Pig Lib by Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks (CD - 03/18/2003)
"Pig Lib" (03/18/2003) Rock & Pop Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Matador (record label)Initial pressings of PIG LIB included a bonus CD including five tracks. Personnel: Stephen Malkmus (vocals, guitar, synthesizer); Mike Clark (guitar, keyboards); Joanna Bolme (bass, background vocals); John Moen (drums, background vocals). Principally recorded at Bear Creek Studios, Woodinville, Washington between May & August 2002. For his second solo outing after leaving Pavement, Stephen Malkmus expands his musical horizons a bit from his 2001 solo debut, which basically sounded like an extension of his former band's sound. It's only naturally that Malkmus' work should bear some similarities with the output of his erstwhile group, since he played a major role in fashioning their style, and the non-sequitir lyricism and skewed, angular alt-rock that marked the Pavement style are still strongly in evidence. However, there are other elements at work on PIG LIB. Mostly, it sounds like noted music geek Malkmus has been listening to esoteric '70s UK outfits like progressive blues-rockers the Groundhogs and folk-rock cult heroes Steeleye Span (or perhaps Fairport Convention). The knotty, stately guitar lines that twist their way around many of the songs and intertwine with the vocal melodies are redolent of the beard-rock world inhabited by folks like the aforementioned groups. The sound makes a nice fit for the former lo-fi king, providing a refreshing change of pace that's subtle enough not to seem drastic or crass, but substantial enough to suggest that Malkmus's musical growth was not stunted by the death of Pavement.

Pigs of the Roman Empire by The Melvins/Lustmord (CD - 09/01/2006)
"Pigs of the Roman Empire" (09/01/2006) Rock & Pop Melvins (The), Ipecac RecordsThe Melvins/Lustmord: King Buzzo (vocals, guitar, bass guitar, electronics); Adam Jones (guitar); Dale Crover (drums). The Melvins were always the great, unwashed torch-carriers of grunge. On PIGS OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE, the Washington trio collaborates with "doombient" producer/arranger Lustmord for a wonderfully bizarre creation--half-metal/half-sweaty-stoner-rock heating up in a Tool shed, while a dark ambient noise storm whistles through the cracks in its tin walls. As usual, King Buzzo growls and hammers out deranged guitar licks, while Dale Crover's drums seem trapped in a thick mud, and bassist Kevin Rutmanis tries not to self-destruct as he makes noise at the lowest end of the human hearing range. Lustmord (whose other collaborators range from Throbbing Gristle to composer Robert Rich) adds some refreshing ambient bubbles, clanks, and whooshing noises to the Melvins' usual sludge, lightening it until it's almost breathable. By the time Buzz's crunchy metal guitar solo comes swirling on the fumes of methane and burnt rubber in "The Bloated Pope," the truth is out--these sonic psychos are actually highbrow artists in disguise. Just make sure the volume is low for at least the first section of the distorted mega-bomb, "Pink Bat."

Peasants, Pigs, And Astronauts by Kula Shaker (CD - 06/22/1999)
"Peasants, Pigs, And Astronauts" (06/22/1999) Rock & Pop Kula Shaker, Columbia (USA)Kula Shaker: Crispian Mills (vocals, guitar); Jay Darlington (organ); Alonza Bevan (bass); Paul Winterhart (drums). After creating a stir with their debut album K, Kula Shaker follows up with a purposeful upping of the ante on PEASANTS. Like its predecessor, the album brashly melds the cinematic, spacy Britrock sweep of Spiritualized with Middle Eastern melodic touches (the mid-period Beatles are strongly evoked, especially on the flower power epic "Shower Your Love") and the occasional loop-oriented trip-hop touch. The strongest emotional connection for Kula Shaker seems to be with the '60s--heavy organ, choral vocals, Yardbirdsy guitar and harp, it seems like the quartet has learned every trick in the post-'65 rock & roll book and filtered through a harder-edged '90s Britpop orientation. PEASANTS is an ambitious, broad-ranging album, drunk on the driftwood of pop culture and creative enough to make something new of it.
