Love Songs by Phil Collins (CD - 09/28/2004)
"Love Songs" (09/28/2004) Rock & Pop Collins, Phil, Rhino Records (USA)Recording information: 1980 - 2001. This 2004 collection features romantic hits that Phil Collins personally chose from his extensive solo catalog, including the emotive "Against All Odds," the pleading "One More Night," and the gentle "You'll Be in My Heart." However, there are also obscure tunes found here, and these songs make this compilation unique. For example, this two-disc set includes a rehearsal version of Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors," a song Collins often covered in concert during the late 1980s. This R&B-inflected rendition contains a clever vocal arrangement from Amy Keys and Brad Cole that employs rich harmonies, leaving the instrumental accompaniment in the backseat. Another Collins rarity is his live version of the Jerome Kern song "The Way You Look Tonight." Collins's take on this standard avoids being overly sentimental, with Harry Kim's impassioned flugelhorn solo adding a jazzy and sensitive tone. For fans of Collins's softer side, LOVE SONGS is quite a treasure.

Front Parlour Ballads by Richard Thompson (CD - 08/09/2005)
"Front Parlour Ballads" (08/09/2005) Rock & Pop Thompson, Richard, Cooking Vinyl Records (USA)Personnel: Richard Thompson (various instruments); Debra Dobkin (percussion). Recording information: Trellis Sound, Pacific Palisades, CA (2005). The title FRONT PARLOUR BALLADS is an appropriate one for this album. In sharp contrast to many of Richard Thompson's latter-day releases, which feature full-bore pop-informed production, often courtesy of Mitchell Froom, this is a mostly acoustic affair that finds Thompson getting back to his folk roots a bit. Other than sparse percussion, the master guitarist plays everything himself here, which generally amounts to not much more than acoustic and electric guitars and a bit of mandolin. Thompson's pen is as sharp as ever, with literate, carefully crafted lyrics riding atop gorgeous, elegant melodies. Emancipation from pop production also seems to have inspired him to reach back to pre-Tin Pan Alley early-20th-Century modes of songwriting; a number of the tracks here wouldn't sound of place amid the work of Stephen Foster. Some of the more outre compositions lean strongly toward Brecht-Weill artsong territory, broadening the stylistic vistas even further. FRONT PARLOUR BALLADS may not brim with catchy, upbeat hookfests, but it's full of finely wrought material from a bona fide auteur.

Monster Ballads Vol. 2 by Various Artists (CD - 02/20/2001)
"Monster Ballads Vol. 2" (02/20/2001) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Razor & Tie MusicCompilation producers: Craig Balsam, Cliff Chenfeld. Digitally remastered by Elliot Federman (SAJE Sound, New York, New York). Just when you thought '80s visions of designer jeans, Spandex, and leg warmers were fading in the shadow of the new millennium, the good folks at Razor & Tie unearth another batch of Bic-worthy power ballads. Many of the usual suspects from the first collection return, including Poison ("I Won't Forget You"), Firehouse ("Love of a Lifetime"), Winger ("Miles Away"), and Warrant ("Sometimes She Cries"). Among the big names from the glam metal craze making their debut are White Lion ("When the Children Cry"), L.A. Guns ("The Ballad of Jayne"), Faster Pussycat ("House of Pain"), and Stryper ("Honestly"). The net is even cast wide enough to drag in one-hit wonder Alias, bad boy new waver Billy Idol, and classic rock acts REO Speedwagon and Boston. These acts have in common that lightning-in-a-bottle moment where killer guitar solos, mushy lyrics, and layered harmonies came together in songs that appealed to mullet-wearing tough guys, and the big-haired chicks that loved them.

The Ballads by REO Speedwagon (CD - 08/03/1999)
"The Ballads" (08/03/1999) Rock & Pop REO Speedwagon, Legacy RecordingsContains 2 new tracks. REO Speedwagon includes: Kevin Cronin (vocals, acoustic guitar); Dave Amato (electric guitar, background vocals); Neal Doughty (keyboards); Bruce Hall (bass); Bryan Hitt (drums). Producers include: Kevin Cronin, Jim Peterik, Greg Ladanyi, Gary Richrath, Keith Olsen. Compilation producer: Al Quaglieri. Engineers include: Noel Golden, Eddie Delena. Includes liner notes by Kevin Cronin. Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). THE BALLADS is a collection of songs that show off the softer side of REO Speedwagon, a band that was a dominant force on rock and adult contemporary radio throughout the '70s and '80s. Speedwagon took the rock ballad to a new level, and this disc is one that fans of the genre will greet with open arms. "Just for You" is one of two songs in the collection that were recorded in 1998. Co-written by Jim Peterik of Survivor fame, the emotional tune continues the strong tradition of REO ballads. "Time for Me to Fly," a classic from 1977, almost never made it to record but remains one of the group's most enduring songs. Mandatory inclusions such as "Keep on Loving You" and "Can't Fight This Feeling" show the group at its creative and commercial peak. "In My Dreams," from 1986's LIFE AS WE KNOW IT, is a beautiful and underrated composition. "After Tonight" is a tender acoustic number from the 1996 Castle release BUILDING THE BRIDGE. Through the classic and current lineup of the group, Kevin Cronin's powerful vocals have been a mainstay--just one of the many reasons to check out THE BALLADS.
