Although there's nothing particularly out of the ordinary of Pure 80's, it nevertheless is a good, basic collection of 20 new wave hits, highlighted by such classics as "Hungry Like the Wolf," "Our House," "Relax," "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)," "Video Killed the Radio Star," "Everybody Wants to Rule the World," and Soft Cell's timeless reworking of "Tainted Love." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"Sounds of the Eighties: 80's Blockbusters [2003]" (05/06/2003) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Time/Life MusicLiner Note Authors: Chris Nelson ; Arion Berger. Photographers: Michael Ochs; Andy Cartlin. Sounds of the Eighties: 80's Blockbusters gathers up 18 big hits from the decade of leg warmers, architecturally challenged hairdos, whopping banks of synthesizers, and one-hit wonders. The tracks are all lightweight and fun, no hard rock or angry punk, no hair metal or rap. There are peppy new wave tracks by the Go-Go's ("Vacation"), Madness ("Our House"), and Toni Basil ("Mickey"); good-natured radio-rock tracks by the J. Geils Band ("Centerfold"), Foreigner ("Urgent"), and Tommy Tutone ("867-5309/Jenny"); and easy listening favorites by Mr. Mister ("Kyrie"), Starship ("Sara"), and Belinda Carlisle ("Mad About You"). The disc plays like 70 minutes' worth of a good '80s oldies radio station and will be the hit of any 20-year high-school reunion party. The packaging could have been a bit more splashy, but hey, it's Time Life after all. ~ Tim Sendra

"'80s Pop Hits [Sony] [Slipcase]" (08/21/2001) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Sony Music Distribution (USA)'80s Pop Hits is a three-disc set from Sony with a heavy emphasis on ballads, many of which continue to be played on adult contemporary radio stations across the U.S. The relatively upbeat material -- like Wham!'s "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go," Toto's "Rosanna," Luther Vandross' "Stop for Love," and Deniece Williams' "Let's Hear It for the Boy" -- tends to be safe enough for waiting-room listening. But it is definitely the slow, soft material (joined by a few power ballads) that takes center-stage: Surface's "Shower Me with Your Love," Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam's "All Cried Out," and Gregory Abbott's "Shake You Down" are some of the inclusions. ~ Andy Kellman

"Pure 80's Love: The #1 Hits" (01/28/2003) Rock & Pop Various Artists, UTVAll tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of UTV Records "Pure 80's" series. Romantically inclined fans of the era of spandex and legwarmers are advised to head straight to PURE '80S LOVE: THE #1 HITS. The wide range of artists represented on this particular collection is an odd assortment to say the very least. New Romantics Spandau Ballet ("True") share space with teen-pop sensation Tiffany ("Could've Been"), Motown hit machine Lionel Richie ("Truly"), and Canadian one-hit wonders Sheriff ("When I'm With You"). Other odd bedfellows include the John Waite/Neal Schon supergroup Bad English ("When I See You Smile"), Aussie MOR stalwarts Air Supply ("All Out of Love"), quirky pop darling Cyndi Lauper ("Time After Time"), folkie vet Dan Fogelberg ("Longer"), and corporate rock giants Foreigner ("I Want To Know What Love Is"). Duets by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes ("Up Where We Belong") and Patti Labelle and Michael McDonald ("On My Own") will have you wondering out loud about why Ann Wilson and Mike Reno didn't land on this eclectic collection.

"Billboard #1s: The '80s" (02/24/2004) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Rhino Records (USA)Compilation producers: Joel Whitburn, David McLees. Includes liner notes by Cory Frye. Audio Remasterers: Dave Schultz; Bill Inglot. Liner Note Author: Cory Frye. Photographers: Lynn Goldsmith; Charlyn Zlotnik; Will Van Overbeek; Neal Preston; Henry Diltz; Stephanie Chernikowski. While perusing the track listing on Rhino's double-disc Billboard #1s: The '80s, you may ask yourself: "Were all 30 of these songs really number one hits? I mean, I know that Mick Jagger's 'Just Another Night' wasn't that big of a hit, and I've never even heard this Joe Walsh song, 'A Life of Illusion'! These can't be number ones on the Hot 100, can they? Aren't they lying here?" Well, if you asked yourself this, the answers are: yes, all 30 songs were number one hits, so Rhino is not lying, but the key is, these weren't all hits on the Hot 100 -- they were number ones on a variety of Billboard charts. Those Jagger and Walsh tracks, for instance, were number one on the mainstream rock chart (as are a full 14 of the 30 songs, actually), while the B-52's' "Love Shack" and the Cure's "Fascination Street" topped the modern rock charts, the Honeydrippers' "Sea of Love" topped the adult contemporary chart, and the rest were genuine number ones on the Hot 100. This talk may all be a bit inside baseball, but it's necessary, since the title of Billboard #1s: The '80s suggests that this would be nothing but the biggest hits of the decade, which it is not (and it's a distinct possibility that licensing restrictions not only prevented big, big hits from the likes of Madonna, Prince, and Michael Jackson from being here, but necessitated the move toward multiple charts, since the compilers needed to fill the space somehow). But, so what? This isn't designed to be complete, or to even have the biggest hits of the entire decade; it's designed to be a cross section of highlights from the '80s and it does a good job at that. As Cory Frye states in the liner notes, the '80s were an "amazingly disparate era," and this disc illustrates that: there's the disco-rock of Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust," the sleek AOR ballad "Waiting for a Girl Like You," the lush retro-vision of the Honeydrippers on "Sea of Love," the stately goth rock of the Cure's "Fascination Street," INXS' tight funky "Need You Tonight," and Tommy Tutone's power pop classic "867-5309/Jenny" (there's also Bruce Hornsby's "The Way It Is," which Frye pegs as "spare and human," which may apply to the lyrics, but "human" is kind of an odd description for a recording that boasts one of the most conspicuous uses of keyboard bass). These may not be the biggest or best songs of the '80s, but they are representative of the decade, as this collection is as a whole, which is what makes it a good listen. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"Pure 80's Hits" (03/13/2001) Rock & Pop Various Artists, UTVDigitally remastered by Doug Schwartz (Audio Mechanics). "Oh, no!" you might cry. "Not another '80s new wave compilation." Well, set your fears aside. While PURE '80s HITS does include some of the skinny-tie classics included on other collections of '80s hits by the likes of Duran Duran, Simple Minds, and Kim Wilde, the disc takes a broader view of the decade fashion forgot. This feat is accomplished by expanding beyond new wave into the pure pop of Rick Springfield's "Human Touch," post-prog rock in Asia's "Heat of the Moment," blue-eyed soul on Hall & Oates' "You Make My Dreams Come True," and AOR power ballads such as Night Ranger's "Sister Christian." Of course, there are a couple of pop hits here that transcend genre, such as John Waite's "Missing You" and the Plimsouls' Byrds-like "A Million Miles Away," just to give this collection that much more of an edge over the considerable competition.

"Then: Totally Oldies '80s, Vol. 5" (04/01/2003) Rock & Pop Various Artists, VarŠse Sarabande (USA)Compilation producers: Cary E. Mansfield, Bryon Davis, Bill Pitzonka. Liner Note Authors: DJ Andy Anderson; Bill Pitzonka. Director: Falco. Arrangers: Ferdi Bolland; Rob Bolland. Then: Totally Oldies '80s is an 18-track collection that rounds up some totally '80s songs. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the track selection; it seems as if the compilers just closed their eyes and picked songs that were hits or close to it at random. A selection process like that is bound to turn up some winners; here listeners have great songs like Rick Springfield's "Jessie's Girl, " Tracey Ullman's "They Don't Know About Us," and Modern English's "I Melt With You." It also produces some strange picks, like Chilliwack's "My Girl (Gone, Gone, Gone)" and Sneaker's "More Than Just the Two of Us." Most of the songs are vaguely new wave, yet there are enough hard rock tracks to spoil the party for new wavers. Ultimately, the totally random feel of the disc limits its success; the tracks just don't sound good mashed together as they are. Despite this flaw, fans of '80s music who don't really care about history or keeping styles separate or any of that music geek stuff may find this disc to be totally cool background music. ~ Tim Sendra

"Chart Toppers: Rock Hits of the 80s" (05/26/1998) Rock & Pop Chart Toppers, Priority Records (USA)This is part of Priority Records' Chart Toppers series. Priority's Chart Toppers series is an excellent budget-line collection, offering a strong selection of 15 original hits, grouped by a specific theme and decade, on each disc. Chart Toppers: Rock Hits of the 80s combines new wave, ska revival, album rock, power pop, prog rock, and pop/rock hits -- an eclectic bunch, to say the least, but the variety helps capture the feeling of the decade. A few of the songs haven't dated well, but for the most part the selection of songs is terrific, albeit a little predictable. Among the highlights on the disc are Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)," Tears for Fears' "Sowing the Seeds of Love," the Fixx's "Saved by Zero," Madness' "Our House," Wang Chung's "Dance Hall Days," Stray Cats' "Rock This Town," Eddie Money's "Take Me Home Tonight," the Hooters' "And We Danced," Gary Numan's "Cars," Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over," Hall & Oates' "Out of Touch," Rick Springfield's "Jessie's Girl," and Styx's "Mr. Roboto." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"VH1: I Love the '80s" (06/29/2004) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Rhino Records (USA)Audio Remasterers: Dan Hersch; Bill Inglot. For pop fans that have been overwhelmed by a goopy wave of nostalgia for skinny ties, spiky haircuts, and sleeveless T-shirts, VH1's I LOVE THE '80s should prove to be the perfect mix. These 14 chart-busting hits cover everything from industry-tailored power-pop (the Knack's "My Sharona") to celebratory anthems from singers with orange hair (Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun"), and will have listeners reaching for their hair gel in no time. The truth is, the 1980s come off looking pretty good--musically speaking--within the bounds of this compilation. Alongside the obligatory feel-good anthems such as Joey Scarbury's "Theme from 'Greatest American Hero' (Believe It or Not)" and Bobby McFerrin's irrepressible "Don't Worry Be Happy," there is a fine sampling of New Wave-influenced sounds. The Vapor's enigmatic "Turning Japanese" still packs a punch, as do "Our House," Madness's kooky masterpiece, and the Waitresses' jerky "Square Pegs." Solid grooves are not overlooked on INXS's "New Sensation" and the B-52's "Love Shack," but the disc's highlights have to be Grandmaster Flash's "The Message" and 'Til Tuesday's truly beautiful "Voices Carry" (superb songs in any decade).

"20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of the 80's" (08/08/2000) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Hip-O RecordsCompilation producers: Pat Lawrence, Mike Ragogna, Dana G. Smart. Includes liner notes by Sara Cody. Digitally remastered by David Schultz (DigiPrep Mastering, Hollywood, California). This is part of MCA's 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection series. The Best Of The '80s: The Millennium Collection attempts to capture the musical trends of the decade in a dozen songs, including the Fixx's "One Thing Leads to Another," the Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star," and Steve Winwood's "Higher Love." Blondie's "Call Me," the Eurhythmics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)," and Soft Cell's "Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go" are some of the album's other highlights. By concentrating on new wave and pop hits rather than trying to document every sound of the '80s, The Best of the '80s may not quite live up to its name, but it does present a fairly cohesive and entertaining mix of some of the decade's catchiest singles. ~ Heather Phares
