"Pure 80's" (08/10/1999) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Polygram (Japan)Compilation producers: Michael Cohen, Jeff Moskow. Digitally mastered by Suha Gur (Universal Music Group Studios East). Although there's nothing particularly out of the ordinary of Pure 80's, it nevertheless is a good, basic collection of 20 new wave hits, highlighted by such classics as "Hungry Like the Wolf," "Our House," "Relax," "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)," "Video Killed the Radio Star," "Everybody Wants to Rule the World," and Soft Cell's timeless reworking of "Tainted Love." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"Pure 80's Hits" (03/13/2001) Rock & Pop Various Artists, UTVDigitally remastered by Doug Schwartz (Audio Mechanics). "Oh, no!" you might cry. "Not another '80s new wave compilation." Well, set your fears aside. While PURE '80s HITS does include some of the skinny-tie classics included on other collections of '80s hits by the likes of Duran Duran, Simple Minds, and Kim Wilde, the disc takes a broader view of the decade fashion forgot. This feat is accomplished by expanding beyond new wave into the pure pop of Rick Springfield's "Human Touch," post-prog rock in Asia's "Heat of the Moment," blue-eyed soul on Hall & Oates' "You Make My Dreams Come True," and AOR power ballads such as Night Ranger's "Sister Christian." Of course, there are a couple of pop hits here that transcend genre, such as John Waite's "Missing You" and the Plimsouls' Byrds-like "A Million Miles Away," just to give this collection that much more of an edge over the considerable competition.

"See You on the Moon: Songs for Kids of All Ages" (04/04/2006) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Universal DistributionIt can be difficult for indie hipsters to age gracefully under any circumstances, but having kids has an unfortunate habit of sucking your coolness quotient drier than a sand-and-salt smoothie on a summer's day in the Sahara. Rocking out to the Wiggles or Barney is likely to get you mocked mercilessly by your childless friends and, even worse, isn't likely to enrich your children's musical taste. But this compilation from the Toronto-based Paper Bag label features over a dozen critically acclaimed artists whose terrific tunes won't do anything to damage your indie cred. Low's Alan Sparhawk leads things off with the unapologetically silly "Be Nice to People with Lice," a folk ditty lamenting follicle infestation, while Sufjan Stevens' "The Friendly Beasts" is a sweet strummer about the animals present at the birth of Jesus that adds on banjo, vibes, horns, and backing vocals with each passing verse. But not everyone here goes the acoustic route: Montag's "Kiddo 1" matches a children's chant and handclaps with a funky dance beat to create the hippest double-dutch song you've never heard, while Broken Social Scene uses guitar atmospherics to turn "Puff the Magic Dragon" into a trippy thing of otherworldly beauty. Truth is, you don't need to have offspring to appreciate the simple pleasures of a song like Mark Kozelek's melodically charming "Leo and Luna," but if you do, See You on the Moon may go a long way toward turning them into the coolest kids in school. ~ Bret Love

"Casey Kasem Presents: America's Top Ten - The 70's Singer/Songwriters" (05/21/2002) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Top Sail ProductionsIncludes liner notes by Paul Zollo. Liner Note Author: Paul Zollo. A spin-off of Casey Kasem's longstanding radio program, America's Top 10 is another series collecting radio favorites into easily-digestible packages. This particular installment focuses on the singer/songwriter craze of the 1970s. While it doesn't dig very deep, it's packed with hits, making it suitable for the casual fan. Highlights include "It's Too Late" from Carole King ("you were light and breezy and I knew just what to do..."); Rickie Lee Jones' fun "Chuck E.'s in Love"; the fluttery soul of Boz Scaggs' "Lowdown"; and Al Stewart's odd, engulfing classic "Year of the Cat." There are a few deep cuts, notably Phoebe Snow's "Poetry Man," and the slightly ragged folk of Dave Loggins' longing "Please Come to Boston." The booklet includes liner notes and artist photos. ~ Johnny Loftus

Illustrator: John Rummen. Arrangers: Raine Maida; Chantal Kreviazuk. VH1's Save the Music Foundation and Nettwerk came together in fall 2002 to support music education around North America. The various-artists collection For the Kids is a delightful way to do it. The 16-track compilation features an assorted mix of classic children's songs and fresh originals sung by some of modern rock's finest artists. For the Kids presents a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Canadian songstress Sarah McLachlan gets a little froggy in covering The Muppet Show favorite "The Rainbow Connection." This particular track was initially introduced by Kermit the Frog in The Muppet Movie in 1979, but McLachlan's angelic presentation will surely win kids over. Barenaked Ladies and Guster cover Sesame Street favorites, while Five for Fighting's John Ondrasik penned one of the album's most charming moments with "The Hoppity Song." An amazing close to the record comes from blues crooner Tom Waits. Available for the first time, "Bend Down the Branches" is a sweepy bedtime lullaby. Artists like Remy Zero, Ivy, Darius Rucker, and ex-Toad the Wet Sprocket frontman Glen Phillips are also included on this sweet effort. A portion of the proceeds made from For the Kids will go to the VH1 Save the Music Foundation, which has raised more than 21 million dollars for instruments and musical education for 900 public schools in 75 cities across North America since 1997. ~ MacKenzie Wilson

"Pickin' on Keane: A Bluegrass Tribute" (03/14/2006) Country Various Artists, CMH RecordsTributee: Keane. Personnel: Chris Quinn (banjo); Andrew Collins (mandolin). The mid-2000s U.K. pop phenomenon Keane gets its due courtesy of the Pickin' On series, with a well-presented bluegrass reworking of everything off the British band's debut album, 2004's tranquil yet passionate HOPES AND FEARS, save the epic "She Has No Time." Highlights include the haunting version of "We Might As Well Be Strangers," the lightning-fast picking of "Sunshine," and the solitary, melancholy fiddle of "Untitled 1."

"The Concert for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" (09/17/1996) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Columbia (USA)Proceeds from THE CONCERT FOR THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME will benefit the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame and Museum. Recorded live at the Cleveland Municipal Stadium, Cleveland, Ohio on September 2, 1995. Includes liner notes by David Wild. Booker T & The MG's' "Green Onions" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. Al Green's "A Change Is Gonna Come" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. On Labor Day weekend of 1995, a gaggle of Rock And Roll Hall Of Famers joined with a group of younger artists to inaugurate the Hall Of Fame Museum in Cleveland. With Booker T and the MG's as the house band and a roster of some of the greatest performers in rock and roll history, it was an event that will be remembered forever, especially with the help of this 2-disc chronicle of the concert. Not surprisingly, the old timers make the biggest impact, with Jerry Lee Lewis exerting his rocking authority on "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On," and Sam Moore of Sam & Dave dishing out some deep soul on "Hold On I'm Coming." Other highlights include Al Green's spine-tingling rendition of the Sam Cooke classic "A Change Is Gonna Come," and the understated cool of Booker T & the MG's as they step into the spotlight for a lowdown "Green Onions." As this 28-song document proves beyond a shadow of a doubt, rock and roll is here to stay.

"Boys on Top: Punk Rock Tribute to Avril Lavigne" (10/26/2004) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Vitamin Records (USA)Photographer: Valerie Aiello. Boys on Top: Punk Rock Tribute to Avril Lavigne finds a collection of up-and-comers tearing into highlights from the punky pop princess's two full-length albums. Since Avril's music is made with the help of professional songwriters and producers -- giving it a slick, nothing-out-of-place quality -- it's interesting to hear what happens to "I'm With You" or "Things I'll Never Say" in the grittier context of your local punk-pop combo. For its part, Denver Harbor does a great job with "I'm With You"'s dynamics. Near Miss has fun playing the pronouns of "Don't Tell Me" straight, and knows to leave the song's enormous chorus as is. Remik transforms the half-time lilt of "Complicated" into an energetic, New Found Glory-style rocker complete with pogo-worthy chorus breakdowns, and Small Victory scraps the soft harmonies and synthesizer backgrounds of Let Go's "Tomorrow" in favor of an ambitious, guitar-heavy arrangement that shows off Mark Walker's vocal. Not everything here works as well. Life With Jonas can't really find the groove of "Sk8er Boi" -- the original's whining guitar hook is lost amid a crush of rhythm guitar chug. And while M.O.R.'s attempt to turn "My Happy Ending" into an urgent emo ballad is admirable, it fails because you're waiting for the kick-in that never comes. Still, despite a few weak spots, Boys on Top generally succeeds at giving Avril a run for her punk-pop money. ~ Johnny Loftus

"Casey Kasem Presents: America's Top Ten - The 70's Classic Rock's Greatest Hits" (05/20/2003) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Top Sail ProductionsIncludes liner notes by Alan Di Perna. Liner Note Author: Alan Di Perna. This is an average collection of classic rock radio hits from the '70s. The only difference between this and a host of similar classic rock compilations is Casey Kasem's name attached to it. Among the 20 tracks are "Smoke on the Water," "Fly Like an Eagle," "Come Sail Away," and "Sweet Home Alabama." While most of these songs fit the "classic rock" scheme, "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)," "Nights in White Satin," and "Cover of the Rolling Stone" may be a bit of a stretch. ~ Al Campbell

Musical explorers Henry Kaiser and David Lindley made a trip to the island nation of Madagascar in the early nineties. Collaborating with numerous stellar musicians there, it led to a series of joint releases, as well as some additional solo albums (a total of five CDs from two weeks of recording). A successful trip indeed! A WORLD OUT OF TIME helped introduce fans of Kaiser and Lindley to the music of this country. Playing accompanying roles, the two Americans are unmistakable when they solo, but for the most part, the spotlight is on the assorted masters they came to meet and record. The set encompasses everything from the native sodona (a Malagasy flute), to bracingly original electric guitarists. Some of the performers were already popular recordings artists in their homeland, others were making their recording debuts (most notable among the latter is guitarist D'Gary). This is wonderfully warm and engaging music, full of invention and passion.

"Wonderland: A Winter Solstice Celebration" (10/07/2003) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Signature SoundsIf the mega-department stores put up their holiday displays earlier each year and the average suburban dweller decorates his or her home shortly after Halloween, then it only makes sense for record labels to get a jump-start on the Solstice/Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa season by issuing compilations in October. Now, thanks to Signature, one can listen to a fine collection of holiday songs while he or she drives past tacky storefronts and poorly hung garlands. Wonderland: A Winter Solstice Celebration features a dozen-plus singer/songwriters, most from Signature's fine cadre of artists, performing traditional pieces alongside self-penned ones. Peter Mulvey offers a fresh take on Joni Mitchell's "River," while Pete Nelson delves bravely into another contemporary classic, "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch." The key reason this collection works so well is that these performers seem to go out of their way to bring something new to timeworn pieces like "I Wonder As I Wander" and "I Saw Three Ships." Most of the arrangements are simple and straightforward, combining guitars, fiddles, mandolins, and just a little percussion. Other highlights include Nerissa and Katryna Nields' "Christmas Carol" and Mark Erelli's bouncy "This Ain't No Time of Year to Be Alone." With a nice mix of the new and the familiar, Wonderland: A Winter Solstice Celebration will leave the listener in a mellow mood for the hectic holiday shopping season. Compilations like this one will always be welcome, no matter what time of year they arrive. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

"Yes New York [PA]" (06/03/2003) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Wolfgang MordenIf the band you're in is tired of fending off accusations of being too much of a throwback, with nothing to contribute that's remotely modern, the last thing you'd want to do is appear on a compilation with several other bands who are in the same predicament. Even worse would be appearing with these bands on a compilation that takes its name from a semilegendary compilation released decades prior. So go figure. At any rate, most of the 16 bands on Yes New York -- featuring a title and graphic design that deliberately references 1978's No New York, the no wave scene's definitive (if flawed) documentation -- contribute previously released or leftover songs that prevent the disc from being an event. Interpol's "NYC," Radio 4's "Save Your City," Ted Leo & the Pharmacists' "The Ballad of the Sin Eater," Calla's "Strangler," the Walkmen's "Rue the Day," the Rapture's "Olio," and several others were already available on the groups' respective LPs -- so this is a lot closer to the type of compilation you'd get with an issue of CMJ than something special. Given time, it will become the type of disc that can be found in every used bin the United States. ~ Andy Kellman
