The Layla Sessions: 20th Anniversary Edition [Box] by Derek & The Dominos (CD - 09/18/1990)
"The Layla Sessions: 20th Anniversary Edition [Box]" (09/18/1990) Rock & Pop Derek & The Dominos, Polydor (USA)Derek & The Dominos: Eric Clapton (electric & acoustic guitars, vocals), Duane Allman (electric & acoustic guitars, slide guitars), Bobby Whitlock (organ, piano, acoustic guitar, vocals), Carl Radle (bass, percussion), Jim Gordon (drums, piano, percussion). Engineers include: Ron Albert, Steve Rinkoff, Chuck Kirkpatrick. Producers: Tom Dowd, Derek & The Dominos, Bill Levenson. Recorded at Criteria Studios, Miami, Florida from August to October 1970. This box set was digitally remixed and remastered by Bill Levenson and Steve Rinkoff at The Power Station, New York from May to June 1990. Includes a 16-page booklet with session notes, annotations and an essay by Gene Santoro. By digitally remixing and remastering these sessions, the producers have resurrected one of Eric Clapton's greatest achievements, his instrumental and songwriting peak. Musically, Clapton was inspired by his new rhythm section and challenged by fellow guitar hero Duane Allman, whose torrid slide guitar makes blues-blasts like "Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out" and "Key To The Highway" so compelling. And from the classic title song (with drummer Jim Gordon's famous piano coda), to rivetting performances of "Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad," "Have You Ever Loved A Woman," and Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing" each and every metaphor is etched in blood and longing, framed in wailing guitars. Disc 1 is the legendary LAYLA double-LP. The jams which comprise disc 2 illustrate the evolution of the session, while the alternate masters, jams and outtakes on disc 3 will certainly be of interest to casual fans and completists alike. All in all, few rock albums from this era have the staying power and poetic immediacy of LAYLA.

"Some Hearts" (11/15/2005) Rock & Pop Underwood, Carrie, Arista Records (USA)Carrie Underwood: Biff Watson, Bryan Sutton (acoustic guitar); Dann Huff, J.T. Corenflos, Tom Bukovac (electric guitar); Mike Johnson, Paul Franklin (steel guitar); Jonathan Yudkin (dobro, mandolin, fiddle); Adam Steffey (mandolin); Joel Derouin, Sid Page, Roberto Cani, Michael B. Markman, Josefina Vergara, Michele Richards, Susan Chatman, Alyssa J. Park, Mario De Leon, Endre Granat, Julian Hallmark, Tereza Stanislav, Denyse Buffum, Andrew Duckles, Matt Funes, Shanti Randall (violin); Jim VanCleve (fiddle); Suzie Katayama, Larry Corbett, Daniel Smith, Steve Richard (cello); Matt Rollings (piano); Steve Nathan, Charlie Judge (keyboards); Jimmie Lee Sloas (bass instrument); Chris McHugh, Lonnie Wilson (drums); Eric Darken (percussion); Hillary Lindsey, Wes Hightower, Perry Coleman, Morgane Hayes (background vocals). Country purists may take offense at finding American Idol winner Carrie Underwood's debut album in the country section. An unabashedly manufactured commercial product, SOME HEARTS is the sound of mainstream country in the 2000s heavily steeped in glossy pop. There's nothing downhome or roots-conscious about Underwood's voice or looks: she's the pretty blonde next door with a fine singing voice, but the powers that be have made her a country artist, and that's what the public gets. None of this is to say that SOME HEARTS is not a good pop album. The combination of Underwood's considerable gift and the slick, spot-on production of Dan Huff and Mark Bright makes for a fine package. Even on somewhat by-the-numbers tunes (like her smash hit "Inside Your Heaven"), Underwood sings with conviction, and she does well with both the ballads and the uptempo tracks. Idol viewers and fans of artists like Faith Hill and Shania Twain will want to check this out.

Illinoise [7/5] *
"Illinois" (10/01/2005) Rock & Pop Stevens, Sufjan, Asthmatic Kitty RecordsPersonnel: Sufjan Stevens (vocals, various instruments); Craig Montoro (vocals, trumpet); James McAlister (drums); Daniel Smith, Elin Smith (hand claps, background vocals); Matt Morgan, Shara Worden, Katrina Kerns (background vocals). The second entry from sui generis singer/songwriter Sufjan Stevens in his absurdly ambitious project to make a record for every state in America outdistances even 2003's superb GREETINGS FROM MICHIGAN in scope and beauty. A sweeping paean to the Lincoln state, ILLINOIS weaves together history, personal confession, and detail-filled scenarios with chamber folk, expansive orchestral pop, and back-porch pastoral settings for a stunningly progressive indie gem that sound like Brian Wilson, Stereolab, and Neil Young holding hands in heaven. Remarkably, in its intricate, gorgeously crafted surfaces, ILLINOIS lives up to its aims. In addition to its symphonic grandeur, the album also showcases Stevens's heartland folk, and some of the album's most shimmering moments are its most spare. "John Wayne Gacy, Jr.," for instance, is an absorbing narrative that features Stevens's sweet tenor couched by guitar, piano, and backing vocals. "Casimir Pulaski Day," similarly, rides a rootsy banjo and guitar groove while Stevens unfurls image-rich lyrics over a lilting melody. Witty, audacious, and moving, ILLINOIS manages to be spiritual, entertaining, and educational all at once, resulting in an utterly unique conceptual and musical statement.

Dick's Picks Volume Twenty-Two by Grateful Dead (CD - 08/31/2004)
"Dick's Picks Volume Twenty-Two" (08/31/2004) Rock & Pop Grateful Dead, Grateful Dead ProductionsDICK'S PICKS VOLUME TWENTY-TWO is the twenty-second in a series of archival live Dead CDs that were overseen by the late Dick Latvala. It differs from the band's "From The Vault" series in that the "Dick's Picks" releases do not feature entire concerts and are mastered from two- and four-track recordings, rather than eight- and sixteen-track recordings. Latvala was the official keeper of the Dead's tape archives; the Grateful Dead organization describes him as "one of the original Dead tapers". Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir (vocals, guitar); Ron "Pigpen" McKernan (vocals, harmonica, organ, percussion); Phil Lesh (vocals, bass); Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann (drums). Recorded live at Kings Beach Bowl, Lake Tahoe, California on February 23 & 24, 1968. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. These West Coast recordings from early 1968 capture the Grateful Dead in raw and rare form. Keyboardist Tom Constanten had not yet joined the group, so his adventurous playing and compositional influence were not yet a factor. Instead, singer Pigpen was still manning the organ. Consequently, the sound ranges closer to the bluesy, hard-edged garage-band sound found on the band's first album. This approach is typified by the crunch of the opener "Viola Lee Blues" and Pigpen's earthy delivery of the Elmore James blues classic "It Hurts Me Too." That said, these recordings don't lack for instrumental flights of fancy. Psychedelic jam vehicles such as "The Eleven" were already in the band's repertoire, and the venerated improv vehicle "Dark Star" makes its live debut here. Jerry Garcia's fleet-fingered guitar expositions shine brightly on these tunes, and bear just as much conviction as his more concise statements on the bluesier selections.
So Much More by Brett Dennen (CD - 11/21/2006)
Heavier Things by John Mayer (Rock) (CD - 09/09/2003)
"Heavier Things" (09/09/2003) Rock & Pop Mayer, John (Rock), Aware/Columbia RecordsThis is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: John Mayer (vocals, guitar); Michael Chaves (guitar); Greg Leisz (lap steel guitar); Dan Higgins (saxophone); Roy Hargrove (trumpet); Jamie Muhoberac (keyboards); J.J. Johnson, Matt Chamberlain, Steve Jordan (drums); Larry Castro (percussion). Recording information: Avatar Studios, New York, New York; Ocean Way, Hollywood, California (2003). With the experience of a Grammy-winning, major-label debut under his belt and the requisite pop stardom that goes with it, John Mayer continues forging a steadily impressive musical canon with his third full-length outing, HEAVIER THINGS. Like the introspective musings of fellow, mellow pop singer-songwriters such as Dave Matthews and Jack Johnson, Mayer's songs delve into the subtleties of relationships and their accompanying navel-gazing. "Bigger Than My Body" finds him not only on a search for self, but sounding like Matthews with his hint of falsetto, as "Something's Missing" does much the same on a bed of swirling guitar and the occasionally chiming chord. As for the fairer sex, there's the requisite pleading found within the confines of the bluesy "Come Back to Bed," and the realization of loving someone with emotional baggage in "Daughters," which stems from childhood issues. All is not entirely dour, however, as this former Berkley School of Music student includes a pair of more up-tempo cuts--"Clarity," the hip-hop-brushed opener featuring jazz great Roy Hargrove and Roots drummer ?uestlove Thompson, and the hook-filled pop nugget "Only Heart." Packed with such emotional heft, it's no wonder John Mayer went with the title HEAVIER THINGS.

"Gold" (08/24/2004) Rock & Pop Fucking AM (The), Drag CityThe Fucking AM: Tim Green (vocals, guitar, organ, Mellotron, electric keyboard, synthesizer, Moog synthesizer, bass instrument); Tim Soete (vocals, guitar, synthesizer); Phil Manley (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass instrument); Sebastian Thompson (vocals, drums); Nathan Means (synthesizer); Jon Theodore (drums). Recording information: Louder Studios, San Francisco, California; National Recording, Washington, D.C. A rewarding collaboration between members of the San Francisco metal band the Fucking Champs and the D.C. retro synth-rockers Trans Am, GOLD has the feel of a heavy rock goof-off that has taken on a life of its own. The twin-guitar attack of "Bad Leg" and "Doing Research for an Autobiography" not only references hot-button 1970s bands like Boston and Thin Lizzy, but also fuels a unique sound that's often surprisingly compelling. This imaginative and affectionate mayhem reaches its pinnacle on the mesmerizing "Electrico Gomez," the last piece of the "Gomez" trilogy that closes the set.
