"Deadwing" (05/10/2005) Rock & Pop Porcupine Tree, DTS EntertainmentThis release contains a music video for Lazarus and EPK "Making The Video". Porcupine Tree: Steven Wilson (vocals, guitar, hammer dulcimer, piano, keyboards, bass guitar); Richard Barbieri (keyboards, synthesizer); Colin Edwin (bass guitar); Gavin Harrison (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Mikael ?kerfeldt (guitar, background vocals); Adrian Belew (guitar). Considering their cinematic scope, it's fitting that the songs on DEADWING were actually inspired by a film script written by Porcupine Tree mastermind Steven Wilson. Not that this should come as any surprise to longtime fans who know the UK act's reputation for churning out epic progressive rock so sonically descriptive that it's practically visual. Porcupine Tree creates works with complex structures that do not alienate or obscure the songs themselves, pieces that are dark and psychedelic without being sinister. On the 12-minute opening title track, weighty guitar riffs and spacious synths immediately recall Nine Inch Nails, but swooping melodic changes give way to ambient passages, making it plain that this is no industrial-rock rip-off. "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here" begins with processed backwards guitar, building into a harmony-fueled crescendo before dropping off completely to reveal sparse picking over loops and clicks. Guests Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth) and Adrian Belew (King Crimson) contribute vocal harmonies and guitar, respectively, and the disc comes enhanced with behind-the-scenes video footage as a bonus feature.

"David Live" (01/10/2006) Rock & Pop Bowie, David, Virgin Records (USA)Personnel: David Bowie (vocals); Earl Slick (guitar); David Sanborn (alto saxophone, flute); Richard Grando (baritone saxophone, flute); Mike Garson (piano, Mellotron); Michael Kamen (electric piano, Moog synthesizer, oboe); Herbie Flowers (bass); Tony Newman (drums); Pablo Rosario (percussion); Gui Andrisano, Warren Peace (background vocals). Recorded live at the Tower Theatre, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 12-15, 1974. Personnel: David Bowie (vocals); Earl Slick (guitar); David Sanborn (flute, alto saxophone); Richard Grando (flute, baritone saxophone); Michael Kamen (oboe, electric piano, Moog synthesizer); Mike Garson (piano, Mellotron); Herbie Flowers (bass guitar); Tony Newman (drums); Pablo Rosario (percussion). When David Bowie recorded what became DAVID LIVE at Philadelphia's Tower Theatre in July 1974, he had fully made the leap from Ziggy Stardust and landed feet-first into the shoes of the Thin White Duke. Despite announcing his retirement from live performance the year before, Bowie seemed no worse for wear fronting a ten-piece directed by future LETHAL WEAPON composer Michael Kamen and featuring new guitarist Earl Slick and horn player David Sanborn. This 2-CD set finds the chameleonic performer mixing in Ziggy-era classics such as "Rock 'N' Roll Suicide" with material from DIAMOND DOGS ("Rebel Rebel," "1984"), ALADDIN SANE ("Cracked Actor") and HUNKY DORY ("Changes"). The fullness of the horn section and the style of his back-up band give this set a soulful tilt powered by Slick's ballsy playing. This, along with a cover of the Stax nugget "Knock On Wood," pointed at Bowie's immersion in a Philly soul direction that emerged full-fledged on YOUNG AMERICANS.

"Wild-Eyed Christmas Night, A" (10/22/2002) Rock & Pop .38 Special (Rock), Silverline Records.38 Special includes: Don Barnes (vocals, guitar); Bobby Capps (vocals, keyboards); Donnie Van Zant (vocals); Danny Chauncey (guitar); Larry Junstrom (bass); Scott Meeder (drums, programming); Gary Moffatt (drums). Recorded at Olivia's Castle, Atlanta, Georgia. A Wild-Eyed Christmas Night features Southern rock/arena rock band .38 Special performing a number of holiday classics. The band keeps the music fairly lighthearted and fun, most notably with songs like the title track, "Jingle Bell Rock," and "Santa Claus Is Back in Town." Anyone unfamiliar with .38 Special's music will probably find this album less than interesting, though fanatics will surely find this a pleasant listen. A little brief with only ten songs. ~ Jason Birchmeier

The Mavericks shook up country music in the 1990s with their combination of snappy, neo-traditional honky tonk and un-ironic retro pop-rock styles, and then went on an extended hiatus. 2003's THE MAVERICKS (not to be confused with their eponymous debut album) finds them resuming where they left off--they present a tight, accomplished but heartfelt program of winsome ballads ("A Little Too Lonely"), Cuban-influenced numbers ("Shine A Light"), and classic '70s pop (a lovely cover of the Hollies hit "The Air That I Breathe"). As a bonus, the original "maverick" of country music, Willie Nelson, guests on "Time Goes By." DVD Features: Region 0 Super Jewel Case Audio: 24 Bit/96 Khz PCM Stereo - English 24 Bit/48 Khz Dolby Digital 5.1 - English

"Christmas Time Again" (10/22/2002) Rock & Pop Lynyrd Skynyrd, Silverline RecordsLynyrd Skynyrd: Johnny Van Zant (vocals); Rickey Medlocke, Hughie Thompson (acoustic, electric & slide guitars, background vocals); Gary Rossington (acoustic, electric & slide guitars); Billy Powell (keyboards); Leon Wilkeson (bass); Kenny Arnoff (drums); Dale-Krantz Rossington, Carol Chase (background vocals). Additional personnel includes: Charlie Daniels (vocals, guitar); .38 Special. Producers: Gary Rossington, Johnny Van Zant, Rickey Medlocke, Hughie Thomasson. Recorded at The Castle, Franklin, Tennessee. A Southern rock Christmas album? Hey, it makes as much sense as Run-DMC's "Christmas in Hollis," and the good news is that the Lynyrd Skynyrd boys--along with special guests the Charlie Daniels Band and .38 Special--truly get into the spirit with a nice mix of seasonal standards (rock and otherwise) and originals. Among the latter, the Daniels Band provides a frankly terrifying "Devil Went Down to Georgia"-derived take on "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," while Skynyrd crunch through Chuck Berry's "Run, Rudolph Run" with Stones-like aplomb. On the originals front, .38 Special score big with "Mama's Song," a Southern rock power pop hybrid in their best '80s style, although it must be said that these self-proclaimed wild-eyed Southern boys have a sentimental streak a mile wide (and when their song is followed by Skynyrd's near-obscene "Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin'," it's a tad disconcertin'...). In any case, the album concludes, nicely, with a little harmonizing by the entire Skynyrd family (kids, relatives, road crew, dogs, etc). Fun stuff.

"Frantic / DVD Audio" (04/20/2002) Rock & Pop Ferry, Bryan, Virgin Records (USA)Personnel includes: Bryan Ferry (vocals, harmonica, keyboards); David Williams (guitar, bass); Dave Stewart, Chris Spedding, Adam Lamprell (guitar); Lucy Wilkins, Natalia Bonner, Lucy Theo, Rosie Wetters (strings); Keith Thompson (recorder, crumhorn, curtal); Colin Good (piano, virginal); Brian Eno (keyboards, background vocals); Paul Taylor, Terry Disley (keyboards); Zev Katz (bass); Paul Thompson, Andy Newmark, Bobby Irwin (drums); Sarah Brown, Audrey Wheeler, Stevie De Granville, Nicole Blumberg (background vocals). Producers include: Rhett Davies, Bryan Ferry, Colin Good, Robin Trower, Dave Stewart. Recorded at RAK Studios and Studio One, London, England. German DVD audio edition. Fresh off the 2001 Roxy Music reunion tour, lounge lizard extraordinaire Bryan Ferry offers his eleventh solo outing, the guitar-driven FRANTIC. Aiding Ferry on this surprisingly lively, not un-Roxy-sounding outing is an impressive array of sideman including English guitar hero Chris Spedding, former bandmate Brian Eno, Eurythmic Dave Stewart, and Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood. Helmed by AVALON producer Rhett Davies, this rich-sounding disc benefits from Ferry's penchant for unconventional covers. These range from a pair of stellar Dylan ventures (the rollicking "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" and the piano-driven "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right") to a Leadbelly classic featuring accompaniment by Cajun musicians ("Goodnight Irene"). Equally impressive are Ferry originalsm including his swirling tribute to Marilyn Monroe ("Goddess of Love"), an ethereal tale of romantic woe ("Fool For Love"), and a touch of futurism influenced by French cinema and packed with swooshing synths and airy female vocals ("Hiroshima"). Most exciting is "I Thought," a laid-back Eno/Ferry collaboration that uses a lush bed of keyboards and casually strummed guitar to steadily build up into a righteous closing cut.

"The Boys From Brutalsville" (11/09/2004) Rock & Pop Antiseen, TKO RecordsAntiseen: Jeff Clayton (vocals); Joe Young (guitar); Doug Canipe (bass); Sir Barry Hannibal (drums). Additional personnel: Jamie Hoover (piano, organ). Producers: Jamie Hoover, Sir Barry Hannibal. Recorded at Hooverama, Charlotte, North Carolina. Making punk rock for guys with gun racks in the back of their pick-up trucks, North Carolina scum punks Antiseen were into their third decade of hell-raising by the time of THE BOYS FROM BRUTALSVILLE's 2001 release. The album is packed with monstrous scuzz-bucket riffs, pummeling drum work, and lead singer Jeff Clayton's remorseless, whiskey-soaked rebel yell, making it one of the band's most representative slabs of "destructo rock." If the South does indeed rise again, don't be surprised if this is the soundtrack. (The album was given a deluxe two-disc reissue in 2007, featuring bonus tracks and a DVD with videos and live footage.)
