remix, which shuffles forward in an almost trance-like fashion, and is as good as, or better, than the original. The third mix, Victor Calderone's "Extended Club Mix," transforms the otherwise mellow tune into a frenetic, majestic 11-minute dance song whose relentless, pulsating beat keeps the groove going during its various stops and starts. The final track, William Orbit's melancholy "Meltdown Mix," is a dizzying, dreamier, more chilled-out take on the already ice cold song. Each mix does well by the original by adding quite a bit of muscle to the formula. The only thing missing on this disc would be a single edit of the club mix. ~ Jose Promis Madonna's remake of "Fever," from the album Erotica, was released as a single in Europe (hence the review of this French import) but in the U.S. was relegated to the B-side of "Bad Girl." "Fever" did, however, top the American dance charts. The U.S. maxi-single of "Bad Girl" contains most the tracks on this import single, save for an album edit and two others: "Shep's Remedy Dub" and "Murk Boys Miami Mix." The "Shep's Remedy Dub" is just what the title indicates, a dub mix, and the other mix offers the song with a different bassline, but still maintaining its deep house groove. A big disappointment, however, is that neither this single nor "Bad Girl" feature the video version of "Fever," which is arguably the best and is completely unavailable commercially. ~ Jose Promis
