"Clapton Chronicles: The Best of Eric Clapton" (09/01/1999) Rock & Pop Clapton, Eric, Warner Brothers Records (Argentina)Personnel includes: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar, dobro); Tim Pierce, Darryl Crooks, Robert Cray, Steve Lukather (guitar); Michael Brecker (saxophone); Jon Faddis, Randy Brecker (trumpet); Joe Sample, Greg Phillinganes (piano); Greg Curtis (keyboards, background vocals); Jamie Muhoberac (keyboards); Nathan East (bass, background vocals); Phil Collins (drums, background vocals); Steve Ferrone, Steve Gadd, Jeff Porcaro (drums); Luis Conte, Mike Fasano (percussion); Bumpy, Greg Curtis (programming); Chyna Gordon, Chaka Khan (background vocals). Producers include: Rob Cavallo, Babyface, Eric Clapton, Russ Titleman, Tom Dowd. Engineers: Allen Sides, Brad Gilderman, Alan Douglas. This best-of compilation contains tracks recorded by the rock singer-songwriter and guitarist Eric Clapton. Argentinian version contains an extra cut. CD contains 1 bonus track. It is hard to effectively document in one collection the career of an artist who is as much a vital part of popular music history today as when he reluctantly ventured into a solo career in 1970. CLAPTON CHRONICLES offers an interesting mix of Slowhand's soundtrack-ready acoustic ballads from the '90s and his electric guitar-driven pop-blues from the '80s. "My Father's Eyes" is an emotionally uplifting song about a man's search for his identity through his relationship with his father. "Tears in Heaven," the bittersweet eulogy to Clapton's son, may be his most timeless composition and performance. His groundbreaking "MTV Unplugged" performance produced a new arrangement of his plea to Patti Harrison, "Layla." This approach hinted at a new direction for Eric Clapton's music. Clapton's roots break through on the down-and-dirty Delta blues-tinged "Before You Accuse Me." He stands among very few who have carried their musical heart with them throughout their career and have stayed true to it.

I
"Unwritten" (10/12/2004) Rock & Pop Bedingfield, Natasha, BMG (Argentina)Much less dance-oriented than her brother Daniel's records, Natasha Bedingfield's impressive debut album is closer to a UK version of Kelly Clarkson's similarly masterful sophomore release, BREAKAWAY. Although UNWRITTEN unashamedly has its roots in mainstream chart pop--it's only degrees away from the likes of Jessica and Ashlee Simpson--Bedingfield's strong vocals (alternately flirty and commanding) and personal, quirky lyrics turn songs like "Single" and the title track into frothy but substantial gems, while the soaring opener "These Words" could well be the perfect summer single. Throughout, the production is pleasantly gimmicky, with neat touches like the slide guitar and echoed vocals in the intro of "Silent Movie," and most importantly, the songs don't sound like they've had all the personality focus-grouped out of them in the manner of so many similar records. UNWRITTEN is a startlingly good example of glossy, commercial pop music circa 2005, and a rebuke to those who feel that successful pop records must by definition be irritating fluff.

"Get Born" (06/22/2004) Rock & Pop Jet (Rock), Elektra Records (Argentina)This is a Hyper CD which cotains regular audio tracks and also provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser. Jet: Nic Chester (vocals, guitar); Cameron Muncey (guitar, background vocals); Mark Wilson (harmonica, piano, bass, background vocals); Chris Chester (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: Billy Preston (keyboards). Argentine import version, includes a bonus track. Whenever the proverbial Next Big Thing rolls around, it usually takes a few different bands to push the style into the mainstream. With grunge, Nirvana lit the spark, but it was Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Stone Temple Pilots who convinced everyone the Seattle sound was no fluke. In the case of the New Rock phenomenon, the Strokes brought style and the White Stripes added artiness, but with GET BORN, Jet put all the pieces together. Perhaps the first band of the genre to completely absorb and effectively reconfigure classic rock & roll influences without a trace of winking irony, Jet not only swaggers like the Stones and pouts like Iggy Pop, but injects sorely needed doses of romanticism and variety into a style that otherwise often seems perilously close to oldies revivalism. The most immediate difference between the Australian foursome and their shaggy-haired brethren is the band's talent for soaring sad songs. On the gorgeous "Look What You've Done" and "Radio Song," Jet proves that trashy guitars and neo-garage sneering are not the only way to rock, in the process satisfying both fans of piano-driven ballads and the much edgier NYC sound.

I
"Debut" (09/13/2000) Rock & Pop Bjork, Universal Records (Argentina)Personnel: Bjork (vocals, keyboards); Jon Mallison (guitar); Corki Hale (harp); Oliver Lake (alto saxophone); Gary Barnacle, Mike Mower (horns); Marius De Vries, Paul Waller, Martin Virgo (keyboards, programming); Garry Hughes (keyboards, Hammond organ, programming); Luis Jardim (bass, drums, percussion); Bruce Smith, Nellee Hooper (drums, percussion); Talvin Singh (tabla); Jhelisa Anderson (background vocals). Engineers include: Jim Abbiss, Nellee Hooper, Howie Bernstein. U.K. edition contains the bonus track "Play Dead." With DEBUT, the Icelandic thrush Bjork Godmundsdottir (late of the Sugarcubes) brings her knowing innocence and quirky voice to bear on an engaging program of renegade pop tunes. The unusual instrumental textures on songs such as "Human Behavior," fleshed out with timpani, small percussion instruments, vibraphones and harps, suggests a post-modern version of Phil Spector. As a singer, Bjork's swooping octave leaps and guttural cries betray the elemental contradictions in her music. She projects the girlish innocence and barely constrained sensuality of a wise child, old beyond her years (the techno-reggae romanticism of "Venus As A Boy," the bouncy house changes of "Big Time Sensuality" and "Violently Happy"), and sometimes she sounds like she's trying to rediscover how such doe-eyed love might actually feel, as if for the first time (the mysterious groove of "One Day" and the jazzy standard "Like Someone In Love," with its spare harp accompaniment). There's a pronounced techno feel to DEBUT, with its airy synthesizers and spacious, uncluttered mixes, but without the cool, mechanized detachment of that genre. On "Aeroplane" Bjork combines a saxophone quartet with Middle Eastern-flavored percussion to steer her tale of obsessive love just outside of the pop mainstream, while the unusual saxophone harmonies of "The Anchor Song" lend a folkish color to her extended metaphors on home and erotic immersion. It's precisely Bjork's sense of adventure that gives DEBUT such a cool exotic flavor.

"Best Of Bowie (Argentina)" (11/04/2002) Rock & Pop Bowie, David, EMI Records (Argentina)Personnel includes: David Bowie (vocals, saxophone, keyboards); Mick Jagger (vocals); The Pat Metheny Group, Queen. Producers include: Ken Scott, David Bowie, Tony Visconti, Harry Maslin, Paul Buckmaster. Compilation producers: Nigel Reeve, Jo Brooks. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This edition of BEST OF BOWIE will only be available 12.2.2003-3.31.2004. Includes bonus DVD. Personnel includes: David Bowie, Mick Jagger (vocals); Carlos Alomar (guitar); Luther Vandross (background vocals); The Pat Metheny Group, Queen. Producers include: Nile Rodgers, Gus Dudgeon, Ken Scott, David Bowie, Tony Viconti. Compilation producers: Nigel Reeve, Jo Brooks, Henry Wrenn Meleck. Argentinian version features six bonus tracks. Although not as comprehensive as its two-CD sibling of the same name, the single-disc BEST OF BOWIE serves as an outstanding career-spanning retrospective reflecting the visionary aptitude of a restless creative genius who switched into different musical guises the way some people change suits. These 20 cuts trace David Bowie's path from space-rock folkie ("Space Oddity") and glam god ("Ziggy Stardust") to blue-eyed soulster ("Young Americans") and cutting-edge futurist ("Fashion"). While 21st century kids might be aware of Bowie via a cover by the Wallflowers ("Heroes"), it's equally likely they've heard playlist war-horses like '80s alt-pop classics "Let's Dance," "Modern Love," and "China Girl." Not to be missed are this icon's stellar collaborations with a wide range of talent including John Lennon ("Fame"), Queen ("Under Pressure"), Mick Jagger ("Dancing In The Streets"), and The Pat Metheny Group ("This Is Not America"). Rounded out by the Nine Inch Nails industrial-rock team-up "I'm Afraid Of Americans [V1]," the single-CD BEST OF BOWIE is the perfect overview for fans with merely a passing interest in the Thin White Duke.

I
"The Cure" (07/06/2004) Rock & Pop Cure (The), Universal Records (Argentina)This Argentinian edition includes one bonus track. Although rumors of the Cure's demise circulated after 2000's BLOODFLOWERS, and even frontman Robert Smith claimed the group was finished on numerous occasions, the revered post-punk band remained united, and released this self-titled album in 2004. Expertly timed to follow the excellent JOIN THE DOTS rarities box set and ride a wave of adoration from hip, younger bands, THE CURE marks a new chapter for the goth-rockers, while incorporating many of the quartet's key sonic elements. Though Smith doesn't seem inclined to write lighter pop ditties on par with "The Lovecats" or "Let's Go to Bed," he's still happy to pen gloomy, distortion-filled rock songs and atmospheric mood pieces. Marked by tinges of Middle-Eastern music, the slowly building "Labyrinth" hearkens back to the band's gloriously bleak 1982 album, PORNOGRAPHY. Co-producer Ross Robinson (Korn, Slipknot) makes his presence known by amping up the guitars, most notably on the reverb-heavy "Before Three," the fierce "Us or Them," and the epic closer "The Promise." Of course, Smith can't resist the occasional upbeat melody, particularly on the dynamic single "The End of the World" and the buoyant, keyboard-driven "Taking Off." Twenty-five years after the group's first album, THE CURE sees Smith and his bandmates in fine form and ready to win over another generation of fans.

I
"Radiophonics: 1995 Soundscapes-Vol. 1: Live in Argentina" (05/28/1996) Rock & Pop Fripp, Robert, Discipline Global Mobile1996's RADIOPHONICS is part of Robert Fripp's ongoing Soundscapes project, an attempt to take his Frippertronics system of tape loops and delay into more purely atmospheric realms. Critics can say that all of the Soundscapes albums sound alike, and they do kind of have a point, but careful listening does reveal the differences between the albums. Less intense and emotional than the contemporary A BLESSING OF TEARS and THAT WHICH PASSES, RADIOPHONICS consists of three lengthy pieces, "Radiophonics 1," Radiophonics 2" and the multi-part "Buenos Aires Suite." The two "Radiophonics" consist of overlaid guitar parts with extreme stereo panning effects, making them some of Fripp's most deliberately trippy music. The softer "Buenos Aires Suite" moves through a number of moods and emotions in its four pieces, with the elegantly mournful "Elegy" among Fripp's best ambient works.
