"Mi and l'Au" (10/31/2005) Rock & Pop Mi & l'Au, Young God RecordsMi & l'Au: Mi, L'au. Personnel: Ryan Vanderhoof, Miles Seaton (vocals, guitar, percussion); Paul Cantelon (violin); Julia Kent (cello); David Garland (flute, accordion); Michael Gira (harmonica); Nate Birkey (trumpet). Additional personnel: Julia Kent, Paul Cantelon, Jerome O'Brien, Akron/Family. Audio Mixer: Bryce Goggin. Recording information: Finland (02/2005); Seizure's Place (02/2005). Photographer: Lena Nyman. You can't get much more sparse than the self-titled debut full-length by the French/Finnish duo, Mi & l'Au. But there's good reason for the lack of instrumentation. It turns out that Mi (a model, who represents the French equation) and l'Au (a former music-industry employee, who represents the Finnish equation) live together in a small cabin, in an isolated part of Finland. It was their surroundings that influenced their music, which is usually comprised solely of voice (both split lead vocal duties), acoustic guitar, and a very modest bit or two of additional instrumentation. Interestingly, although the recordings were created in the aforementioned cabin, overdubs were done at a locale that is probably the furthest removed from isolation you can get -- the busy streets of Brooklyn, New York. With all the songs following the same sonic recipe, the 14-track album is best experienced in one sitting -- from front to back -- rather than individual selections. That said, the merger of Mi's voice and orchestral flourishes certainly make tracks like "Older" stand out. If you're looking for music to put you in a mellow mood, Mi and l'Au would be a perfect selection. ~ Greg Prato

"Mi Media Naranja" (11/19/1997) Rock & Pop Labradford, KrankyMI MEDIA NARANJA is Labradford's defining moment. In the reconstructionist spirit of what the media likes to call "post-rock," this Richmond, VA band makes mostly instrumental music that gleefully breaks down stylistic barriers. MI MEDIA NARANJA, the band's most fully realized effort, eschews traditional "rock" song structures, and moves instead toward what could be the soundtrack to some long-lost art film. In fact, film music is an important touchstone here, as the twangy spaghetti-western guitar sound associated with Ennio Morricone is an important element of the sound. That moody, cinematic aesthetic combines with a seemingly Krautrock-inspired use of electronics to create one of the most original sounds of the '90s. For Labradford newcomers, this is the best place to start.

"Mi Innamoravo di Tutto" (07/03/1998) Rock & Pop Andre, Fabrizio De, MSI Music DistributionThe notable late 90s release from the popular Italian singer; includes "Sally" and "Bocca Di Rosa." 1997, Italian import. A good sampler, if at 11 tracks all too brief, of the many different phases of Fabrizio De Andr?'s career, this compilations skips most of the obvious hits for lesser known but equally terrific album tracks such as "Canto del Servo Pastore" or "Coda di Lupo." Its main attraction is the inclusion of a previously unavailable version of De Andr?'s most famous song "La Canzone di Marinella," performed as a live duet with Italy's greatest diva Mina. ~ Mariano Prunes

Personnel includes: Christina Aguilera (vocals); Luis Fonsi (vocals); Tony Concepcion (trumpet); Paul Rein (keyboards, drums, programming); Rudy Perez (keyboards); Julio Hernandez (bass); Johan Aberg (drums, programming); Wendy Pedersen (background vocals). "Pero Me Acuerdo De Ti" was nominated for the 2001 Latin Grammy Award for Record Of The Year. MI REFLEJO won the 2001 Billboard Latin Music Award for Female Pop Album of the Year and for Pop Album of the Year by a New Artist. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Ever since the mainstream acceptance of Latin pop in the late '90s, it's become fairly common for artists who first came to prominence singing in Spanish to put out English-language albums, but MI REFLEJO is one of the few examples of the opposite process. Teen pop goddess Christina Aguilera, who comes from Ecuadorian stock, uses this album as an opportunity to pay homage to her roots. Sure, it doesn't hurt that MI REFLEJO will endear her to a whole new audience, but the singer has professed a desire to do something like this that dates back to her pre-icon days. A few of the tunes here are simply versions of her previous hits--including the breakthrough smash "Genie in a Bottle"--with Spanish lyrics. Most of the album, however, features new songs chosen specifically for this project and recorded with a Latin pop approach in mind. Needless to say, Ricky Martin-loving Latin pop enthusiasts will find as much to enjoy here as diehard Aguilera fans.
