"Hit List!, Vol. 6: The Best of October 2002" (10/08/2002) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Wonton RecordsContains 10 tracks. The Wonton label's Hit List series is designed and packaged in a way that's appealing to party DJs who have to stay on top of all the current chart action. Each volume is specific enough to focus on the hottest hits of the month in question. However, none of the material in the series is original -- each song on each volume is a poor facsimile. The sixth volume, including versions of songs that were popular in October of 2002 -- "Gangsta Lovin'," "Underneath It All," "Feel It Boy" -- is no worse than any other volume, but it should be avoided at all costs. ~ Andy Kellman

"Original Artist Hit List" (03/25/2003) Rock & Pop Band (The), IntersoundPersonnel: John Hiatt, Rick Danko (vocals, guitar); Levon Helm (vocals, acoustic guitar, mandolin, drums, percussion); Aaron Hurwitz (vocals, accordion, piano, organ); Marty Grebb (vocals, keyboards); Randy Clarlante (vocals, drums, percussion); Bobby Charles, Marie Spinosa (vocals, percussion); Kevin Doherty, Mark Hudson, Amy Helm (vocals); Jimmy Eppard (guitar, mandolin); Eric Clapton, Tom Pacheco (guitar); Jim Weider (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, dobro, mandolin); Garth Hudson (accordion, saxophone, piano, organ, synthesizer, percussion); Richard Bell (accordion, piano, keyboards); Tom "Bones" Malone (tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, trumpet, trombone). Audio Mixer: Aaron Hurwitz. Audio Remasterer: Glenn Meadows. Recording information: Bearsville Sound Studios, Bearsville, NY; Levon Helm's Recording Studio, Woodstock, NY; The ClubHouse, Germantown, NY. A re-ordered version of the Band's 1998 JUBILATION album, this budget-priced set represents exceptional value for money. Rounded out by Randy Ciarlante, Jim Weider and Richard Bell, the Band press ahead with plenty of mandolin, accordion and dobro on a batch of songs that are the aural equivalent of tooling around the backroads of the Deep South. You can almost feel the rhythm of the tracks under your feet as "Last Train To Memphis" chugs along assisted by some of guest guitarist Eric Clapton's tastier playing, while Levon Helm's nasal twang resonates throughout "Kentucky Downpour" and on a duet with John Hiatt on the latter's Celtic-flavored "Bound By Love."

"The Hit List" (01/16/1990) Rock & Pop Jett, Joan, Epic (USA)Joan Jett's hit 1988 solo release, UP YOUR ALLEY, saw the ex-Runaway rocker issue an album less reliant on cover versions of other rockers' songs than many of her previous releases. But on 1990's THE HIT LIST, she released an album comprised entirely of covers. Jett sticks close to the original versions for the most part, especially on the album's biggest hit, a reading of AC/DC's 1976 sleaze anthem "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap." Also featured are expected versions of classics penned by some of Jett's biggest punk heroes--namely the Sex Pistols ("Pretty Vacant") and Jonathan Richman ("Roadrunner USA"), the latter a song Jett had already covered on her '86 release, GOOD MUSIC. While THE HIT LIST failed to successfully continue Jett's newly rekindled commercial success on its release, it remains a fun listen nonetheless.

"Original Artist Hit List" (03/25/2003) Rock & Pop Atlanta Rhythm Section, IntersoundPersonnel: Ronnie Hammond (vocals, background vocals); Barry Bailey (guitar); Steve "Clean" Stone (slide guitar); Dean Daughtry (keyboards); R.J. Veale (drums, percussion); Scott Meeder (drums); Angie Harrison, Jan Smith (background vocals). Audio Mixer: Rodney Mills. Audio Remasterer: Glenn Meadows. Recording information: Tree Sound Studios, Atlanta, GA. One of those bands that sort of fell through the cracks, there are numerous collections out there chronicling the Southern rock history of the Atlanta Rhythm Section. While this set from Intersound might not be as complete as ARS's installment in Polydor's 20th Century Masters series, it will still give the casual fan an effective overview of the group, and provide a few hits. "So Into You" and "Imaginary Lover" are standout tracks that showcase Atlanta Rhythm Section's glossy amalgam of Southern rock and Nashville country. ~ Johnny Loftus
