"Drew's Famous Choppers [Digipak]" (2004) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Turn Up The Music, Inc.No self-respecting chopper owner would settle for these note-for-note renditions of AC/DC's "Back in Black," Guns N' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle," ZZ Top's "Legs," George Thorogood's "Bad to the Bone," Foreigner's "Hot Blooded," and several other hard-rocking backdrops to hard living. In fact, many self-respecting chopper owners would probably kick some ass if they had to hear Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive" in any form. Drew's Hit Crew often plays these songs sloppily and without the spirit of the original versions, so the whole thing is a lost cause, unless you don't own a chopper and want to enjoy the disc in an ironic way. ~ Andy Kellman

"Garden of Eden: Famous Rock & Blues Artists" (03/14/2006) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Collectables RecordsAt first glance, this CD makes no sense. Upon further review, it seems that the idea is to present the early days of a random bunch of musicians. So you get a laid-back surf instrumental from Johnny Winter, a track from Clover (Huey Lewis' first band), a rough-sounding song from a young Janis Joplin, a rockabilly track from B.J. Thomas, and a gospel-style '60s soul number from Foreigner's Lou Gramm. All very interesting, but it doesn't hold up as a listening experience since none of the tracks have any kind of sonic connection. Still a few songs are great: T-Bone Burnett's '60s garage band the Loose Ends do a moody and knife-sharp electric Dylan/Byrds-y song, "He's a Nobody," and Albert Collins' revved-up instrumental "Collins Shuffle" sounds like an Ike Turner cut, which is high praise indeed, and Sleepy LaBeef turns in a hip-shaking tune, "Turn Me Loose," that makes one wonder why he never became a big star. One track in particular is so weird it can't be explained: Edgar Winter doing a very faithful version of "The Girl From Ipanema." All in all, the scattershot nature of the programming make this nothing but a quirky novelty. ~ Tim Sendra
