In 2002, Sony served up a two-fer of Nashville Skyline and John Wesley Harding. Neither are remastered and there are no frills or bonus material, but it's a good way to get these classics at a reasonable price. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Vol. 4 of Columbia's Bob Dylan lazily constructed "three-fer" series contains the label's 2003 reissues of Nashville Skyline, John Wesley Harding, and New Morning -- the latter has yet to be reissued or remastered and appears here in its original mid-'80s Columbia House-style format -- in their entirety. All three discs feature the same tracks in the same order that appear on the individual releases, as well as their accompanying liner notes. This collection is only notable for its lack of a jewel case, as each reissue album is roughly the same price if purchased individually. ~ James Christopher Monger Sony repackaged and re-released three of Bob Dylan's country-rock albums from the late '60s -- Nashville Skyline, New Morning and John Wesley Harding -- as a slipcased box set. It's not a bad way to acquire the albums if you don't already own them, but there are no bonus tracks or new packaging or remastering, which means it's of marginal interest to hardcore collectors. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine This 3-CD set highlights both Bob Dylan's retreat from the cauldron of 1960s social unrest and his increasing involvement with country music. 1966's JOHN WESLEY HARDING, his first release after his debilitating motorcycle accident, found the singer's preoccupations more opaque than ever, its unadorned arrangements paving the way for the more obvious country stylings of 1969's NASHVILLE SKYLINE, while 1970's NEW MORNING confirmed the artist's lyrical and musical drift toward gentle domesticity. This three-disc set compiles a trilogy of three of Bob Dylan's most experimental and exciting recordings. Collection, Vol. 4 includes the seminal Nashville Skyline, John Wesley Harding, and New Morning. The first two showcase Dylan in the company of top Nash Vegas session players like Pete Drake, Kenneth Buttrey, and Charlie McCoy, among others, and showcase a more laid-back, folksy, down-home style. Nashville Skyline resulted in the hits "Lay Lady Lay" and the fine "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here with You,"as well as a stellar duet with Johnny Cash on "Girl from the North Country." John Wesley Harding offers some of the songwriter's most memorable and poetic tunes as well, including "I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine," "The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest," "All Along the Watchtower," and "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight." New Morning is something of an anomaly in a season of them, rushed out as it was i
