Catalog CD Album Box [Box] [Limited] [3/15] *
"Catalog CD Album Box [Box] [Limited]" (03/15/2005) Rock & Pop Eagles (Rock) (The), Asylum (USA)The Eagles (Rock): Don Felder (vocals, guitar, slide guitar); Bernie Leadon (vocals, guitar, steel guitar, banjo, mandolin); Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Randy Meisner, Timothy B. Schmit (vocals, bass guitar); Don Henley (vocals, drums, percussion). Additional personnel: J. D. Souther (vocals, acoustic guitar); Jimmy Buffett (vocals); Jage Jackson (guitar, percussion); David Bromberg (fiddle); Phil Kenzie (saxophone); David Sanborn (alto saxophone); Joe Vitale (piano, organ, drums, percussion); Jim Ed Norman (piano); Vince Melamed (electric piano); Albhy Galuten (synthesizer). Recording information: Santa Monica, California; Los Angeles, California; Criteria Studio, Miami, Florida (1972 - 1980). Ensembles: The Royal Martian Orchestra; The Clapetts; The Monstertones. Housed in a simple, dark-gray box embossed with the band's name and a limited-edition number, this minimal-yet-handsome set contains all of the Eagles' albums between 1972's EAGLES and 1980's LIVE, remastered and encased in perfect miniature reproductions of the original LP sleeves. Although there are no outtakes, alternate mixes, or B-sides to spoil the unity of the albums, collectors should note the inclusion of a ninth bonus disc, containing both tracks of the band's rare 1978 Christmas single. Taken as a whole, the box charts the Eagles' evolution, from the most accessible of the original country-rock groups (EAGLES, the classic concept album DESPERADO) to the kings of Los Angeles soft rock (ONE OF THESE NIGHTS, ON THE BORDER) to their late '70s pinnacle as one of the biggest bands in the world (their masterpiece, HOTEL CALIFORNIA, and THE LONG RUN). By presenting the albums as a whole, this easily supercedes the Eagles' previous compilations, which focused on the hit singles at the expense of equally impressive album tracks.
The Suicide Girls: Black Heart Retrospective by Various Artists (CD - 09/27/2005)
"The Suicide Girls: Black Heart Retrospective" (09/27/2005) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Epitaph Records (USA)Recording information: 1981 - 2005. Compiled by Skinny Puppy's Dave Ogilvie under the banner of the Suicide Girls' goth/punk pin-up site, BLACK HEART RETROSPECTIVE features his band's chaotic, sample-heavy "VX Gas Attack," along with other vintage goth tunes. Aside from the rather inexplicable inclusion of a hip-hop track by Atmosphere, the set consists of potent, gloomy rock, with some selections geared towards the dance floor (Ministry's classic "Every Day Is Halloween," Killing Joke's surging "Love Like Blood," Nitzer Ebb's hyper-aggressive "Murderous") and others best suited for bedroom brooding (the Cure's "One Hundred Years," Bauhaus's "She's in Parties"). Those seeking a bit of post-1980s goth rock will find it in the form of Alkaline Trio's spot-on cover of Sisters of Mercy's "Lucretia My Reflection" and Nine Inch Nails' industrial-strength dose of darkness, "The Wretched."
American Roulette by Danny O'Keefe (CD - 04/11/2006)
"American Roulette" (04/11/2006) Rock & Pop O'Keefe, Danny, Wounded Bird RecordsThough singer-songwriter Danny O'Keefe has had his songs covered by artists from Elvis Presley to Jackson Browne, his talents have never achieved widespread recognition. Dating from 1977, this smartly assembled, country-flavored collection shows just what the public has been missing over the past few decades. In a series of sharply observed, sophisticated vignettes, O'Keefe lays bare subjects from teen runaways to the opaqueness of relationships in songs like "On Discovering a Missing Person" and "You Look Just Like a Girl Again."

American Idiot [PA] by Green Day (CD - 09/21/2004)
"American Idiot [PA]" (09/21/2004) Rock & Pop Green Day, RepriseThis is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Green Day: Billie Joe Armstrong (vocals, guitar); Mike Dirnt (vocals, bass instrument); Tre Cool (drums). Recording information: Ocean Way Recording, Hollywood, California. Rock opera and punk are usually two mutually exclusive musical styles. Then again, Green Day has never followed any rock rulebook, so it's not entirely surprising that the trio crafted a punk-rock opera that takes the Bush administration and its policies to task. It doesn't get any more pointed than a couplet from the frenetic title cut that states, "I'm not a part of a redneck agenda/Now everybody do the propaganda!" Under the guidance of any other group of agitated punks, the results of such an undertaking could easily become didactic. But with creative spearhead Billie Joe Armstrong at the helm, AMERICAN IDIOT is melodically driven, with the kind of intellectual bent that allows for a pair of mini-operas, "Jesus of Suburbia" and "Homecoming." Trimmed with a light sprinkling of piano and a big guitar sound occasionally reminiscent of Mott the Hoople, the former skewers the hypocrisy that can pervade small-town life. The latter is equally effective, as clever time changes and sonic flourishes (glockenspiel, doo-wop harmonies, honking saxophone) serve as an intriguing counterpoint to the band's hook-laced riffs.
Our highest rated review:
Green Day rocks! I loved this album more than any of their others. Politics come in strong and the tunes are guaranteed to get stuck in your head. The vocals are wonderful, and the lyrics are very emotional. It's very inspirational. Oh, and to the person
Our lowest rated review:
If there is an anthem for the liberal stance in this nation, American Idiot is it. The song describes everything that the liberal media does and then points fingers at the conservatives. The paranoia and hysteria in this nation is caused by newscasters

IV by The Fucking Champs (CD - 09/19/2000)
"IV" (09/19/2000) Rock & Pop Fucking Champs (The), Drag CityThe Fucking Chanps: Tim Soete (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, Mellotron, synthesizer, drums); Josh Smith, Tim Green (guitar, synthesizer). Recorded at Louder Studios, San Francisco, California. The San Francisco prog rock trio the Fucking Champs twist 1970s rock and '80s heavy metal to their own ends on this high-powered, twin lead guitar-fueled set. That the band doesn't take itself too seriously is made obvious in the titles to these mostly instrumental pieces, such as "I Love the Spirit World and I Love Your Father" and "Thor Is Like Immortal," but its musical expertise is evident throughout such full-on, chunky metal tributes as "NWOBHM-2" and "Espirit De Corpse."

What It Is to Burn by Finch (Emo) (CD - 03/12/2002)
"What It Is to Burn" (03/12/2002) Rock & Pop Finch (Emo), Drive-Thru RecordsFinch includes: Nate Barcalow (vocals); Randy Strohmeyer, Alex Linares (guitar); Derek Doherty (bass); Alex Pappas (drums); Mark Trombino (programming). Additional personnel: Daryl Palumbo (vocals). Recorded at Big Fish Studios, Encinitas, California. A surprising amalgam of punk and metal, with a dash of emo, Finch's full-length debut is a powerful statement of first principles from this Temecula, CA quintet. Kicking off with the storming, anthemic "New Beginnings," they rush headlong through a set that positively bursts with uncorked energy, from the chiming, mid-tempo "Post Script" to the punky "Stay With Me." Green Day fans will find themselves on familiar territory here, but there's more to Finch than mere punk rock duplication. Nate Barcalow's passionate vocals have a palpable ring of conviction that's echoed in the band's ensemble performance, and the intensity never lets up. "Project Mayhem" is a particular high point, displaying the band's musical smarts with some almost Beefheartian twists and turns, and if you find this prospect disconcerting, there's always the perfect pop rush of "Three Simple Words" to bring you back to earth. WHAT IT IS TO BURN is pure youthful passion.
I really love this album. It's hard to pick a favorite track, but if I have to I'll go with "Perfection Through Silence" and "Project Mayhem". Everyone already knows that "What It Is To Burn" is good. I don't have to recommend this to the Finch fans becau

Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse by Skinny Puppy (CD - 01/01/2006)
"Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse" (01/01/2006) Rock & Pop Skinny Puppy, Nettwerk AmericaAdditional personnel: D. Rudolph Goettel (keyboards); Tom Ellard (drums); Dave Jackson (chainsaw); Wilhelm Schroder (background vocals). Producers: Cevin Key, Dave Oglivie, Adrian Sherwood, Justin Strauss, Murry Elias. Engineers: Cevin Key, Dave Oglivie, Adrian Sherwood. Quite possibly the best album title in all of industrial-disco--although Revolting Cocks' YOU GODDAMNED SON OF A BITCH has a certain earthy charm--1986's MIND: THE PERPETUAL INTERCOURSE is one of Skinny Puppy's most fascinating albums. This is clearly a transitional release that moves the duo of cEVIN Key and Nivek Ogre from the heavily Cabaret Voltaire-influenced sound of 1984's REMISSION and 1985's BITES into the near-symphonic shaping of found sound, film samples, and electronic beats. This sound would later spawn gems like CLEANSE FOLD AND MANIPULATE and VIVISECTVI. Three of this album's 13 tracks feature the sampling and electronic contributions of Dwayne Goettel whose hyperactive, Attention Deficit Disorder-style editing tricks give the songs a powerful and demented energy that the rest of the album lacks.
