"The Electronic Tribute to Madonna" (11/15/2005) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Vitamin Records (USA)Personnel: Issa Joone, Carina Norlund (vocals). This set from Vitamin features the label's regular roster of remixers and producers tackling the music of Madonna. The results are iffy. Reworked versions of "Vogue," "Ray of Light," and "Justify My Love" are stylish but not distinctive, like the music you'd hear on the average chillout comp. Which is disappointing, since that means these producers had to really work at deadening these songs' natural vitality. "Beautiful Stranger" is a little better -- the vocalist gets points for channeling Madonna so desperately, and Dynamichrome's production is warm and percussive. And Skip Solder's "Like a Prayer" is worth a curiosity listen, since it turns one of pop's most exuberant singles ever into a solemn meditation on Enigma-like navel-gazing. ~ Johnny Loftus

"Estonian Female Snipers [EP] [EP]" (06/24/2003) Rock & Pop Fortress Madonna, Laughing Outlaw RecordsWhen mysterious front man Alexander Serikov passed away during a Mt. Kilimanjaro climbing expedition in 2002, the remaining band members of Fortress Madonna decided to follow their stellar debut, One Hundred Beacons, with an EP. Nearly completed before his death, Estonian Female Snipers, named for the near mythical assassins blamed for the deaths of hundreds of Russian soldiers in Chechnya, is a five-song assault on the heart and head. The brooding "Crystals," with its sharp horn section and spooky harmonies, is the obvious centerpiece. The narrator (no formal instrument or writing credits are offered) details the harrowing escape of a young soldier from a gun toting women: "A Russian jumps into the ice-cold water/As the others pray by the river/The air temperature reaches minus 26." "The Andrei Plougar Conspiracy" explores similar territory with a rougher edge and a wicked guitar tone worthy of a Television reference. If it wasn't for the lame Church rip-off "In the Thorns," Estonian Female Snipers would be riveting and devoid of filler. Let's hope the band can retain its singular voice despite its recent hardships. ~ James Christopher Monger

"Confessions On A Dance Floor" (11/15/2005) R&B Madonna, Warner Bros. Records (Record Label)1998's RAY OF LIGHT marked Madonna's move toward electronica, and a larger journey back to her dance-club roots. That journey was completed with 2005's CONFESSIONS ON A DANCEFLOOR. A collection of hardcore club tracks with few mainstream pop concessions, CONFESSIONS is packed wall-to-wall with driving, electronica-driven grooves. Madonna has always been one of the reigning queens of postmodern alchemy, and this record is a perfect example of her magic. A primary layer of sleek, old-school disco is combined with pile-driving house and techno, not to mention more than a few contemporary production flourishes. Either directly or indirectly, CONFESSIONS references '70s and early-'80s dance music, including Madonna's own, but while the album seems retro in several areas, it also has a distinct futuristic sheen. Nothing here has the hook-heavy single status of "Material Girl" or "Like A Prayer," but the pulsing intensity of the tracks is sheer sonic pleasure, making Madonna's return to straight-up dance music a welcome homecoming.

"One Hundred Beacons *" (09/15/2003) Rock & Pop Fortress Madonna, Laughing Outlaw RecordsFortress Madonna includes: Mick Murphy (vocals, guitar); Emily Johnson (vocals); Bill Owen (trumpet); Spencer Jones (bass); Thomas Smith (drums). The debut album from Fortress Madonna is an emotional, politically charged bottle rocket, full of Oasis-like sneering and Posies-like harmonies. Named after a symbol of hope drawn on the back of a map for the German soldiers fighting in Stalingrad, the record exudes defiance reminiscent of early U2. Reluctant leader (and former Russian Olympic gymnast and KGB agent) Alexander Serikov, whose only credit on the record is cello, leads a rotating 11-member band through the beautiful, heartbreaking, and excruciatingly unfair world around him. Serikov, who died in March 2002 while climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, was, to say the least, an enigma. Like Joe Strummer before him, he adopted a religiously global view of society and applied it to his songwriting, all the while leaving a trail of myth that few have been able to piece together. Beginning with "Serikov" (unrelated), a fuzzy, guitar-fueled romp about a real-life World War II vet who ends up freezing to death while begging beneath a Kremlin underpass, the band rips through ten more tunes without abandon. "Speedo Chill" sounds like an angrier James and the brutal "Shine" could be an outtake from Julian Cope's Peggy Suicide. Halfway through, the tunes begin treading water, losing the dangerous ebb and flow of the first six tracks and veering into stale Brit-pop territory before being rescued by the beautiful "Swerve to Collapse." With instrumentation ranging from the standard four-piece rock setup to trumpet, sax, violin, and balalaika, Fortress Madonna is surprisingly lean on the arrangements, enabling them to convey a lyrical presence often underplayed by similar bands. One Hundred Beacons is an ambitious mess, and, unfortunately, an unintended memorial to a mysterious man soon to become a cult hero. ~ James Christopher Monger

"A Tribute to Madonna: Virgin Voices [Box]" (01/14/2003) Electronic Various Artists, CleopatraIncludes liner notes by Dave Thompson, David Richards. Personnel: En Esch, Martin Degville, Kristy Thirsk (vocals); Neal X (guitar, programming); Oskar Paul (programming); Boy George (background vocals). Audio Mixers: Goh Hotoda; Greg Reely; Les Sharma; Neal X; LCD; Shep Pettibone. Audio Remixers: Christopher Lietz; Jurgen Engler; Meeks. Liner Note Author: Dave Thompson . Recording information: Lood Studios, Orlando; Orinoco Studios, London, England; Sugar Shack, San Francisco, CA. Billed as the "Ultimate Collection," A Tribute to Madonna: Virgin Voices packages Cleopatra's two single-disc volumes of the same name in one double-CD set. The same admonishment that accompanied the previous releases applies here: only if you are a die-hard Madonna fan or collector of some of the groups featured is this really necessary. The upside of this gentle warning is that there are a wide variety of performers on these discs. The usual Cleopatra goth gang is here, but other contributors range from the housey sounds of Adeva and James Hardaway to worldbeat diva Ofra Haza. ~ Wade Kergan

"Christina Aguilera" (11/25/2003) Rock & Pop Aguilera, Christina, MaverickPersonnel includes: Christina Aguilera (vocals); Jerry Goldsmith (conductor); Carl Sturken, Travon Potts (various instruments); John Goux, Bruce Watson, Tim Pierce, Michael Thompson, Anthony Mazza, Ali Boudris (guitar); Heather Holley (piano); Robin Thicke, Pro J. (keyboards, synthesizer, bass, drums); Robert Hoffman (keyboards, bass, drum programming); David Frank, Steve Kipner (keyboards, drums); Ron Harris, Paul Rein, Kris Kellow (keyboards, drum programming); Ron Fair (keyboards); John Glaser (Moog synthsizer); Matt Laug (tambourine); Johan Aberg, Eric Anest (drum programming); Guy Roche (programming); Shelly Peiken, Sue Ann Carwell, Evan Rogers (background vocals). Producers include: David Frank, Steve Kipner, Guy Roche, Ron Harris, Aaron Zigman. Engineers include: David Frank, Steve Kipner, Mario Luccy. "Genie In A Bottle" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. "What A Girl Wants" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Personnel includes: Madonna (vocals, guitar); Missy Elliott, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears (vocals); Mirwais Ahmadzai (guitar, programming, background vocals). Christina Aguilera rocketed to the top of the charts with the smash hit "Genie in a Bottle" from this self-titled debut and placed herself among a leading generation of young, multi-talented pop artists. Like fellow performers Britney Spears, J.C. and Justin of 'N Sync, and actress Keri Russell, who stars in the TV show Felicity, Aguilera is a graduate of the New Mickey Mouse Club television program. Songs such as "What a Girl Wants" with its guitar-driven melody, and the soulful gospel strain of "So Emotional" show Christina Aguilera's polish. Some of the other tracks that stand out are the powerful "I Turn to You," which was written by Diane Warren; "Reflection," which was produced by Matthew Wilder; and the dance floor mover "Love Will Find a Way," from hit makers Carl Sturken and Evan Rogers. Always one for a remix, Madonna follows the AMERICAN LIFE album with an EP that includes alternate mixes of four album tracks. "Nothing Fails (Nevins Mix)" glides along on an acoustic guitar line and skittering, distorted beats, while 1980s revisionists Mount Sims take on "Nobody Knows Me" with a dirty keyboard/vocoder barrage. Finally the Headcleanr rock mixes of "Love Profusion" and "American Life" are energetic, guitar-heavy versions of the originals. Also included on REMIXED & REVISITED is a live recording of the Material Girl's show-stopping 2003 MTV Video Music Awards performance of her "Like a Virgin" and "Hollywood" medley, featuring the additional diva trinity of Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, and Missy Elliott. On "Into the Hollywood Groove," Missy pops by again for a studio fusion of Madonna's "Into the Groove" and the aforementioned "Hollywood." Topping everything off is the previously unreleased "You Honesty," a buoyant, funky track from the BEDTIME STORIES sessions.

"Music" (09/18/2000) Electronic Madonna, Warner Bros. Records (Record Label)Producers: Mirwais Ahmadzai, William Orbit, Guy Sigworth, Mark "Spike" Stent, Talvin Singh. Recorded at Sarm East and Sarm West, London, England; Guerilla Beach, Los Angeles, California; The Hit Factory, New York, New York. MUSIC won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Recording Package. The album was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album. "Music" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award in the categories of Record Of The Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. MUSIC is international pop star Madonna's 12th release and features "Music" and extra tracks "Cyberraga" and "American Pie." CD contains 2 bonus tracks. With MUSIC, Madonna expands upon the electronic advances made on her previous album, RAY OF LIGHT. RAY producer William Orbit is back on board, joined by French artiste electronique Mirwais Ahmadzai. Both men aid Madonna in pursuing ever more sophisticated electronic soundscapes. The accent here is squarely on club-oriented dance music, as propulsive electronic beats and percolating synthesizers power such pure-pop confections as the title tune and "Runaway Lover." Even Madonna's voice undergoes a fair amount of electronic modification, as on the moody "Nobody's Perfect" which bears a hook that hinges on the same vocoder effect that endeared millions to Cher's "Believe." There's another side to MUSIC, though. While Orbit and Ahmadzai maintain the sonic thread of loops and samples throughout the album, several songs leave the party atmosphere behind in favor of a more melancholy, balladic approach. "I Deserve It," "Gone," and "Don't Tell Me" are pushed along by drum loops, but are based around acoustic guitar, and it's easy to imagine them being performed effectively with nothing more than guitar and voice. While MUSIC pushes Madonna into the future, it allows her to arrive in her new surroundings with the full emotional range of her vision intact.

"The String Quartet Tribute to Madonna" (10/15/2002) Rock & Pop Vitamin String Quartet, Vitamin Records (USA)Tributee: Madonna. Personnel: Pam Jacobson (violin); Tom Tally (viola); Steve Velez (cello). Recording information: White Lantern Studio, Pasadena, CA. Arrangers: Jim McMillen; Marc Riley. Spanning Madonna's entire career over nine songs, The String Quartet Tribute to Madonna is an entertaining, often whimsical look back at some of the most memorable pop songs of the latter 20th century. Performed instrumentally on violin, viola, cello, and bass, the arrangements stick closely to the originals, often simply replacing the vocal line with a violin. Often, the instruments will emulate specific sounds from the songs. For instance, the high-pitched squeals that drop between lyrical couplets in the verses of "Material Girl" are specific to that song and imprinted on listeners' brains. Here, the violinist pricks the strings of her instrument with her bow to achieve the same effect. It makes the performance, as to exclude the squeals would have been to kill the vitality of the song. Elsewhere, reverb is employed to the violin for ethereal effect on "Like a Prayer," "Crazy for You"'s already beautiful melody is accentuated by the warm tones of a cello, and "Ray of Light" is transformed into an outtake from a Bj?rk album (which the original sort of was in the first place). ~ Johnny Loftus

"Truly Blue: Tribute to Madonna" (01/25/2000) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Dressed To Kill (UK)The budget-priced tribute album Truly Blue: A Tribute to Madonna features a number of obscure (and sometimes facetiously named) acts, like Kylie Minow, Knew Order, Abdominal Snowman, and Killer Nannies in America, performing songs from Madonna's ample back catalog of pop hits. Sometimes the album sinks into goofiness and comically poor execution, but that can actually enhance the listenability if you're in the right mood. Plus, there are enough decent takes to make this worth its budget price for some. ~ Steve Huey
