"Dick's Picks Volume Twenty-Two" (08/31/2004) Rock & Pop Grateful Dead, Grateful Dead ProductionsDICK'S PICKS VOLUME TWENTY-TWO is the twenty-second in a series of archival live Dead CDs that were overseen by the late Dick Latvala. It differs from the band's "From The Vault" series in that the "Dick's Picks" releases do not feature entire concerts and are mastered from two- and four-track recordings, rather than eight- and sixteen-track recordings. Latvala was the official keeper of the Dead's tape archives; the Grateful Dead organization describes him as "one of the original Dead tapers". Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir (vocals, guitar); Ron "Pigpen" McKernan (vocals, harmonica, organ, percussion); Phil Lesh (vocals, bass); Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann (drums). Recorded live at Kings Beach Bowl, Lake Tahoe, California on February 23 & 24, 1968. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. These West Coast recordings from early 1968 capture the Grateful Dead in raw and rare form. Keyboardist Tom Constanten had not yet joined the group, so his adventurous playing and compositional influence were not yet a factor. Instead, singer Pigpen was still manning the organ. Consequently, the sound ranges closer to the bluesy, hard-edged garage-band sound found on the band's first album. This approach is typified by the crunch of the opener "Viola Lee Blues" and Pigpen's earthy delivery of the Elmore James blues classic "It Hurts Me Too." That said, these recordings don't lack for instrumental flights of fancy. Psychedelic jam vehicles such as "The Eleven" were already in the band's repertoire, and the venerated improv vehicle "Dark Star" makes its live debut here. Jerry Garcia's fleet-fingered guitar expositions shine brightly on these tunes, and bear just as much conviction as his more concise statements on the bluesier selections.

Rock opera and punk are usually two mutually exclusive musical styles. Then again, Green Day has never followed any rock rulebook, so it's not entirely surprising that the trio crafted a punk-rock opera that takes the Bush administration and its policies to task. It doesn't get any more pointed than a couplet from the frenetic title cut that states, "I'm not a part of a redneck agenda/Now everybody do the propaganda!" Under the guidance of any other group of agitated punks, the results of such an undertaking could easily become didactic. But with creative spearhead Billie Joe Armstrong at the helm, AMERICAN IDIOT is melodically driven, with the kind of intellectual bent that allows for a pair of mini-operas, "Jesus of Suburbia" and "Homecoming." Trimmed with a light sprinkling of piano and a big guitar sound occasionally reminiscent of Mott the Hoople, the former skewers the hypocrisy that can pervade small-town life. The latter is equally effective, as clever time changes and sonic flourishes (glockenspiel, doo-wop harmonies, honking saxophone) serve as an intriguing counterpoint to the band's hook-laced riffs.

Howlin' Wolf's driving "No Place To Go," Sonny Boy Williamson's "My Baby's Sweet"--which features some terrific slide guitar playing--and a rousing version of Robert Johnson's "Dust My Broom" (re-titled "Dust My Blues" on this recording) are all played with grit, passion, and energy. LIVE AT THE MARQUEE also includes three of Green's compositions, "Watch Out for Me Woman," "Looking for Somebody," and the slow-burning "Evil Woman Blues," which showcases Green an Jeremy Spencer's astounding guitar abilities. While Green and Spencer would eventually part ways, recordings such as this one should help re-establish the belief among the band's fans that, in their earlier years, Fleetwood Mac's dual guitar sound was as powerful as any white blues band--including the Rolling Stones of that same era. While the recording quality is solid but unremarkable, the performances on LIVE AT THE MARQUEE are first-rate.
