"Radio Disney: Ultimate Jams, Vol. 1-6 [CD & DVD]" (04/06/2004) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Walt DisneyThis release includes a bonus DVD. The RADIO DISNEY series is a consistently reliable source of entertainment for tweens (kids from ages seven to 13), and this particular grab bag of energy-enhanced pop confectionery is no exception. This collection, featuring standouts from the past six installments, includes the youthful delights of the D Tent Boys, whose "Dig It" sounds like Outkast on helium, and Christian popsters Jump5, whose "Spinnin' Around" is three minutes of timeless teen bubble gum. ULTIMATE JAMS also features hits from as far back as the late 1970s and '80s, in the form of classics such as the Village People's "YMCA" and Technotronic's "Pump Up the Jam." Meanwhile, a new generation is introduced to James Brown's funky perennial "I Got You (I Feel Good)." There'll always be a young audience eager to test the waters of the pop mainstream, and the RADIO DISNEY series, with its fun selections, provides an ideal opportunity for kids to do just that.

"Another Year on the Streets, Vol. 3 [Bonus DVD]" (06/22/2004) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Vagrant Records (USA)This release includes a bonus DVD. The third volume of Vagrant's Another Year on the Streets label compilation series is all unreleased, and flush with additional DVD content. Kicking off with "Exhibit of the Year" from Down to Earth Approach -- a promising young band that sounds like a surgical union of the label's top-line acts -- Another Year moves through a collection of tracks culled from forthcoming releases and stuff unique to itself. Alkaline Trio is convincing and loud covering the Psychedelic Furs' "Heaven," but Autumn to Ashes' run through "Territorial Pissings" is marred by atrocious sound quality. "When It Isn't Like It Should Be" is a Saves the Day rarity from 1997, when they were still down with hyper-melodic hardcore, while Audio Learning Center continues to school the kids in the ways of indie rock past with the strong "New Calvary." Speaking of schooling, rock graybeards should cry tears of Grain Belt beer at the ragged sparkle of unlikely Vagrant signee Paul Westerberg's "As Far as I Know," which might as well be a relic from that vet's heyday. Overall, Another Year is a tidy survey of the label's roster and sound. It's cheap, too, and the bonus video content is tasty gravy. ~ Johnny Loftus

"Neurot Recordings [Bonus DVD]" (06/15/2004) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Neurot RecordingsThe bonus DVD disc features music videos and documentary clips. Includes five previously unreleased tracks. This budget-priced compilation offers a wealth of both audio and video content for the Neurot Recordings fan. After kicking off with "Burn," also the leadoff track for Neurosis' '04 effort Eye of Every Storm, the set goes on to feature material from the entire Neurot family. You know -- Oxbow, Grails, Tarantula Hawk -- all your charm school favorites. Highlights range from the soul-tearing pound of Zeni Geva's "Tyrranicide," through the extended noise jamming of Sabers, and on to Neurosis principal Steve VonTill, who contributes the brittle, near-folk dirge "Breathe" from his incredible 2002 solo effort If I Should Fall to the Field. Neurot Recordings is highly recommended, not only for aficionados of the label, but for anyone curious about the punishment and peacefulness riding high on the fringe. ~ Johnny Loftus

"Inside the Music: Women on Top" (10/09/2001) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Silverline RecordsA collection of ten tracks by female artists released in DVD Audio, Inside the Music: Women on Top is strangely reminiscent of the compilations released when the CD was still a developing format. Most of the track selections are solid enough, including Blondie's "Heart of Glass," Katrina and the Waves' "Walking on Sunshine," and Kim Carnes' "Bette Davis Eyes," but they're also somewhat dated; Wilson Phillips' "Hold On" is the most recent track included on the album. Likewise, it's questionable whether anyone really wants to try out their new DVD Audio system with Vixen's "Cryin'." Missing Persons' "Words," the Motels' "Only the Lonely," and Ike and Tina Turner's "Nutbush City Limits" round out this odd collection, which is entertaining enough, but hardly state-of-the-art. ~ Heather Phares

"The Reindeer Room, Vol. 2: A Christmas Chillout" (10/11/2005) Rock & Pop Various Artists, KriztalContains a bonus DVD with a video Yule log. Performers include: Desmond Williams, Fort Knoxx Five (AKA Thunderball), James Hardway, DJ Trax, Barrio Jazz Gang, Lazybatusu, Sub Santa. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Anne Marie Hurst (vocals). Recording information: Quasibeach View Studio, Miami Beach, FL. Illustrator: Jon Braeley. Arranger: Costas Chrysogelos. Perhaps the most telling thing about Reindeer Room, Vol. 2: A Christmas Chillout is that it comes with a bonus DVD disc featuring not only all 15 tracks remixed in 5.1 Surround Sound, but also a flickering Yule log for you viewing pleasure as you listen. In other words, like the Yule log, the music is meant as background to the holiday season, rather than a listening experience in itself. Many of the tracks are holiday favorites (although three -- "The Goose Is Getting Fat," "Hard Candy Christmas," and "She Won't Be Home" -- are unfamiliar), presented in sort of electronica lite versions. Billy Paul Williams features singer Nicole Henry on his three contributions, and at least on "Good King Wenceslas" he'd have been advised to erase her contribution, as she destroys a perfectly lovely carol with some appalling phrasing. For the most part, however, this is exactly what it claims to be -- background music, neither offensive nor outstanding. It simply is. And if that's what you like, it'll see you well through Christmas. ~ Chris Nickson

"Viva la Bands [CD+DVD]" (06/21/2005) Rock & Pop Various Artists, 456 EnterprisesDaredevil skateboarder, prankster, music video director, and all-around hilarious cad Bam Margera is best known for his wildly popular MTV program VIVA LA BAM, an offshoot of the pioneering crazy-guys-doing-crazy-things show JACKASS. VIVA LA BANDS collects Margera's favorite music and is perfect for skating, don't-try-this-at home stunts, or just general rocking out. In other words, most of this is high-energy music of the hard rock, metal, and punk varieties. Because this is a compilation of one guy's favorites rather than a collection of corporate bands vying for soundtrack positions, the artists range from big-time (Clutch, CKY) to lesser-known (Bendover, Viking Skull). Highlights include "Lost Boys" from Finland's 69 Eyes, which sounds like a goth-infused combination of Motley Crue and The Cult, and Turbronegro's "All My Friends Are Dead," pure trashy '77-style punk with shout-along vocals, surfy guitar riffs, and a distinctly European flair.

"Rock Against Bush, Vol. 1" (04/20/2004) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Fat Wreck ChordsIt should come as no surprise that the punk-rock community went to the mat in expressing their displeasure with the 2004 White House administration by releasing the CD/DVD combo ROCK AGAINST BUSH VOL. 1. More than just a 26-track rant against authority, this collection, compiled by Fat Wreck Chords owner/NOFX frontman Fat Mike, brings together a broad range of pop-punk acts whose choice of well-written songs are only superseded by Fat Mike's thoughtful liner notes. Here Mike points out that the purpose of ROCK AGAINST BUSH is not about "being punk rock and hating the government," but rather "being punk rock and changing the government." To that end, the roster of acts involved range from the lollipop punk of Sum 41 ("Moron") and impassioned emo of New Found Glory ("No News Is Good News") to the righteous rants of Jello Biafra and D.O.A. ("That's Progress"). Sprinkled throughout the compilation are previously unreleased and rare songs, including the Ataris' lo-fi reading of Bad Religion's "Heaven Is Falling," a new version of the Offspring's 1991 song "Baghdad" (originally written about the first Bush administration), and Billy Bragg's sprightly collaboration with Less Than Jake on their track "The Brightest Bulb Has Burned Out."

"Disney Channel Hits: Take 2" (04/26/2005) Rock & Pop Original Soundtrack, Walt DisneyThe second volume of Disney Channel Hits follows the format of its first, featuring soundtrack highlights from existing Disney TV shows and movies with a few videos as bonus content. Take 2 starts out with three tracks from 2004's Stuck in the Suburbs, including Jesse McCartney's "Good Life" (which is also included in remix form), "Whatever Life" from Hilary Duff hopeful Haylie Duff, and the pleasant teen pop of Annelies VanDerPol's "Over It." The "Cheetah Sisters" theme is reprised from the Cheetah Girls soundtrack, but that set's "Girl Power" and "Cinderella" appear here in slightly remixed dance-pop forms. Elsewhere, the light pop vehicles for Disney starlets Hayden Panettiere ("My Hero Is You") and Christy Carlson Romano ("Anyone but Me"; "Dive In") differ negligibly from Zetta Bytes and Huckapoo's Pixel Perfect material. The fan who already owns the music from these films probably doesn't need Disney Channel Hits: Take 2, unless its video content is appealing. But for those who don't have the separate soundtracks, this is a nice enough sampler. ~ Johnny Loftus

"Matador at Fifteen [Digipak]" (10/12/2004) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Matador (record label)New York City's Matador Records has long been a progressive force in indie rock. Started in 1989 by visionary Chris Lombardi, the label achieved the first signs of success in 1990, when it unleashed Teenage Fanclub's stunning debut, A CATHOLIC EDUCATION, onto the world. In its wake, Matador would begin to assemble a distinct and diverse roster of artists and release genre-stretching music, culminating here in MATADOR AT FIFTEEN, a collection of the label's finest from 1999-2004. If anything, the two-CD/one-DVD compilation displays the diversity for which Matador has come to be known. Disc 1's handpicked greatest hits features favorites from revered noise-rockers Guided By Voices ("My Kind of Soldier") and Mission of Burma ("Dirt"), alongside slabs of brooding post-punk from neo-hipsters Interpol ("Obstacle 1") and Pretty Girls Make Graves ("This Is Our Emergency"). Longtime fans will be glad to own Disc 2, with unreleased tracks and rarities from folk chanteuse Cat Power, as well as Mogwai, Yo La Tengo, Matmos, and many others. As a bonus, the DVD reveals rarely aired videos from Pavement, Cornelius, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and more.
