"High as Hell" (05/30/2000) Rock & Pop Nashville Pussy, TVT (USA)Nashville Pussy: Blaine Cartwright (vocals, guitar); Ruyter Suys (guitar); Corey Parks (bass); Jeremy Thompson (drums). Recorded at Studio Litho, Seattle, Washington. Kiss, Motorhead, and Ted Nugent are just a few of the influences that come to mind when a revving motorcycle segues into a driving AC/DC-influenced guitar riff and Nashville Pussy does what it does best; sleazy, high-octane Southern hard rock with attitude to spare. HIGH AS HELL, its second album, delivers the goods, as illustrated by "She's Got the Drugs," with its munching-on-glass vocals and Sid and Nancy-style love story. The title track boasts a foot-stomping, Texas blues-rock groove, while "Go to Hell" puts a new twist on country music heartbreak in a grisly depiction of a man catching his wife in an adulterous affair. "You Ain't Right" finds the song's hero ending a bitter relationship, and Nashville Pussy has fun with handclaps, recalling early Aerosmith, with "Rock and Roll Outlaw." The self-explanatory "Blowjob From a Rattlesnake" tells of a run-in with the law leading to an disagreeable prison stay, while the closest thing to a manifesto comes to life in "Drive," where bad deeds are rationalized as just "...different ideas of fun."

"Fandango [Remaster]" (10/25/1990) Rock & Pop ZZ Top, Warner Bros. Records (Record Label)ZZ Top: Billy Gibbons (vocals, guitar); Dusty Hill (vocals, bass); Frank Beard (drums). FANDANGO, ZZ Top's fourth album, came out after five years of constant touring. With a studio/live format, it contained their first top-40 single ("Tush"). Also available with TRES HOMBRES on 1 cassette and as part of the ZZ Top 6 Pack. This is ZZ Top's fourth album. ZZ Top: Billy Gibbons (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Dusty Hill (vocals, bass guitar); Frank Beard (drums). Recording information: 1975. While ZZ Top's early '70s studio albums were indeed great examples of the blues rock genre, the band's live shows were where the band really shined. On 1975's FANDANGO!, the trio issued an album that contained an 'in-concert' first side and a 'studio' second. This was the album that catapulted ZZ Top to the summit of the '70s rock mountain, mainly due to the rowdy monster hit "Tush," which remains in rotation on rock radio to this day. Other highlights include the entire live turbo-charged first half ("Thunderbird," a cover of Elvis' "Jailhouse Rock," and the near 10-minute long "Backdoor Medley"), as well as the studio rockers "Balinese" and "Heard It on the X."

"The Layla Sessions: 20th Anniversary Edition [Box]" (09/18/1990) Rock & Pop Derek & The Dominos, Polydor (USA)Derek & The Dominos: Eric Clapton (electric & acoustic guitars, vocals), Duane Allman (electric & acoustic guitars, slide guitars), Bobby Whitlock (organ, piano, acoustic guitar, vocals), Carl Radle (bass, percussion), Jim Gordon (drums, piano, percussion). Engineers include: Ron Albert, Steve Rinkoff, Chuck Kirkpatrick. Producers: Tom Dowd, Derek & The Dominos, Bill Levenson. Recorded at Criteria Studios, Miami, Florida from August to October 1970. This box set was digitally remixed and remastered by Bill Levenson and Steve Rinkoff at The Power Station, New York from May to June 1990. Includes a 16-page booklet with session notes, annotations and an essay by Gene Santoro. By digitally remixing and remastering these sessions, the producers have resurrected one of Eric Clapton's greatest achievements, his instrumental and songwriting peak. Musically, Clapton was inspired by his new rhythm section and challenged by fellow guitar hero Duane Allman, whose torrid slide guitar makes blues-blasts like "Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out" and "Key To The Highway" so compelling. And from the classic title song (with drummer Jim Gordon's famous piano coda), to rivetting performances of "Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad," "Have You Ever Loved A Woman," and Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing" each and every metaphor is etched in blood and longing, framed in wailing guitars. Disc 1 is the legendary LAYLA double-LP. The jams which comprise disc 2 illustrate the evolution of the session, while the alternate masters, jams and outtakes on disc 3 will certainly be of interest to casual fans and completists alike. All in all, few rock albums from this era have the staying power and poetic immediacy of LAYLA.

"Some Hearts" (11/15/2005) Rock & Pop Underwood, Carrie, Arista Records (USA)Carrie Underwood: Biff Watson, Bryan Sutton (acoustic guitar); Dann Huff, J.T. Corenflos, Tom Bukovac (electric guitar); Mike Johnson, Paul Franklin (steel guitar); Jonathan Yudkin (dobro, mandolin, fiddle); Adam Steffey (mandolin); Joel Derouin, Sid Page, Roberto Cani, Michael B. Markman, Josefina Vergara, Michele Richards, Susan Chatman, Alyssa J. Park, Mario De Leon, Endre Granat, Julian Hallmark, Tereza Stanislav, Denyse Buffum, Andrew Duckles, Matt Funes, Shanti Randall (violin); Jim VanCleve (fiddle); Suzie Katayama, Larry Corbett, Daniel Smith, Steve Richard (cello); Matt Rollings (piano); Steve Nathan, Charlie Judge (keyboards); Jimmie Lee Sloas (bass instrument); Chris McHugh, Lonnie Wilson (drums); Eric Darken (percussion); Hillary Lindsey, Wes Hightower, Perry Coleman, Morgane Hayes (background vocals). Country purists may take offense at finding American Idol winner Carrie Underwood's debut album in the country section. An unabashedly manufactured commercial product, SOME HEARTS is the sound of mainstream country in the 2000s heavily steeped in glossy pop. There's nothing downhome or roots-conscious about Underwood's voice or looks: she's the pretty blonde next door with a fine singing voice, but the powers that be have made her a country artist, and that's what the public gets. None of this is to say that SOME HEARTS is not a good pop album. The combination of Underwood's considerable gift and the slick, spot-on production of Dan Huff and Mark Bright makes for a fine package. Even on somewhat by-the-numbers tunes (like her smash hit "Inside Your Heaven"), Underwood sings with conviction, and she does well with both the ballads and the uptempo tracks. Idol viewers and fans of artists like Faith Hill and Shania Twain will want to check this out.

"Illinois" (10/01/2005) Rock & Pop Stevens, Sufjan, Asthmatic Kitty RecordsPersonnel: Sufjan Stevens (vocals, various instruments); Craig Montoro (vocals, trumpet); James McAlister (drums); Daniel Smith, Elin Smith (hand claps, background vocals); Matt Morgan, Shara Worden, Katrina Kerns (background vocals). The second entry from sui generis singer/songwriter Sufjan Stevens in his absurdly ambitious project to make a record for every state in America outdistances even 2003's superb GREETINGS FROM MICHIGAN in scope and beauty. A sweeping paean to the Lincoln state, ILLINOIS weaves together history, personal confession, and detail-filled scenarios with chamber folk, expansive orchestral pop, and back-porch pastoral settings for a stunningly progressive indie gem that sound like Brian Wilson, Stereolab, and Neil Young holding hands in heaven. Remarkably, in its intricate, gorgeously crafted surfaces, ILLINOIS lives up to its aims. In addition to its symphonic grandeur, the album also showcases Stevens's heartland folk, and some of the album's most shimmering moments are its most spare. "John Wayne Gacy, Jr.," for instance, is an absorbing narrative that features Stevens's sweet tenor couched by guitar, piano, and backing vocals. "Casimir Pulaski Day," similarly, rides a rootsy banjo and guitar groove while Stevens unfurls image-rich lyrics over a lilting melody. Witty, audacious, and moving, ILLINOIS manages to be spiritual, entertaining, and educational all at once, resulting in an utterly unique conceptual and musical statement.

"Heavier Things" (09/09/2003) Rock & Pop Mayer, John (Rock), Aware/Columbia RecordsThis is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: John Mayer (vocals, guitar); Michael Chaves (guitar); Greg Leisz (lap steel guitar); Dan Higgins (saxophone); Roy Hargrove (trumpet); Jamie Muhoberac (keyboards); J.J. Johnson, Matt Chamberlain, Steve Jordan (drums); Larry Castro (percussion). Recording information: Avatar Studios, New York, New York; Ocean Way, Hollywood, California (2003). With the experience of a Grammy-winning, major-label debut under his belt and the requisite pop stardom that goes with it, John Mayer continues forging a steadily impressive musical canon with his third full-length outing, HEAVIER THINGS. Like the introspective musings of fellow, mellow pop singer-songwriters such as Dave Matthews and Jack Johnson, Mayer's songs delve into the subtleties of relationships and their accompanying navel-gazing. "Bigger Than My Body" finds him not only on a search for self, but sounding like Matthews with his hint of falsetto, as "Something's Missing" does much the same on a bed of swirling guitar and the occasionally chiming chord. As for the fairer sex, there's the requisite pleading found within the confines of the bluesy "Come Back to Bed," and the realization of loving someone with emotional baggage in "Daughters," which stems from childhood issues. All is not entirely dour, however, as this former Berkley School of Music student includes a pair of more up-tempo cuts--"Clarity," the hip-hop-brushed opener featuring jazz great Roy Hargrove and Roots drummer ?uestlove Thompson, and the hook-filled pop nugget "Only Heart." Packed with such emotional heft, it's no wonder John Mayer went with the title HEAVIER THINGS.

"Dick's Picks Volume Twenty-Two" (08/31/2004) Rock & Pop Grateful Dead, Grateful Dead ProductionsDICK'S PICKS VOLUME TWENTY-TWO is the twenty-second in a series of archival live Dead CDs that were overseen by the late Dick Latvala. It differs from the band's "From The Vault" series in that the "Dick's Picks" releases do not feature entire concerts and are mastered from two- and four-track recordings, rather than eight- and sixteen-track recordings. Latvala was the official keeper of the Dead's tape archives; the Grateful Dead organization describes him as "one of the original Dead tapers". Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir (vocals, guitar); Ron "Pigpen" McKernan (vocals, harmonica, organ, percussion); Phil Lesh (vocals, bass); Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann (drums). Recorded live at Kings Beach Bowl, Lake Tahoe, California on February 23 & 24, 1968. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. These West Coast recordings from early 1968 capture the Grateful Dead in raw and rare form. Keyboardist Tom Constanten had not yet joined the group, so his adventurous playing and compositional influence were not yet a factor. Instead, singer Pigpen was still manning the organ. Consequently, the sound ranges closer to the bluesy, hard-edged garage-band sound found on the band's first album. This approach is typified by the crunch of the opener "Viola Lee Blues" and Pigpen's earthy delivery of the Elmore James blues classic "It Hurts Me Too." That said, these recordings don't lack for instrumental flights of fancy. Psychedelic jam vehicles such as "The Eleven" were already in the band's repertoire, and the venerated improv vehicle "Dark Star" makes its live debut here. Jerry Garcia's fleet-fingered guitar expositions shine brightly on these tunes, and bear just as much conviction as his more concise statements on the bluesier selections.

"Filthy Lucre Live" (07/30/1996) Rock & Pop Sex Pistols (The), Virgin Records (USA)The Sex Pistols: Johnny Rotten (vocals); Steve Jones (guitar); Glen Matlock (bass); Paul Cook (drums). Recorded live at Finsbury Park, London, England in June 1996. With the punk-rock seeds they sowed 20 years earlier finally bursting into the mainstream, the Sex Pistols return to cash in. We don't mean that as a knock; we're quite sure, in fact, that's exactly what the Pistols themselves would tell you if you asked. And besides, this document of their 1996 London show (released barely a month after the actual gig) finds the Pistols' original intensity undiminished. Playing all the songs that made them infamous, Johnny Rotten (nee Lydon) and company actually sound more aggressive and driving than they did in their '70s heyday. They're a million miles (and a few singing lessons) from the Las Vegas punk nostalgia act some feared. On classics like "Holidays In The Sun", "Pretty Vacant" and "Anarchy In The UK," the Pistols lay it down with an authority that leaves no doubt as to the authenticity of their reunion. Fans of modern-day punks such as Rancid, Green Day and Offspring will instantly recognize the roots of their heroes in this collection of seminal punk played with all the spirit one could hope for.

Recording information: Louder Studios, San Francisco, California; National Recording, Washington, D.C. A rewarding collaboration between members of the San Francisco metal band the Fucking Champs and the D.C. retro synth-rockers Trans Am, GOLD has the feel of a heavy rock goof-off that has taken on a life of its own. The twin-guitar attack of "Bad Leg" and "Doing Research for an Autobiography" not only references hot-button 1970s bands like Boston and Thin Lizzy, but also fuels a unique sound that's often surprisingly compelling. This imaginative and affectionate mayhem reaches its pinnacle on the mesmerizing "Electrico Gomez," the last piece of the "Gomez" trilogy that closes the set.

"How to Save a Life" (09/13/2005) Rock & Pop Fray (The), Epic (USA)The Fray: Joe King (vocals, guitar); Isaac Slade (vocals, piano); Dave Welsh (guitar); Ben Wysocki (drum). Recording information: Sony Studios, New York, New York; Coupe Studios, Boulder, Colorado; FTM Studios, Lakewood, Colorado; Echo Park, Bloomington, Indiana (2005). This Denver-based quartet mixes the sweeping, arena-ready feel of Coldplay with the sincere, radio-friendly folk-rock of bands like Counting Crows for a highly melodic brand of palatable pop. The Fray's first release, HOW TO SAVE A LIFE, is packed with songs that push all the right mass-appeal buttons: sumptuous piano, swaying mid-tempo rhythms, anthemic choruses, and alternately soaring and meandering melodies sung in a high, emotive voice. Bridging stadium rock, emo, and classic rock on the order of U2, the Fray makes an assured first statement on their debut.

"Repeat When Necessary" (04/16/1991) Rock & Pop Edmunds, Dave, Swan SongREPEAT WHEN NECESSARY is the second release that Dave Edmunds recorded with the band Rockpile (the first was TRACKS ON WAX 4). Though Rockpile only released one album under its own name, it also functioned as the backup band for a handful of releases by both Edmunds and Nick Lowe. One of the finest rock bands to come out of the '70s, Rockpile was a powerful quartet of guitarists Edmunds and Billy Bremner, bass player Lowe and drummer Terry Williams. On this album, Edmunds shows a keen sense for picking the right songs for his voice and for the band's sound. The production is crisp and powerful, with the ensemble sound taking precedence over the framing of individual instruments. REPEAT WHEN NECESSARY is full of great songs and great players--Williams in particular is an underrated marvel throughout.

Recording information: 2004. With 2003's THANKFUL, Kelly Clarkson proved that her AMERICAN IDOL win was no fluke by putting out a solid album of gospel-influenced R&B performed with the panache of a seasoned veteran. In late 2004, the Texas native delivered on the promise of her sophomore record's title, BREAKAWAY, by diving headfirst into alternative-rock-flavored pop of the Avril Lavigne/Michelle Branch variety. Though there are still a few R&B-inspired moments here ("Because of You" is a soulful, string-laced ballad in the best Mariah Carey tradition), most of the album has a much harder edge than fans of THANKFUL would likely expect. In other spots, Clarkson goes the moody chanteuse route, particularly on "Addicted," where she channels the spooky melancholy of Fiona Apple with surprising conviction. Clarkson herself co-writes several songs on the disc, which, combined with the record's unexpected musical variety, suggests a talented vocalist coming into her own as an artist as well as a performer.

A collection of Hans Zimmer movie scores written for five productions, including BEYOND RANGOON, BACKDRAFT, and POINT OF NO RETURN, GOOD MORNING AMERICA showcases the German-born composer's remarkable command of cinematic mood. "1967-1970 (Blue Album)" (10/05/1993) Rock & Pop Beatles (The), Capitol/EMI RecordsThe Beatles: John Lennon, George Harrison (vocals, guitar); Paul McCartney (vocals, piano, bass instrument); Ringo Starr (vocals, drums). Additional personnel include: Billy Preston (organ). The companion piece to the 1962-1966 singles compilation, this set (often called "the blue album," as opposed to its chronological predecessor "the red album"), brings together the Beatles best known songs from 1967 through 1970. The Beatles were fiercely, relentlessly experimental during these years, and the swirling, visionary soundscapes of "Strawberry Fields Forever," which opens the collection, sets the tone with its effects-heavy production and backward tape loops. John Lennon's psychedelic songwriting, which emphasized crystalline melodies and surreal wordplay, can be heard on tracks like "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds" and "Across the Universe." Paul McCartney's fascination with English music hall and novelty numbers is clear on "Penny Lane" and "Ob-la-Di, Ob-la-Da," and the set also has some of his finest ballads, including the mega-hits "Let It Be" and "Hey Jude." George Harrison emerged as a fine songwriting talent during these years with "Something" and "Here Comes the Sun." Yet despite evidence of their diverging individual directions, the Beatles still rock as a band on cuts like "Revolution." (The set includes the single versions of "Revolution," "Lady Madonna," and "Hey Jude"). The Beatles set the tenor of the late-'60s with this spectacular soundtrack, and it remains--even after years of overplaying--original, beautiful music.

"Ten New Songs" (10/09/2001) Rock & Pop Cohen, Leonard, Columbia (USA)Personnel: Leonard Cohen (vocals); Sharon Robinson (vocals, keyboards, synthesizer, programming); Bob Metzger (guitar). The nine-year gap separating THE FUTURE and TEN NEW SONGS was by far the longest in Leonard Cohen's recording career. The surprising thing is that after all that interim time spent on a mountain in Zen meditation (no, really) the tone and outlook of Cohen's work seems hardly altered. Most importantly, his masterful songwriting acumen did not diminish one iota. If anything, Cohen's poetic prowess seems sharper, more focused and concise on 10 NEW SONGS. Sonically, the album continues Cohen's fascination with synthesizers, as first heard on 1988's I'M YOUR MAN. For his first album of the 21st century, he's embraced the digital world fully; nearly every sound is generated by the electronic artillery of Cohen's producer/L.A. cohort Sharon Robinson. There's a polished modesty to the arrangements, always completely subservient to Cohen's richly resonant lyrics and crater-deep voice. Wordwise, Cohen tackles the vagaries of love, the fragile nature of humanity, and the emotional subtext of global politics; typically weighty subjects befitting a man commonly regarded as one of the greatest songpoets of his time. That mantle is duly honored and upheld throughout TEN NEW SONGS.

"This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us in)" (09/21/2004) Rock & Pop Chevelle, Epic (USA)Chevelle: Peter Chevelle (vocals, guitar); Joseph Chevelle (bass guitar); Samuel Chevelle (drums). Following the release of its 1999 debut, POINT #1, Chevelle acquired a more sophisticated sound that can be traced through contributions made to the DAREDEVIL and PUNISHER soundtracks, right up through the metal band's third album, 2004's THIS TYPE OF THINKING (COULD DO US IN). With Peter Chevelle (AKA Loeffler)'s choppy, sinister guitar tones and howling vocals, Chevelle sounds like a distant relative of the Tool/A Perfect Circle family. Throw in the plodding rhythms supplied by his bass-playing brother Joe and their skin-bashing sib Sam, and you have a brooding batch of songs that veers from the moody "The Clincher" and its excellent use of dynamics to the primarily acoustic, but no less compelling, "Bend the Bracket." Not surprisingly, Chevelle has a penchant for writing about some of life's darker subjects, ranging from those struggling to avoid conformity (the relentlessly pounding "Breach Birth") to those who willing embrace it through TV shows like AMERICAN IDOL (a swirling "Get Some"). With THIS TYPE OF THINKING, Chevelle continues to be the standard-bearer of nu metal.

"American Idiot [PA]" (09/21/2004) Rock & Pop Green Day, RepriseThis is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Green Day: Billie Joe Armstrong (vocals, guitar); Mike Dirnt (vocals, bass instrument); Tre Cool (drums). Recording information: Ocean Way Recording, Hollywood, California. Rock opera and punk are usually two mutually exclusive musical styles. Then again, Green Day has never followed any rock rulebook, so it's not entirely surprising that the trio crafted a punk-rock opera that takes the Bush administration and its policies to task. It doesn't get any more pointed than a couplet from the frenetic title cut that states, "I'm not a part of a redneck agenda/Now everybody do the propaganda!" Under the guidance of any other group of agitated punks, the results of such an undertaking could easily become didactic. But with creative spearhead Billie Joe Armstrong at the helm, AMERICAN IDIOT is melodically driven, with the kind of intellectual bent that allows for a pair of mini-operas, "Jesus of Suburbia" and "Homecoming." Trimmed with a light sprinkling of piano and a big guitar sound occasionally reminiscent of Mott the Hoople, the former skewers the hypocrisy that can pervade small-town life. The latter is equally effective, as clever time changes and sonic flourishes (glockenspiel, doo-wop harmonies, honking saxophone) serve as an intriguing counterpoint to the band's hook-laced riffs.

"Fallen" (03/04/2003) Rock & Pop Evanescence, Wind-Up RecordsEvanescence: Amy Lee (vocals); Ben Moody (guitar, percussion, programming). Additional personnel: Paul McCoy (vocals); David Hodges (piano, keyboards, programming); Francesco DiCosmo (bass); Josh Freese, Rocky Gray (drums); Zac Baird, Chris Johnson (programming). Evanescence won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. FALLEN was nominated for Album Of The Year and for Best Rock Album. "Bring Me To Life" won for Best Hard Rock Performance. The song was also nominated for Best Rock Song. Picture Tori Amos fronting Nickelback and you'll get an idea of the sound behind Evanescence, an Arkansas quartet whose introduction to the world came via the DAREDEVIL soundtrack. With its debut FALLEN, Evanescence further pushes the envelope on the aforementioned description, with frontwoman Amy Lee pouring her light-yet-strong vocals into the aggro-rock workout "Bring Me to Life" and industrial trip-hop of "My Last Breath." Although guitarists Ben Moody and John LeCompt leave no riff unplayed on hard-hitting cuts like "Going Under" and "Taking Over Me," Lee brings a nice balance to the table with her gorgeous piano runs, which come to the fore on the very Amos-like "Hello." The perfect balance of hard and soft is met on "Haunted" with its ambient nuance stoked by clattering beats and loops, crunching riffs, and the use of a children's choir. Goth-like in mood yet nu-metal in execution, FALLEN could very well have been where Amos' first group Y Kant Tori Read ended up had they not come along 15 years too soon.

"Under My Skin" (05/25/2004) Rock & Pop Lavigne, Avril, Arista Records (USA)This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel include: Avril Lavigne (vocals); Raine Maida (guitar, keyboards); Ben Moody, Michael Ward (guitar); Evan Taubenfeld (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, drums, background vocals); Butch Walker (electric guitar, keyboards, bass guitar, percussion, programming, background vocals); Patrick Warren (strings, chamberlin, keyboards); Chantal Kreviazuk (piano); Jon O'Brien (keyboards, programming); Josh Freese, Brooks Wackerman (drums). Recording information: 2004. While Avril Lavigne's 2002 debut, LET GO, arrived amidst a tidal wave of teen female performers, the 17-year-old Canadian singer/songwriter managed to distinguish herself with a punk-rock attitude tempered by a hooky pop sensibility. Lavigne's sound reached a remarkably wide audience, even inspiring indie-rock icon Liz Phair to openly pattern her next record after it. With her 2004 follow-up, UNDER MY SKIN, Lavigne makes it clear which side of the pop-rock precipice she's standing on. Instead of pop producers such as the Matrix, Lavigne aligns herself with Our Lady Peace frontman Raine Maida and Linkin Park producer Don Gilmore. The result is a much more complex record--an angst-ridden, soul-searching album that rocks with fury without losing a keen ear for melody. This is clear from the outset with the brooding, lushly orchestrated, guitar-driven opening track "Take Me Away." However, while the music has significantly matured, Lavigne's lyrics still possess the same sense of teenage confusion and frustration so charming on her debut. UNDER MY SKIN is an impressive step for the young songwriter, and it effectively transcends the teen-pop label she inevitably received with her first record.

"A New World Record (Expanded Edition) [Remaster]" (09/12/2006) Rock & Pop Electric Light Orchestra, Legacy RecordingsAlso available in a 3-pack with FACE THE MUSIC and DISCOVERY. Electric Light Orchestra: Jeff Lynne, Bev Bevan, Richard Tandy, Kelly Groucutt, Mik Kaminski, Hugh McDowell, Melvyn Gale. Electric Light Orchestra: Jeff Lynne (vocals, guitar); Kelly Groucutt (vocals, bass guitar); Richard Tandy (guitar, piano, Clavinet, Moog synthesizer); Mik Kaminsky (violin); Hugh McDowall, Melvin Gale (cello); Bev Bevan (drums, percussion, background vocals). Recording information: 1976. 1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. The album even resurrects "Do Ya," a classic single by Lynne's former band, the Move, in a splashy new version. The next ELO album, 1977's elaborate double-album OUT OF THIS WORLD, was probably the band's commercial high point, but A NEW WORLD RECORD is the group's artistic high-water mark.

"B-Sides [PA] [Digipak]" (08/03/2004) Rock & Pop Rice, Damien, Warner Bros. Records (Record Label)Personnel: Damien Rice (vocals, guitar); Lisa Hannigan (vocals); Vyvienne Long (cello); Shane Fitzsimons (bass guitar); Tomo (drums). Recording information: Dublin, Ireland. In the wake of Damien Rice's success with his 2003 debut and the placement of his songs in the Academy Award-nominated film CLOSER, B-SIDES served a stopgap until he was able to roll out a full-length follow-up. The mix of unreleased demos and live cuts that make up this set (all of which were previously unreleased in the United States) gives a peek at the early steps of the Rice creative process. "Volcano," for example, is not only rendered in an instrumental version chock-a-block with darting string arrangements and deftly plucked acoustic guitar, but in its demo form as it was originally recorded directly into a Walkman on December 3, 1997, shortly after it was written. Also noteworthy is "Moody Monday," an ethereal number that swirls and undulates with chanted refrains of the title provided by Rice and background singer Lisa Hannigan. Most striking is the live unplugged version of "Woman Like a Man," which benefits greatly from the composer's duet with the equally airy sounding Hannigan and the deft use of cello accompaniment. B-SIDES ends up being a nice recorded document for anyone wanting to sample the varied compositional talents of Damien Rice.

"The Very Best of Cat Stevens" (03/28/2000) Rock & Pop Stevens, Cat, A&M Records (USA)Producers include: Mike Hurst, Paul Samwell-Smith, Cat Stevens. Compilation producer: Bill Levinson. Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen. Before converting to Islam in 1978, the British-born Cat Stevens blazed the trail for the sensitive singer-songwriter movement that got its start in the earlier part of the decade. Containing both early and late representations of Stevens' impressive canon, VERY BEST OF surpasses the wildly popular GREATEST HITS collection that preceded it. Starting with the more lushly orchestrated material of the late 60s ("Matthew & Son," "The First Cut Is The Deepest" which Rod Stewart turned into a mid-70s hit), this collection captures Stevens' transformation into an introspective artisan who succeeded with a unique brand of folk-pop. Moving from a rumored ode to actress Patti D'Arbanville ("Lady D'Arbanville" featuring flutist Peter Gabriel), Stevens quickly moved into weightier matters of introspection and spirituality ranging from the global ("Wild World," "Peace Train") to the familial ("Father And Son"). In addition to writing about the plight of the younger set ("Where Do The Children Play?") and looking to religious hymns for inspiration ("Morning Has Broken"), Stevens' joyful love of pop emerged on a smash cover of Sam Cooke's "Another Saturday Night." One major highlight is 1970's previously unreleased "I've Got A Thing About Seeing My Grandson Grow Old," a twangy nugget saturated in joy and hope.

"XXX" (03/21/2006) Rock & Pop Chicago, Rhino Records (USA)Chicago: Bill Champlin (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Robert Lamm (vocals, keyboards); Jason Scheff (vocals, electric bass); Keith Howland (guitar, background vocals); Walt Parazaider (woodwinds); Lee Loughnane (trumpet, flugelhorn); James Pankow (trombone); Tris Imboden (drums). Additional personnel: Gary LeVox, Joe Don Rooney, Jay DeMarcus. Though often disparaged by music critics, Chicago maintained a consistent output--and sold millions of records in the process--from their first album in 1969 right into the early 2000s. They dabbled variously in rock, jazz, and R&B before settling into smooth, adult-contemporary fare in the 1980s, becoming staples of MOR radio. 2006's XXX is a return to that MOR sound, with sweet memorable melodies that recall the band's Peter Cetera-led heyday. "King of Might Have Been" is a fine example, finding a place alongside the best of Chicago's mainstream power ballads. "Feel (Hot Single Mix)" traffics a bit in the textures of electronica, but beneath that the sound is, unmistakably, Chicago. The production from Rascal Flatts' member Jay Demarcus is sharp and crisp and brightens the overall sound while showcasing the band's classic elements. XXX is perhaps Chicago's most consistent pop release since 1991's TWENTY 1.

Bands include: Slipknot, Killswitch Engage, Type O Negative, Trivium, Chimaira, Coal Chamber, Machine Head, Fear Factory, Life Of Agony, King Diamond, Cradle Of Filth, VOD, Sepultura, Opeth, Soulfly, Misfits, DevilDriver, Glassjaw, Ill Nino and Obituary. Personnel include: Robert Flynn (vocals, guitars); Keith Caputo (vocals, piano); Glen Benton, King Diamond, Mark Hunter, Max Cavalera, Howard Jones , Daryl Palumbo, Dani Filth, Kyle Thomas (vocals); Dino Cazares, Matthew K. Heafy (guitars); Josh Silver (keyboard, background vocals); Nadja Peulen (electric bass); Joey Jordison (drums). For Roadrunner's 25th anniversary, the pioneering heavy metal/hard rock label came up with a novel concept: four super groups composed of current and former Roadrunner artists, with more Roadrunner alumni guesting on each track. ROADRUNNER UNITED: THE ALL-STAR SESSIONS is the result. Based on core bands led by Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison, ex-Fear Factory guitarist Dino Cazares, Machine Head guitarist/vocalist Robert Flynn, and Trivium leader Matthew Heafy, the album covers a wide swath of aggressive styles, from the proggy thrash/death metal of "Annihilation by the Hands of God" to the old-school stoner boogie grooves of "Blood and Flames."

"A Hangover You Don't Deserve [PA]" (09/14/2004) Rock & Pop Bowling For Soup, Jive Records (USA)This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Bowling For Soup: Jaret Reddick (vocals, guitar); Erik (vocals, bass guitar); Chris (guitar); Gary (drums). Looking at the cover images of a quartet of tattooed, Orange County-style punk rockers, one might be forgiven for assuming that Bowling for Soup is yet another band of Blink 182 wannabes. While A HANGOVER YOU DON'T DESERVE's chugging guitars, high-pitched vocals, tight playing, and rapid tempos are certainly elements common to the music of the Texas-based combo's Southern California brethren, Bowling for Soup's sharp songwriting places it in a different category altogether. With pure pop smarts on par with Fountains of Wayne, lead vocalist/songwriter Jaret Reddick is more inventive than the average neo-punk frontman. Lyrically, Reddick may be the closest thing to his genre's Elvis Costello, spinning out unusually clever observations and oft-hilarious pop-culture references. ("Ohio [Come Back To Texas]" may be the only song in history to name-check Pantera and the twin daughters of George W. Bush in a single line.) A must-listen for fans of both pop-punk and power-pop's humorous sides, A HANGOVER YOU DON'T DESERVE will keep listeners snickering and moshing in equal measure.
