The internal 32-bit processor makes accessing the receiver's features fast and also speeds up the rendering of the on-screen seven-line display and program guide. The program guide tells you what you're watching and what's coming up on other channels. You can also set it to display Caller ID information (if you subscribe to the service from your local phone company), so you can choose not to answer the call from your mother-in-law if you're watching a good flick. What's more, there's a search feature, called "Scout," that will let you look for favorite shows using up to eight key words, such as "wrestling, "Jell-O" and "bikini." If you've got kids in the house, you'll be glad to know that you can lock out channels to keep their young eyes from objectionable programming. If your VCR lacks DBS control, the receiver can be programmed to turn on and tune in to eight different events. The internal software can be upgraded via satellite, so you can rest easy knowing that you won't have to put this unit out to pasture before its time. RCA's DTC-100 is the least expensive DTV/HDTV decoder box currently available, along with the identical ProScan PSHD105. Unlike some other DTV decoders, it's capable of receiving DirecTV broadcasts when connected to a DirecTV satellite dish. It will also receive high-definition DirecTV satellite broadcasts, although you'll need a special larger HD dish (model DSA 8900, $149.99 list).The DTC-100 uses a VGA output to deliver its high definition signals. If your display only has HD (or "wideband") component video inputs, you won't be able to use the DTC-100. Try something like the Panasonic TUDST51. However, if your display is blessed with a VGA or an RGB input (RGB users will need an inexpensive VGA to RGB adapter), this box will pass high-definition signals to your set. It should also work with many computer monitors.All 18 ATSC HD formats received by the DTC-100 can be output as 480i (regular TV), 540p (progressive scan), or 1080i HDTV. In addition, the built-in line doubler will upconvert regular TV (cable, satellite, broadcast) to 540p.
